Safety Tips for College Women

A recent study showed that almost 20 percent of undergraduate women were sexually assaulted during their time in college. Alcohol or drugs played a factor as well. Statistics also showed that 11 percent of college women were assaulted when they were incapacitated and unable to give consent. Freshmen and sophomore women where targeted more than their junior and senior classmates for sexual assaults while they were under the influence of alcohol or any other drug. Other similar findings were announced by The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), which found that college women were 4 times more likely to be sexually assaulted or raped than other women in society.

Below Some Safety Tips

• Keep the college police number handy, call them if you need an escort
• Most colleges offer self defense classes, enroll in one
• Buddy system; try not to walk alone, especially during the night
• At parties:
- Keep your eye on your drink, don't leave it unattended
- Never drink out of the punch bowl
- Always get your own drink, never have others get it for you
• Carry some sort of self defense product, such as a pepper spray or a stun gun
• Always be aware of your surroundings
• Let your fellow students know about these safety tips

It is common sense to follow these tips, just as it is to wear a seat belt when you drive. It's always better to be informed and prepared than to be careless and become a victim.

this was so hilarious

when they were talking about this at freshmen orientation last year. me and this one girl was just laughing. i dont know why...there was this one part where the upper classmen were doing a skit/reading a poem together and each person would say a line from the poem. when they said the line, they would look at us(the audience) then put their head back down. well this one girl was like, "ill probably get AIDS". and me and the girl i was sitting with just started laughing. that was an awesome orientation but yeah-protect yallselves. and most of it is common sense. dont put your self in a vunerable position if you dont have to.

=)

i would strongly recommend kick-boxing... Well it's awesome as a cardio training by itself, builds and enhances stamina as well as strength plus it's simple, safe AND yes, it's got some amazing killer moves to protect yourself...

but when it comes to defence, pretty much it all depends on how calm you can be while focussing on defending yourself rather than attacking the bloody attacker...

and yes, always be careful, but do have lots of fun

Kick-boxing, martial arts or

Kick-boxing, martial arts or any other self defense technique is great! You are right, you can't loose your consentration, freaking out wouldn't help...

I tried taking a martial arts class about 15 years ago for self defense and all though I was learning the moves, when it came to the actual kicking and hitting the opponent, my joints couldn't take it... I loved the techniques and I am pretty strong, but I had to quit because of joint problems.

As I told you. my friend

As I told you. my friend Jennifer just got her black belt in Taekwondo.  I'm interested in that discipline because I've seen her in action.  Taekwondo isn't about kicking the "shit" out of someone, it's about self defense and keeping an offender away from us.  They don't even use the punch in the face, they use their feet.  It's very gracious and I think you kinda build a very good self confidence while practicing that sport.  Jenny is my Best Friend since pre-school.  I doubt I could find someone more simple, funny, caring and lovely around, but when she's on her defensive mode, she's totally an other person.  She will avoid violence at all cost but if she has no choice, all she cares about is defending herself.

Last winter, there was a fight outside of the bus when I arrived at my school.  A girl I know was fighting with Sarah Miller, a crazy bitch that wants to hurt everybody.  The girl she was fighting with was Meghan, and she was in a very bad situation.  Sarah was hitting on her with her feet and her fist, she was scratching her face with her nails and pulling her hair.. it was really ugly.  Meghan was crying and begging her to stop but Sarah Miller wouldn't listen, she was pulling her wintercoat off her when I arrived beside them and tried to stop the fight.  I said to Sarah to let Meghan go.. she already wan the fight and she had nothing else to prove.  Sarah stared at me with rage and hit me right on the mouth with her fist.  I fell on my butt, stunned.  The first thing I checked was if I had a broken tooth but I was lucky.  I just felt my bottom lip bleeding and sweeling.  Sarah was enraged and it was scary to see her.  Jennifer was getting out of the bus when she saw Sarah Miller hitting me on my face and she litterally jumped on her, she kicked her on her arm with her foot, swept her feet off the ground and kept her immobilized until the security guard arrived.  All of this happened in a very short period of time, about 2 or 3 seconds.

Before that, I always thought Taekwondo was like dance or ballet and it was cute to see Jennifer training at it, but when I saw her in a dangerous situation, in action for real and I saw how calm and sure of herself she was and how precise she was in her hit .. I was impressed.  Sarah Miller was the most feared girl at my school.  She has never been beaten before and in less than 3 seconds, Jennifer totally immobilized her and there was nothing Sarah could do against Jenny.

WOW, that is impressive. You

WOW, that is impressive. You should definitely follow her suggestion and get started in your training. Sounds GREAT! To have seen her in action, in real life might have been fate or a sign, that you should learn it.

I used to work with a guy

I used to work with a guy who once worked as a police dispatcher, and he told me that it was much better to carry pepper spray than another weapon, like a knife.  The point isn't so much to stay around defending yourself; instead, it is to get away, and pepper spray is highly effective at making a getaway possible.

I totally agree with that

I totally agree with that too.  I want to avoid violence at all cost.  I'm a "big chicken at heart" anyway lol

Pepper spray works great

Pepper spray works great because you don't have to be at arms length to use it. You can be at a safe distance from an attacker and disable him. The pepper spray would burn his eyes so much, he would have to shut them tight, sometimes they just swell shut, which means that he or she, would not be able to see you!

a little worried

This is going to be my first year in college and I can definitely say I am a bit nervous about this unfortunate part of the experience. I am hoping to be part of the other half but you never know.

I have had pepper spray on my key chain for a year now and it really does make me feel better. I will say one thing though, if you have it, test it once in a while. I tried mine out after a few months and it took 4 tries before it worked effectively.

pepper spray, all the way.

I'm glad you mentioned that,

I'm glad you mentioned that, because it is actually recommended to spray it once when you purchase it. This is to make sure it is not defective. It is also recommended to check it every 3 months and replace it every year.

Remember to shake it once in a while, just like you do any other aerosol and to spray it UPRIGHT, just like you would hairspray!
