Visibility in Vietnam
For the Vietnamese women out there, we know that our beloved country, Vietnam, is a very conservative state, politically and socially. Many people consider homosexuality as a mental sickness. Recently though, I've watched this Vietnamese drama with my father, and in the beginning, there was a scene that caught my eye. It was very brief, a minute at most. The name of the drama was Bong Nhung Muon Khoc, english translation "Suddenly Wanting to Cry". The lead male character got drunk, and the lead girl took him home in the taxi. The taxi driver turned out to be a lesbian through the conversation between the lead girl and her. I really don't remember the whole dialogue, but after finding out that the taxi driver was gay, the main character's reaction was "What? What did you say?" The taxi driver responded, "Oh nothing." I looked at my dad and asked him "How is it possible for them to talk about gay people?" My father respond was "Our society is changing. People are more free to talk about this. The more our society progress the easier to accept things." It's been on my mind for a couple of days. I hope that this idea is true. I've moved to the US when I was seven. It's been tweleve years now. Honestly, I never heard of the word gay until I got here. Now, there are a lot more people who know that "gay" is. Even if it is perceived as a negative thing,at least they acknowlege the existence of LGBT people. The Vietnamese economy is changing rapidly. Communism isn't what it used to be. Even though it was only a minute of mentioning about a gay character, it's a start, a very slow start. I've been out of the loop with the Vietnamese culture for a really long time now. Is there any other pop culture that mentioned LGBT content? If you know any, I would appreciate it. I hope that one day Vietnam will be a free state with freedom of speech. I hope that one day, we can see LGBT rights in Vietnam, maybe a pride parade ^_^? Wishful thinking, I know.
