A Gay or just Gay?

I hear people saying 'Is she A gay?' as opposed to 'Is she gay?' and I wonder if either one is wrong?

Personally I hate it when we're being referred to as A Gay, surely Gay would be an adjective to describe a person instead of being a noun. Unless its, "is she A gay woman?" than thats fine...

any opinions?
