Item #3 - Widespread Infiltration

The gayest part?  That’s a tough question, as we’ve managed to infiltrate everywhere (item #3 on the Gay Agenda).  The W. and E. Villages, of course.  And Chelsea (mostly men).  But there are a lot of lesbians in Brooklyn now: Dyke Slope Park Slope, Carroll Gardens, Boerum Hill - all over downtown Brooklyn.

I've heard that too...as a Brooklynite...I defintely must go check out those areas...I never even though that somewhere basically in my backyard would be happenin for lesbians.  molto interessante!

Park Slope is definitely the

Park Slope is definitely the gayest part of New York. The west village, chelsea, lower east side, and hell's kitchen are all fine and dandy, but they cater more toward gay men. If you're taking a stroll, you're much more likely to run into lesbians in park slope. But there are some decent lesbian bars in Manhattan, it just depends on what kind of lesbian you're looking for. The Cubbyhole has a good variety, but it's a closet and there's a jukebox, so it really just depends on what dollar toting little dyke gets their hands on it. I've had to sit through Madonna and Melissa Etheridge sessions that were not fun.

that's strange

are u guys sure? I work at Park Slope

imallthumbs's picture

are we sure that it's super

are we sure that it's super gay? yeah, and definitely friendly. i was in north slope this morning and i saw two lesbian couples with their kids having play dates.
abcdef's picture

After more careful

After more careful observation, yeah, perhaps Park Slope is super gay..on mother's day  we had a couple coming, both of them received a rose for mother's day..

Oh yeah, my colleague told me something abt gay parade in the village during summer time, do u guys know when that is? and where it's exactly located?

imallthumbs's picture

gay pride is from june

gay pride is from june 17-24. the parade is on the sunday. it starts up in the 50's and goes all the way down to christopher street into the heart of the west village. basically anywhere near the gay bars in the village is going to be nuts that sunday. the cubbyhole, henrietta's, even the straight, but gayfriendly places like cowgirl are jammed with the gays. check out http://www.nycpride.org/  theres also this huge allgirl party on sat the 23rd on the pier. it's called rapture, and it's on the site. have fun!

how do u meet girls in NYC?

Thank's, I got one more q abt NYC....how do u meet girls here? I wonder whether going to the bar or club is the only way. I just came to NYC like a month ago and I think there's another way where u can meet ppl beside of going to the bar/club right? I work
imallthumbs's picture

Yeah, you can meet people at

Yeah, you can meet people at places other than bars/clubs. There are always lesbian events listed in gonyc magazine. You can read it online. Also the gay center on west 13th street always has readings and events and mixers. Make sure you pick ones you think people your age will be at though, because certain ones end up having all older married couples. I learned that the hard way. They're having Garden Party 24 soon and you can attend or volunteer. It's this huge outdoor thing that Kate Clinton hosts, and they get some gay "celebs" and there's food from different restaurants, and drinks, and dance, and shows. I volunteered it last year and you get the opportunity to meet alot of people. I met Jim McGreevey, Christine Quinn, and Andrew Cuomo, which is kinda cool. The center also has a lot of groups you can join that meet often. Hope that helped.

Run, don't walk, 208 W13th

Oops, sorry – I forgot about this thread.  Yes, Tiff gave you good info.  Def check out the Center (W. 13th St bet 7th-8th).  There’s tons of stuff there.   If you’re not into bars, I’ve always found gay bookstores are great places to meet women.  Or, not-gay bookstores but in gay-friendly areas (The Strand, B&N at Union Sq).  Also, Bluestockings in LES and Housing Works on Crosby.  And I know there are several bookstores on 7th Ave in the Slope.  Also, Time Out NY has special sections for gay/lesbian (in print and online).  Whatsupnyc.com and flavorpill.com also have stuff.   Hmm... that’s off the top of my head.  If I think of anywhere else, I’ll let you know!

abcdef's picture

thank's

I have registered to volunteer at Garden party tho, I think it will b pretty neat..abt bookstores, are those bookstores located in midtown (besides one in the slope)? sorry just got here like a month ago and never really have a chance to explore yet.

Zagay's Guide to NYC

Sorry, didn’t realize you didn’t know your way around.  Someone should make a guide for newly-arrived gays, kind of like a Zagat’s, but make it Zagay’s or something.

If you haven’t done so yet, you should take the train to the Village and just walk around, esp now that the weather’s nice.  I don’t know if you’ve got a good sense of direction or if you’re comfortable with just wandering, but I’ve found that’s a good way to find new places and people.

