Pretty sure they've already
Why?
Why do you BAM fans continue to fight for a storyline that will never happened? ABC has done all it can to neuter the character of Bianca from rape to hooking her up with a dude in drag just to prevent a real lesbian relationship on All My Children.
For years the BAM fan base told TPTB at All My Children and ABC Daytime that a straight girl Maggie could fall in love with a gay girl Bianca because love can magically change a person's sexuality.
Now that clinche is being used to hook Bianca up with a man. The BAM fan base gave TPTB the perfect excuse to do it. Bianca can see into a transgendered man's soul and fall in love, no matter that the character has not transitioned.
It's been 5 years already and one of the actresses is no longer on the show! How much longer can a group of people be used and abused? It's not healthy at this point. You can't expect the gay community to advocate for a fictionalized couple when our real life relationships are under attack.
Isn't their more important ways to be spending your time than to fight for a soap opera couple that was never real to begin with? I can mention about 5 different things that are more important to write TPTB about than BAM just off the top of my head such as global warming, the Iraq War, restoring our Constitutional Rights, combating religious fundamentalism in America and the outsourcing of American jobs.
But I know all those things are irrelvant because Maggie and Bianca are cute together. *giggles* Knock your socks off and continue to advocate for a soap opera couple because the BAM fan base will never have to worry about the ill effects of reality.
The T in LGBTQ
If I'm not mistaken, Bianca is not hooking up with a man. She is hooking up with a transsexual, which is completely different. The transsexual is a woman, MTF, therefore Bianca is still a lesbian. I am with a transsexual, does that mean we are a straight couple? Alex, my partner, is a woman, her body just hasn't caught up yet.
AMC is dealing with a controversial and groundbreaking storyline by including a transsexual character, which is quite amazing.
If the Maggie character is straight, she is not likely to suddenly become gay. We all know that THAT is ridiculous. I agree that there should be more LGBTQ representation on television, soaps included. But remember what the 'T' in LGBTQ means. There are sexual minorities out there besides lesbians.
Erk...sorry, I didn't catch
Erk...sorry, I didn't catch the full gist of your post on the first go through and jumped the gun on my T rant.
Sorry about that!
wow
In some ways, I don't disagree with what you had to say bluebuddha, but on the other hand it was a little harsh... you have to know that a lot of these fans that have stayed with BAM since the beginning - they've met Eden and Liz. They've become personally invested in not only the BAM storyline, but in the careers of both actresses. They've raised tens of thousands of dollars for charity organizations like RAINN, and have spent enormous amounts of time and money in order to see and support this cause. So, no they're not going to just give up that easily. They believe in the relationship between Bianca and Maggie, but more importantly they believe in Eden and Liz. Your accusation that they could be spending their own free time doing other things is, really for one, not your concern. Sorry, but it's not. And two, the assumption that it's not doing anything for the greater good is ludicrous, because as I've said, BAM has raised an enormous amount of money for charitable organizations.
There's one thing though, that I believe the BAM fans consider most important above all else, and that is the impact that a relationship between Bianca and Maggie can have on a large amount of people. It's not necessarily about seeing BAM hook up (though no one would complain in the least). It's about bringing a homosexual relationship to life on screen - about doing it on daytime television when most of middle america is watching. It's about putting a face to gay and lesbian people, not just in practice but in a relationship situation. And how that can be the most powerful of all advocacies. They have an interminable spirit and some say it's crazy. Hell, I say it's crazy sometimes! But they have love and they have hope. And that's all they need to keep themselves going.
Being heard...
Being heard and asking for adequate visibility is never going to be un-important. Yes AMC has "neutered" Bianca from day one but there is great significance in the collective voice. Instead of admonishing those who choose to fight for it, perhaps we should thank them for taking up a torch some of us are too deflated to carry anymore. If you think the people active enough to email television executives don't carry the torch in other areas of their life I think you are sadly mistaken and should probably have a conversation with some of them. They are passionate about being heard period, whether on a global scale or a community/seed based level.
Thank you BAMmers for fighting where I personally gave up years ago because it frustrated and hurt too much to care.
I apologize but I'm bitter
I apologize I didn't mean to sound harsh. But I'm just really ticked off at how All My Children (AMC) and ABC Daytime have used and abused the gay characters and fans of the show. I feel bad for the BAM fan base because they have put in years of effort that hasn't amounted to much for Maggie and Bianca except for a few scenes of them happily leaving together and than breaking up. Their "real" relationship was not seen on camera and the rest of the time (years in fact) they spent circling each other. It's a shame. On one hand I realize the BAM fan base has been used and abused, but on the other hand they have enabled AMC/ABC Daytime the perfect cover for their homophobia and fear of putting Bianca in a real relationship with another woman.
