Gay Bar Raid in Atlanta Last Thursday
So.. what's wrong with the Atlanta police department? Last week, the Atlanta Eagle (a gay men's bear bar) was raided. This past Sunday was a protest against it that I attended. Here is what I learned from the victims of the raid at the protest. Three paddy wagons showed up at the Eagle, ready to arrest everybody before any sort of investigation or probable cause. They made everyone (about sixty two people) lay face down on the floor for over an hour and used anti gay slurs against them. They physically assaulted a few of them, kicking one man in the ribs. They searched them for drugs and found NONE and then said, "well, I guess we are going to have to look at everyone's i.d.'s" and then they ran everyone's id through the system to see if anyone had anything on record worthy of arrest. They continuously said things like, "I hate fags" and threatened them. One of them even said, "this is fun, we should do this every week." They accused the bar owner for providing adult entertainment without a license, but the dancers were in their underwear, which isn't illegal. Anyway, on Sunday there was a pretty large protest, and now the chief of police has made an official apology to the gay and lesbian community.

Anyway, I just want everyone to know that you can never under estimate the power of protest! I feel proud that the Atlanta community came together on Sunday to let the world know that they will not just allow themselves to be pushed around! I think the officers involved will think twice before they treat gays like garbage. Has anything like this happened in your town? Any thoughts on this issue?