One suggestion is to go to the W 4th St station and just get out and walk (it lets you out on 6th Ave, either at W.3rd St or W.8th, depending which exit you use).   I assume you know that avenues run north/south and streets are east/west?  You can always find your bearings on an avenue, depending which way the traffic runs (6th Ave runs north – the cars are all heading uptown), so everything to your left is west (W. Village, piers, Hudson River), everything to your right is east (E. Vill, East river, etc).  Fifth Ave is the dividing line bet East/West. Also, the Avenues alternate, so 7th Ave runs south, 8th Ave runs north, etc.

While most of the city follows this simple grid, the W. Vill gets a little hinky in areas – you find little streets that just curve around and run into other little streets.  But most will eventually take you to an avenue where you can determine your location (also, the natives are pretty friendly, so if you do get lost, just ask some cute girl where so-and-so is)!

Wow...maybe that should be a chapter in Zagay’s – how to physically navigate NYC.  Seriously, someone must’ve written a book on this already, right?  Right??

Sorry if this is long and rambling.  I’m still waking up and I tend to ramble until I’ve had my 3rd cuppa.  Well, and then I still ramble, just a bit more coherently.

Bookstores – all the ones I mentioned are downtown (but there are plenty in Midtown if you’re interested.  I just find most of the gay-friendly ones are in or near the Village).  The B&N at Union Sq is at the north end of the park (at 17th St).  The Strand’s main store is on 12th and B’way.  Housing Works is south of both, on Crosby below Houston.  Bluestockings is way over in the E. Vill, on Allen St. somewhere around Rivington  (you should get a map of NYC, maybe find one online).  And you can google any of these bookstores and get more info, esp directions.

This will all either be way too much info (and if you know the direction basics already, I apologize) or maybe this was helpful.

Definitely great information

Definitely great information for her!And the city definitely is a pain to get around in at first. I work in midtown and it is viciously ungay, not to mention a snooze. Your best bets are definitely the villages (I prefer west) and chelsea. And north slope since you live there! It's much easier to spot lesbians while walking around park slope than it is the city though.  The thing about lesbians is that they're (we're - ugh!) a bit cliquey. Once you find an in though, you'll be fine. And I really feel like the center is your best bet. Also, since the summer is rolling in, Chelsea piers is super duper gay. Everyone lays out and brings their dogs and there are sunset acoustic sets and stuff. It can be a little rough around the edges at times, but I tend to like it there.

thank's for the info

Thank's a lot, great info. I'll be going to Perry St tomorrow, I think it's located in West Village, no? I have a subway map (not in a form of a map anymore), so I think I'll survive, thank you again tho.

And about the Zagat thing, I agree..I thought the only way to meet people is by going to the clubs or bars. I've checked out the center's website, unfortunately almost (if I'm not mistaken) all the activities there commence after 5 pm. I work around that time until it's very late, 6 - 7 days a week.

Btw, I live in Queens but worked in Park Slope, I quit yesterday. However thank you tho, your info is much appreciated.

Beach Info

abcdef - since you seem to like the beach (or at least making rafts), you should know about Riis Park – the closest gay beach around.  Well, it has a gay section, anyway.  It’s a pain to get to by train, but worth it.   Def easier by car.  It’s out by Floyd Bennett field in Bklyn (Far Rockaway).  You can google it for more info.  When you get there, if you’re facing the ocean (with the parking lot behind you), the gay part is on your left, at the east end near the baseball diamond.

Of course there’s also Manhattan beach, Brighton beach, Coney Island.  I think it’s a pain getting out to Jones, so those are my alternatives.   With Riis def my preferred choice!

abcdef's picture

thx

Ok, far rockaway..I almost went to bluestocking today, they have this poetry thing opened for everybody tonight, too bad tho, I know it would be cool..oh well, anyway, Queens will have a pride parade on June 3rd, I can't see it all the way through, but an hour or two is better than nothing..right? right..

Thank you so much for the info tho, I really appreciate it.

Btw, I managed to get off my remote island, so a raft is no longer needed, somebody get me Jack Sparrow!!

Went to my first gay club/bar last night...

Yeah, I went to Henrietta's last night in Manhattan.  I had a lot of fun, and apparently (according to my friends) I did a good job for my first gay club as in I didn't freak out or act too awkward.

I'm glad I found this thread though, I hope to have some repeat performances in the near future.  One of my friends was talking about Nations?  Is that a good place?  I'm still so new to this, and last night was a huge step for me.

Henrietta's

I was going to suggest Henrietta Hudson's as a fun place to go.  I've been several time and always had a great time, although some friends who have gone gave it mixed reviews.  http://www.henriettahudsons.com/

I went to the Cubby Hole last time I was home and it was okay.  Very small.  It is what you make of it though.

Z3C's picture

Yeah

I can see how Henrietta's could get mixed reviews.  I guess it depends on what kind of crowd you like.  I thought it was pretty good, however, that was my first experience so I don't have much to go on.  I'll have to check out some more.
