Suspended from XBox Live for being a lesbian!
I am so infuriated right now I had to vent somewhere. My girlfriend and I share an Xbox Live account. Today I received an email stating our account was suspended for inappropriate content in our profile. Our gamer tag is ShayHolly - not offense. In our profile under bio it says "lesbians from way back" - apparently offensive? My blood started boiling instantly. I was on the phone with Xbox customer support for hours and got absolutely no where. It is only suspended until tomorrow, but I don't care if they suspended it for only an hour, it is ridiculous. I started researching online and apparently I am not the only one this has happened to. Supposedly Xbox doesn't allow anyone to put their sexual orientation on their profile. I am proud of who I am and am not afraid to tell anyone. But at the same time, I don't feel as if I was even flaunting it. It was not in our gamer tag, it was in our bio and unless I am mistaken that is part of my bio! I don't get it... I'm so frustrated and angry I am thinking about getting rid of everything Xbox. I mean after all the money we have put into this system (I won't even get into the hardware failure frustrations) and this is how we are treated!

I've heard about this too...
Unfortunately, I think it's a policy that they've adopted to try and stop homosexual terms from being used in an offensive way (gay-baiting and bashing and little idiots calling people 'fags' and so forth)...but it just winds up infuriating actual gay people who feel like they now can't express themselves.
I think it's good intentions gone awry...
I honestly think that the
That is F*#@ up!!!
Uncool
Hypocrites?
I think that MS is being hypocritical in this situation.
there is a grand theft auto game "the ballad of gay tony".....
gay tony? and do all gays have ballads?
I havn't played it personally (lost interest in the GTA series many years ago), but i believe the character gay tony is sterotypical and IS gay.
well, as long as your product is making MS money and sells copies, GAY is ok i guess.
I'm all for stopping slander on xbox live (i've heard my share while playing online) - there is a line where it becomes a bit too much and a touch too intrusive.
either way, game on lesbians, game on :D
Gay Tony

"Correcto." In fact, Tony is a guy who I would be interested to know... xD Tony (and this game) is f*%$ing awesome.
You're wrong...
You're not suspended for being lesbian, you were suspended cause you put in your profile your sexual orientation. Think about it:
Is someone who dont know you need/must/have to know about your sexual orientation? Xbox Live is a Social Network, but not a Date Network. Dont confuse both things and be free to say to your friends (in YOUR friend list) about sex, drugs or anything else. Just try to not put any of this in your profile and you wont be banned.
I disagree.
As pointed out, there are many gamers with gamer tags referring to their heterosexuality. I didn't even have it in my gamer tag, it was in my bio and yet I was suspended. Since Xbox is not being consistent and fair with their "rules" they are in fact discriminating against me for my sexual orientation.
I understand it is not a dating network and I am not there to meet anyone for any other reason to than to play a game. I was simply filling in a section of my profile made by Xbox. They allow you to add information to your bio and I did. I don't see anything wrong with it.
Well you gotta consider...
This idea treads pretty
This idea treads pretty dangerously. For one, I can't even fathom why anybody would have a problem with sexual orientation in the first place. Should a parent feel that this isn't something their child should know, for whatever personal reason, then they should be using the slew of parental control tools at their disposal and Microsoft shouldn't need to police this with an eye against minority groups.
Removing the ability for a gamer to express themselves does not create a diverse community, which was the original goal for Xbox Live. I was recently banned for being a furry, with nothing but 'resident furry' listed under my bio. I have thus chosen to spend my time and money elsewhere. I don't seek damages, I don't even personally care if Microsoft addresses this type of discrimination in the future. For me, the relationship with Xbox is over.
One of the things I like to say quite a lot about these issues...if somebody doesn't like something, they aren't being forced to contribute. If people don't like the music I listen to on the radio, the books I read in the library, or the tv shows I watch on the air, then they should choose not to involve themselves. Usually we see the opposite, with campaigns to rid such influences from our society. In this case, even though I want to be mad at Microsoft and I want to be a force that changes things for the better and punishes the interloper...it wouldn't be right. In this case, I'll just vote with my wallet and walk away. After all, how can I expect people to let me do what I like without interference if I'm not willing to follow the same concept?
Not descrimitory.

As a test, a few friends of mine started gamer tags with similar concepts. The URL of their findings (complete with an awesome youtube video of the 'documentary') escapes me. If I find it I'll link it here.
Short story, they have yet to be banned in the 18 months since they began this charade. This of course doesn't show any true empirical evidence for or against active discrimination and could only suggest that there is no automated system that tracks this and they rely heavily on complaints and reports from fellow gamers.
With XBOX it may be systematic
Look at this one: http://www.wired.com/gamelife/2009/02/xbox-live-bans/ exact same story! I guess they haven't changed a thing and continue to ban people based on sexuality. They are so waiting for a class action law siut!
