Openly Lesbian Houston Mayoral Candidate, Annise Parker, leads race and makes run-off

Openly Lesbian Houston Mayoral Candidate, Annise Parker, leads the race with 28% in a four person race. She will face a run-off in 5 weeks. She's a former city council member and city controller. In her "victory" speech, she appeared next to her partner and daugther and at the end of the speech, put her arm around both. Shows Houston is much more inclusive than many might think. Makes me proud to be a Houstonian!

 

Also proves not everyone in Texas think like Bush.

I'm also very proud of my city.  I gave all my support to Annise Parker.  She has worked long and hard for Houston.  She will be a great Mayor...now on to the run off.

Oh wow thats great, I live like an hour outside of Houston. This is good for Texas especially since people here can be so conservative.

Her Sexual Orientation

The great thing about this race is that her sexual orientation has been a NON-ISSUE.  Never once has it been discussed.  She has been out for so long here and been a leader in Houston's government for so long that her sexual orientation is just not a big deal.  What makes this race great, is that her candidacy is far beyond her personal sexual orientation and her position with respect to GLBT issues so solidified that it hasn't been worth discussing.  The issues have all centered around things like zoning and fiscal responsibility and flooding.  Watching this race unfold makes me proud to be a Houstonian.  Honestly I can say both Gene Locke and Annise Parker will make GREAT Mayors.  Houston is really in a win-win situation, but I of course, will continue to campaign for Annise.
