A Biblical Affirmation of Homosexuality

I found this while stumbling. Forgive me if it is a repost. The link below is a letter written from a Christian minister named Bruce Lowe. He graduated from the University of Arkadelphia, Arkansas in 1936. He is now a staunch defender of LGBT rights and has delineated a biblical justification for homosexual acceptance. He encourages equality before the law as well as equality within the church.

Here is the introduction to his letter. Every LGBTQQ Christian should take the time to read his words. I think it will make a lot of you feel a little bit better. (The specific biblical argument can be found in Appendix B of the letter)

"I have been asked if Louise is real. Yes, and this was a real letter to her. Shortly after I had gone to my first pastorate out of the seminary, Louise invited my wife, Anna Marie, and me to have Sunday dinner with her family. That was over 50 years ago, and she has been one of our dearest friends ever since.

The last time we visited her she told me what I have related in the first sentence of this Letter. At that time I really knew nothing about homosexuality. I did have some suppositions-- quite negative--and had never thought I needed to study it. But her words made me want to know as much as I could learn about it.

When I began reading I soon realized things about myself I now deplore: I was ignorant of the many facts about homosexuality and what the Bible says about it. Without facts I had pre-judged it; I was prejudiced. With little thought I had read into the Bible what I presumed it ought to say instead of reading out of it what it does say. My idea of not needing to study the subject was pure anti-intellectualism. I am now grateful to God that He led me to study.

I read some two score books, most by eminent sociologists, psychologists and theologians. Then I wrote this letter to Louise, reflecting what I now have come to believe is the truth about homosexuality, what the Bible says and what God wants us to think and do about it.

Now I want others to study seriously this matter of such importance to many lives and many churches and denominations. I asked for and received Louise's permission to share the Letter with others. I pray it may be helpful.

Interesting

That letter is quite a long read, but certainly worthwhile. Thank you for posting it, Maggie. And thanks for sharing the other link as well, Rev.

Lost in translation

It is interesting how people get so amped up over ancient text that has been translated, and translated, and translated ad nauseam that something is bound to be misunderstood. I also find it amusing that people make it a point to explicitly hate and throw word vomit against GLBT, judging their lives... if you walk the walk and talk the talk you better do it all the time otherwise it makes you a hypocrite. But please, continue picking and choosing which parts of the bible you want to follow (no gay lovin' allowed but I think I'll be judgmental and hateful because somehow that can be justified). To understand the bible, you need to know history and culture but that requires too much thinking and education and most people don't like to think, they like to be spoon-fed the kool-aid.

Oh yea, almost forgot, Ellen... she will discuss in intimate detail her late night trysts with Portia. Didn't you get an advanced copy of the video footage she plans on showing each week? I did and it was hot. Wait until you see what Portia does with a microphone... it is mind-blowing! Total conversion will happen and the plan will be complete!

*sigh*

I always take the bait to debate and I won't back down 'til you're on the ground.

I'm bummed...

American Idol at my house is like a family event. I was so excited about Ellen, but if there's anything about her and Portia it will be really uncomfortable bc my whole family is rather homophobic. Should be interesting...

Actually, it is almost

Actually, it is almost impossible not to pick and choose when you have such a gathering of ancient text.  I have seen both the left and right do it and admitting that you can pretty much make scripture say whatever you want.  In the end, some of us will still believe in a loving God described in them and some of us never will.

My rule of thumb when reading the scriptures is that romantic love was introduced into an ancient world that did not believe in it and found it foolish.  Sex was power and marriages were contracts.  In this context, their description of homosexual acts is not the kind that we are talking about today.

But then I have chosen the kool-aid long ago, even I am not always charitalbe towards those anti-gay marriage folks.  :)

A Biblical Affirmation of Homosexuality

A very effective and informative defense of homosexuality from a Christian theological perspective.

Loud preachers and evangelists often set up shop outside the student union here at Penn State and shout at people about the sins of homosexuality, feminism, abortion, etc...essentially condemning everyone to hell who is within earshot.
