So, I'm thinking about moving to Vegas to do some graduate research, and I haven't heard many good things about the city. It seems like outside the tourist district the town as a whole is fairly conservative, for lack of a more appropriate word. I don't need to be immersed in gay culture 24/7, but I don't want to be totally uncomfortable with the community either. Do you find as a local that it isn't too accepting? I have always been happy while on vacation there but recent time in the vegas suburbs left a lot to be desired. As a resident, I'd appreciate your input.
Well Cynm, I can tell you how I feel, but keep in mind that between work and work, (and being too stubborn to accept a new surrounding) I haven't really immersed myself in the "scene" of Vegas. There is a portion of Las vegas abotu 10 minutes off the strip called the "Fruit Loop." If you couldn't tell by the name, it is extremely queer friendly.
Sadly, as far as community areas away from the strip (like where I live) it's all soccer mom's and mini-vans. There is an exciting Lesbian Drinking Group (They pretty much meet up at nice bars and discuss life, and how much they resent your laughter...or any laughter*). I hope my opinion doesn't keep you from coming out and enjoying what may be incredibly fun for you. Remember, I'm not 21, so a lot of what i could possibly be enjoying, I'm not yet allowed to enjoy. there may be a huge lesbian underground here I'm too yound (according to laws) to be aware of...but i doubt it.
My girlfriend and I are coming to Vegas next week for a little vacation.. how do we find the fruit loop? What does it consist of... friendly eateries. gay bookstores, gay merchandise, etc? Thanks in advance!