The BAM fan base advocated to the show and network that love can transcend sexuality. This enabled the writers to put off giving Bianca a real love interest. Instead they had Maggie circle Bianca for years as she dated men, while Bianca remained celibate. TPTB had an easy out because they were essentially doing what gay fans of the show wanted, the possibility that Maggie become gay. It worked out only briefly as they had Maggie run off to Paris with Bianca.
However, the consequences of advocating for turning a straight girl gay was never considered by the BAM fan base. But years later we are seeing the end result , with TPTB hooking Bianca up with a male character , (albeit a transgendered one) because she can fall in love with his soul, just like Maggie fell in love with Bianca’s soul. TBTB are actually using the same lingo of the BAM fan base to rationalize a lesbian falling in love with a man! Bianca fans, which I consider myself one, have seen their favorite character of 6 years ruined in a matter of months.
So yes I realize I sound harsh, but I’m a bitter Bianca fan. I’ve been used for ratings by TPTB at AMC/ABC Daytime for many years and been abused by a fan base who dismissed the warnings and at times callously belittled anyone who disagreed with them. As a Bianca fan I’m the one left with the consequences of their actions because many of them have stopped watching now that Maggie is gone.
Maybe with Liz Hendrickson (Maggie) gone and Jeff Carlson (Zarf/Zoe) leaving in a few weeks TPTB will allow the character of Bianca to have a real relationship on the show. If Eden Riegel (Bianca) stays on the show there is a strong possibility they will continue to have Bianca in a relationship with Maggie in absentia. So please BAM fans just stop already you have done more harm than good. Allow the character of Bianca to move on and allow us Bianca fans some hope that she could have a real relationship on camera.
A man???
I understand your problem, bluebuddha, with the whole "falling in love with a soul" thing. All this "love is blind" stuff. And of course the obligatory, "love doesn't need labels." It seems that heterosexuals don't have to make P.C. or New Age excuses for being attracted to someone, but for queers there must always be this statement of spiritual intent that desexualizes us completely so that we are now fit for public (even secular!) consumption. But heck, I've known lesbians who, themselves, say, "I don't need your labels," as if validating the idea that the L word starts with another kind of scarlet letter.
However, I don't relate to your outrage over how TPTB have supposedly used the Bianca/Zoe relationship to "neuter" the lesbian POV and skirt the issue of a fully-blossomed lesbian character. (I'm finding it a bit ironic that people are using the term neutered in this situation, but whatever.) I mean, I don't understand how any queer can complain about having a smart gay-identified transsexual character on a soap opera during the broad daylight on network TV. The fact that they've done this and worked with GLAAD to bring issues to the forefront with appropriate LGBT insight is truly groundbreaking. I can't count the number of times some bigoted old-school character has been put in his or her place by Zoe and Bianca's friends and supporters on this show. The show has become, like, a queer soapbox, and I find it incredible. (Though in general, the show quality itself sucks donkeyballs. Heh.)
So...let's see... You think the fact that Zoe was born a man belittles Bianca's gayness, but wait. How do you suppose transsexual people feel about it? About Zoe. About Zoe/Bianca.
Do you suppose they feel the gayness is now gone from the show? That Bianca is now in love with a man thanks to homophobic TPTB? That a lesbian could never possibly fall for a pre-op MTF because of her male body or deep voice? No, they feel like it's a freaking dream come true to see a tranny on TV, I'm sure, given their almost COMPLETE lack of representation in the media OR real life. Your berating Zoe as a man--numerous times--and suggesting that her and Bianca's feelings could not be "real" undermines the totally free, out and obvious (and historic) queerness of this AMC storyline, and it is also transphobic, I hate to say. There are gay transsexuals just as there are straight ones, but there are none who would want to be called by their birth sex. Just as an aside, there are also tons of women who live 30-40 years of their lives as straight until they realize (or admit) they are attracted to/in love with another woman, and I doubt they'd want that love judged against someone else's standards. Ann Heche notwithstanding.
