300 ****spoilers****

Has anybody seen this? They made Xerxes seems like an evil sodomite. He was portrayed as a v. sort of "flaming" gay man, or however you'd like to put it, and at one point, he even stood behind Leonidas when he was threatening him and said something to the effect of "It is not death your men should fear." It was totally clear that he was talking about raping them. Every person associated with the Persians was somehow physically disabled--I've that they're pretty PO'd about that.

And I'm thinking anal sex thing is pretty ironic here cause like the Greeks didn't get down with homosexual activity, and with young boys, too.

I did think it was awesome when the queen killed that jerk who raped her. That was great! She was an awesome character. And hot.

What'd you think?

I really liked this movie. I

I really liked this movie. I loved the filters and how it was shot, and of course, the battle scenes. But definitely one that needs to be seen on the big screen.

I picked up on the "homos = bad; heteros = good" theme too. Ah well, it's just Hollywood doing its thing I guess.

Lena had some really good one-liners, and it was nice to see that her role wasn't just subservient. I laughed when she stabbed the guy. It was THAT satisfying!

ME TOO!

Yeah, stabbing--awesome! It wasn't just the stabbing, it was the filming, too. They did a really job of it. I hope I didn't give the impression that I didn't like the movie (which I probably did, don't have time to read over post), but I was super annoyed by that gay=evil thing.

Don't mock me, but my friends and I rented out a VIP room to see it. It's $100, plus the cost of a regular ticket and you can bring food, but have to buy their drinks. It held 20 and we packed it. So, I got to watch in a sound-proof balcony in a leather recliner. It kicked ass. I would totally go see it again in the theater.

I guess (I shouldn't say I guess b/c this happens to me all the time.) I'm just too sensitive b/c after I see stuff like that I just feel sad b/c it hits me on a personal level and not just a political one.

To be honest...

I wasn't all that impressed by this movie. Sure, it looked amazing but I just didn't find myself getting emotionally invested in the characters. Far too many battle scenes where I really didn't care who lived or died. Because I didn't know any of them well enough to bother shedding a tear when they got their heads cut off or whatever.

It was boring. Blood and guts. Shouting. More blood and guts. Normally I like that kind of thing, and I definitely should like any movie with Lena Heady in it but this just didn't do it for me.

Gladiator is a much better example of how these movies SHOULD be done...

Jodi, you definitely weren't

Jodi, you definitely weren't the only one to notice the portrayal of Xerxes - they wrote about it at AfterElton.com, here:

http://afterelton.logo-blogs.com/2007/03/11/300s-director-admits-using-homosexuality-to-scare-20-year-old-men/

Apparently the director said in Entertainment Weekly that he deliberately played up a 'gay' side to Xerxes to make him seem more creepy and threatening to a straight male audience.
