Archery Anyone?
yay :)
ooo traditional eh? I started off on those at the local indoor archery range but ended up buying a conventional one. My bow consists of a metal riser and carbon/wooden limbs.
I figure once I get a lot better... I'll try shooting bare bow, but for now I'm shooting standard Olympic style with all the gadgets (stabilizer, site, clicker...) I started competing on the collegiate level this year.
I really like my bow even if it is metal :D The nice thing about it is that the limbs are interchangeable and so if I ever decide to go up in draw weight, I only need to invest in new limbs... :)
Hmmm so they won't let you use traditional bows at the archery range? or you can't find a local range?
my dream bow is a wooden one
count me in!
wow since you were 5? Did
wow since you were 5? Did you get started because your Dad was interested?
I love shooting :) I fell in love with it the first time I tried it... even though all I could do was occasionally get the arrow to stay in the wall ;P
So it seems so far traditional bows are preferred over metal ones ><" hehe
It does wonders for your deportment, you know...
Indeed it does. I started shooting at school, although there was minimal emphasis on actually hitting a target; far more important was the fact that one has to stand up straight to shoot properly (and they were right, we all carried ourselves like real ladies by the time we left.)
I rediscovered an interest in archery qua archery later, sort of a collateral effect of my specialisation in central asian archaeology. So now I combine my liking for archery, my love-affair with the horse, and academic curiosity by being an enthusiastic horse archer. I have several bows, but my favourite by far is a Grozer Sacytha-scythian; 50lbs @ 30" draw length. Amazing cast, l Iove the thing to bits.
And (when I'm on foot) archery still does wonders for my posture; Mother Mary Patrick would be proud of me...