I don't feel like the show has degraded the gay storyline at all--I feel like they've upgraded queer awareness everywhere. First with the character of Bianca, a truly great person, and now Zoe, a very deep, emotional, personable, and morally upstanding person portrayed by an absolutely SUPERB actor. If you knew anything about transsexuals, you would know that most of them feel they have the "soul" of the opposite sex. Many of them also not only pass as the opposite sex, but also radiate their true gender from within. Therefore, for a heterosexual man or homosexual woman to fall in love with a MTF woman is not that strange, but it is strange to see it happening (surrounded by good vibes and good intentions) on TV.
Sadly, your saying that the Zoe storyline has "neutered" (or spayed) Bianca, in effect, is neutering/spaying the terribly rare concept of trans equality AMC is trying to promote. I realize that your concerns here are for the integrity of a lesbian portrayal, but relegating the trans storyline to nothing more than a 'phobic Bianca-foil diminishes both her integrity as an open-minded lesbian and Zoe's as a very special tranny lesbian.

WHERE CAN I???
DOES ANYONEKNOW WHERE I CAN DOWNLOAD CLIPS OF BIANCA AND MAGGIE?
I WANTED MAKE A FEW MUSIC VIDEOS WITH THEM, BUT I CAN'T SEEM TO FIND ANY PLACE TO GET THE CLIPS!!! PLEASE HELP!!
Bring Back BAM!
Storyline
While I thought in concept the transgender s/l was a great idea,in execution it was badly written, badly researched and rushed.Zoe/Zarf's s/l should have been about her transition instead they used it as a publicity stunt to get viewers and rushed the issue, not to mention they made Zoe really annoying.
Bianca was neutured with this s/l,I have no problem with lesbians and lesbian transexuals having relationships (one of my friends is trans and has a gay girlfriend),but I do have a problem with it when we where expected to believe Bianca was attracted to Zoe when Zoe was still living as Zarf. They broke up a ground breaking campaigned couple like BAM so they could have Eden kissing a male actor instead of a female one-ABC are full of homophobes. It wasn't right, especially when AMC have copped out so many times in showing Bianca/Eden in a relationship with a biological woman/actress.Why couldn't Zoe have fallen in love with another woman on the show or even a man?-the fact they put her with Bianca says everything about what they were really doing.
Maggie wasn't straight and didn't fall in love with Bianca's soul-she fell in love with a woman (she cheated on Bianca with a woman-which proves she is either gay or bi). There were many indications and scenes that showed Maggie was sexually confused and the only reason she didn't come out sooner was because they wouldn't allow a lesbian relationship on screen that lasted more than 5 mins.I hope the rumours are true and Bianca will come back permantly only this time allow her a lesbian romance (bringing back BAM would be great).BAM were soaps first gay super couple, but they weren't given the chance to have the same amount of screen time as straight couples,AMC dropped the ball and could have had some great soap drama with them.
Zoe was short changed and used with the s/l she,the issues and transgender ppl deserved better-I think ATWT would have done it better-it's time transgender ppl had a decent and well written s/l on a soap than the half-assed attempt by AMC.
OOOOOoooooo I can't resist a BAM thread!
As long as the same daytime president who threw a wrench into the Bianca and Maggie relationship to begin with by ordering a change in storyline that resulted in the Maggie "I'm into guys" talk with Bianca is still around...and he is as of today...Bianca on AMC is screwed...and it is best we don't see the character any more then at the holidays with daughter Miranda in tow.
Because last time Bianca was on for more then 2 days...as you mentioned...somehow that same daytime president got GLAAD to okay screwing over the lesbian character (I knew Bianca was done for when she lit up while kissing Zarf pre-Zoe confession and the final nail in her coffin was her begging Zoe for sex and saying she didn't care about little Zarf still being around) for a supposed great transgender storyline that ended up being more about propping Babe and her misdeeds more then anything else.
And you are right...they are doing a great job with Luke on ATWT...and that is because their writer used to work under Agnes Nixon who created AMC and specifically Bianca's lesbian storyline as well as used to be a head writer for AMC. So the ATWT head writer is finally getting to do the gay storyline that was always meant to happen on AMC with Bianca...until Brian Frons was hired as ABC daytime president and pulled the plug on Agnes's vision for Bianca.
Bianca and Miranda are back
Hopefully now any chance of
I loved the Zoe story
I loved the Zoe story line-- except for the Bianca part. There's no way I would ever fall for a transexual--- no offense to anyone. I don't even think I would for a post op one.
I would love to see BAM back--they belong together.
