Hi to any Aussies here - I just pulled this from an email, trying to spread the word wherever possible!
As you may or may not be aware, in the last couple
of weeks the federal senate voted to send the Marriage Equality
Amendment Bill 2009 (lodged by Greens senator Sarah Hanson-Young) to an
inquiry. This Bill seeks to amend the Marriage Act to allow Australian
same-sex marriages and recognise same-sex marriages performed overseas.
Please take a look at this link http://www.australianmarriageequality.com/senatesubmission.htm and
take the time to make a submission as soon as possible. When a similar
enquiry was held in 2004, conservative groups organised themselves a
lot better than pro-gay groups did, resulting in a more than 4:1 ratio
in favour of negative submissions. With recent poll results showing a
majority of Australians now favour same-sex marriage, it's time for
things to change. It's really important that the inquiry hears about
the personal impact of the continuing ban on same-sex marriage on all
of us; get your voice heard!
This is a really important step towards equality, so get
your opinion to count by making a submission, asking your friends and
family to make submissions and attending the Equal Love rallies in major cities on August
1.

Thanks OP for posting on here...
I usually keep myself to myself politically, other than voting. But for once I feel...well, enough to grow a pair & get involved.
So I wanted to post what I submitted and see what everyone thinks of it because I'm nervous (not just for the grammatical errors - had to submit before I chickened out), so I hope it passes muster:
I am sure you will receive more detailed and cogent arguments, more impassioned pleas, but what I want to say is that I do not want my family, my friends and their families, to be treated with disrespect or discrimination. Nor do I want that for anyone, especially those within my own country.
And yet that is how this country currently treats two consenting adults wishing to enter into the state of marriage. That is how the law would treat me if I found someone I loved, someone that I wanted to share my life with, someone that I wanted to officially join with and share marriage rights, responsibilities and benefits with; but only if that person happened to be the same sex as I.
Well, that doesn't sit too well with me.
As an Australian I would like my right to marry to be upheld regardless of the gender of the person I wish to marry - and I would wish the same for all other Australians.
Oh gods I hope it at least makes sense...it's 2:30AM and my eyes are too tired and my brain died years ago...at least it's submitted under agreement, that's the main thing, right?
Yes! That was great.
Going to the Sydney rally!
Huzzah! I don't actually care much about marriage, really, but to me - this is about gaining equality and acknowledgement that same sex relationships are the same as hetero relationships. Not being able to marry someone of the same sex is alienating and petty.
I really like the Equal Love campaign videos on youtube. Seen them?