horse archer???? respect!!!
ooo
To repeat notchegeva's sentiments... horse archer? wow :) I saw some random clip on YouTube of people doing that in Japan I think? Intense stuff... I don't think I can hit a moving target let alone be moving... :P
Interesting, haven't heard of the Grozer Sacytha-scythian.. I shall have to do some research :)
actually it's like a family
actually it's like a family thing... we all love that!! we used to always challenge each others with my sister my parents and cousins and stuff and there was never anything to win except for the fact that in the end you were the queen/king of the castle of course...
I really understand that you can fell in love with shooting, it's just such a great feeling, and normally you progress pretty quick, but there is always something new to try or to make better... That's just so cool!!!
sorry I'm kind of a big fan!
And for the record there is nothing wrong with modern bows, they are great if not greater for a lot of things, especially if you want to compete of course!, but that's a different feeling to shoot with a traditionnal one, I would recommend you to try, just to feel the difference!
:)
haha dude, totally don't need to apologize for being a big fan :) I totally understand what you mean. The highlight of my week is going to shoot and now that outdoor season is starting, I'm really excited :)
It totally is exciting to change different parts of your form, or just try out new things and see how that affects your shooting.
So aside from being wooden, what constitutes a traditional bow? I've shot a wooden bow... but aside from that, I can't feel a big difference aside from no accessories (site, stabilizer, etc) :P The only thing I can imagine is how one uses a completely different form to shoot barebow.
btw love your picture :) MaiHiME rocks! :)
:)
I guess my archery class in High School doesn't count. ;)
I enjoy archery, but I can't say I am great at it.
well, I'm not really an
well, I'm not really an archer I guess... but I have a groovy compound bow I got for Christmas a few years ago, and I love to go out and shoot on my mums property. Actually getting a compound made such a difference to learning how to shoot/aim (on my own). It just became so much more obvious what I was doing that was wrong because there wasn't the tension involved in holding the arrow drawn.
Mum would actually love to do a bit of Kyudo, but the closest place to do that is hours away. It's interesting stuff for sure!
lalala
Well it doesn't matter if you only did it in High School, as long as you had fun and want to learn more about archery :)
ooo compound eh? That doesn't mean you're not an archer :P It is just a different kind. I have a friend who just started compound a year ago. She is loving it :) Kyudo eh? cool :) I know that there are a lot of people at school who wanted to do that but alas the club here is all about modern shooting and competition *shrug*
...
hehe, my bow is shiny and red ;D ! It always makes me think of playing the Rogue in Diablo... and then I want to go questing (I'm such a nerd!).
I was always more interested in the tradition recurve bows, but then after getting the compound I'm glad that's what I've got. It means I can have a heavier draw without it being too much to hold when aiming(I think it's set up to about 40-45 pounds). It also means I can happily shoot for longer without getting too tired.
For a total amateur, I'm not entirely attrocious ;D
Mind you, I could do with a lesson or two to properly learn what I'm doing.
bring back the memorings
I did do archery at camp years ago... well when i was 10 or 11.. It was my first time, and I remeber loving it, for the thrill of it, as I could recall I remebered my group won the competion, I think someone in our group got most of the points... I cant remeber what was the points or the rule of it...lol.. I did get few bulleseye but the point was I love it... it was different from other sport i ever did... If I had the oppurntunity, i would do it again...
competition
*grin* camp archery :) I remember trying it when I was a lot younger too, didn't actually pick it up seriously until now though. If you still want to do it again, merely go online and try to find a shooting range nearby :) No need to own your own bow, just find a place that will let you rent and shoot on the hour. I'm lucky because there is a place about 30 minutes from where I live and the club on campus finally got shooting space.
Competition can be exciting, though so far I'm finding it more stressful than relaxing. The only plus side of it so far is how much time I get to spend with other archers and just hang out and have fun with my team. *shrug* though it does seriously help your mental concentration, or make you realize how little of it you have :P
that's great!!
to all of you you have no idea how happy I am to see that they are so many girls that are into archery!!!
good for you either wooden bow, or compound, or firetruck riding archers!! and don't forget nobody cares if you're good or not, if you have a modern or an ancient bow as long as you enjoy it!
To duckEEballer : so cool that you recognized my picture, and I totally agree on the concentration part. Shooting is really the thing where you immediatly see if you are somewhere else, that's particularly true when you start shooting the people around you... but believe me, don't, that's kinda frowned upon!
not since high school
ouchy
hahaha I know I've nearly got shot at.. sometimes I forget what line I'm in and start to go pull my arrows when the second line is about to go up... :P My team thinks I'm gonna get myself killed :D
oo yeah. inner elbow, very easy place to get bruises... I had a big one for the longest time. I find that the bow string also makes a difference. Dacron gave me a lot of bruises as compared to fastflight or dinema *shrug* you just have to really really think about your elbow and force your arm to straighten out since it is totally not a natural position....
...yeah I haven't seen archery improve my posture yet :D
For all you round-shouldered types
Dear Peeps,
I thought I might provide a link to a website, so's you could all look at the goods and say "omigod, I want one of those - and one of those, and three of those.." There's lots of nice things there - eyecandy for the toxophilite.
http://www.bowshop.eu/
Now, about posture; oh my little archerlings, what are you doing? I don't want to see folks hunched over, shoulders hitched up around their ears - this is simply not acceptable. Stand up to the mark, feet apart, straighten that back, open those shoulders...Dammit, anyone else noticed it's become warmer in here? Hmmm. Having established that I would make a rotten coach for any attractive and sexually deviant young woman, I'll simply urge you all to keep that spine straight and those shoulders loose; even the A cups amongst you will notice the difference...
Love'n'Kisses

Why?
why would you do that to me??? posting this link was just mean!!!!
no just kidding, thanx a lot, there are some wonderful bows there... What is the best way to win a lot of money fast?
I would like a mongol bow, and a horse, and then I guess I will be all set up to start the horse archer thing... I can totally picture myself half naked on my horse with the sun rising behind me...
Actually I could maybe win money this way, you know like entering a mall and asking for cash, with the horse and the bow, I'm sure that would work...
for those in america you may
for those in america you may want to check this site

Well I must say I'm surprised to see so many people into archery, *glee*. I used to shoot at my high school's club (Need to find a new local one now) and I was okay, we had casual competitions, nothing too amazing, but I did enjoy it. I'm also the only person in the club to have ever had an archery related accident. << But it hasn't put me off!
I've had one too...
well sort of. It was more of an accident whilst trying to pull the damn arrow out of the target (they often get stuck solid). Anyway, I managed to dig a nice little chunk of skin off my chest with the nock... which proceeded to scar up well :C
Trust me to find some unique way to stab yourself with an arrow.
Ouch.
That does not sound like fun.
I was stringing my bow- the stringer came off, and the bow limb went for me.
It sliced through my eyebrow and ripped a lot of the blood vessels in my eye. :(
It's never opened fully since, so I look a little lopsided if you look closely. As well as having a natty scar through the eyebrow (Many shaving jokes about it)
And I have lots of black spots and what I dub "tear lines" in my vision, its like little translucent lines everywhere. Very distracting. But I survive!
Archery
o dear
LOL wow I really shouldn't find that funny but yeah... ;P
I love all the lovely archery anecdotes on this forum :P
