Gro Hammerseng and Katja Nyberg

I love handball, and aren't Hammerseng and Nyberg the cutest couple...?? I think they are so cute together and Gro is one of the most sexy girl I have ever seen!

Congratulations on the olympic GOLD medal!!!

I wondered when their names

I wondered when their names were gonna pop up here. :-P
I love handball, too, am addicted, actually, and yes, these two are definitely the cutest couple! I'm glad that they're actually going to play some handball again this season. They've really been unlucky with injuries. I hope both of them will make it to and through the World Championship this year!
xevus's picture

Ohhh, Gro....

I am very spoiled with good womens handball here in Hungary, but with Gro I definitely have some unpatriotic thoughts... I don't think that she is the best (for that title there is Anita Görbicz or Bojana Radulovic) but far the mooooost delicious and a close third in my all star team! and cute... and gay... and strong... and beautifull... *faints*
bogdanski's picture

it d be great if Gorbicz

it d be great if Gorbicz woulde be lesbian, hmmmm?Do you live in Budapest?you really don t like guys at all...?WHY?How come you re lesbie?

Anyway you re very very beautifull and sexy too...

oh, it's so great to see

oh, it's so great to see handball fans here, there used to be a handball thread (and probably still is somewhere around here) but no one posted there for a VERY loooong time... and yes, gro and katja are just so cute together! plus they're great handball players, gro was amazing during the last euro championship, too bad katja got injured early on.
Linda's picture

:)

I'm from Norway, and womens handball are very big here (mens handball not so big..). It's a little bad that most of the best players goes to Denmark to play, but I survive :). Well as the patriot I am I think Norway is the best and Gro deserved the title from the euro championship for second time in a row. She also got som prizes at a galla for athletes in norway in january, and one was for beeing the best role model.. She and Katja were going together and they were cute as always.

I remember I almost started crying when I saw Katja getting injured agian.. Gro was intervied right after the game and she wasn't far from crying either... Katja must be one of the most unfortunate players..., but she played defense for IKAST for some minutes not so long ago so I guess she is doing better :)

I dont like Görbicz too much because I think she is too much of a diva on the court, and she seems to not like to play against Norway.., but hungary have a greate team and they always put up great fight.

marshmallow's picture

Well, now I had to counter

Well, now I had to counter that picture of Gro avatar-wise. ;-)

I am German and not patriotic at all, so Norway is the one I cheer for, too. They just got the greatest players.

I was also very depressed when I heard (literally, I was listening to P4 to follow the match), that Katja was seriously injured. Don't want to know how she and the rest of the team felt. The day after it almost seemd like she had to cheer up Gro instead of the other way around. =) I liked Katja's comment about drinking two, three beers. She never loses her humor!

When my BFF and I were in Randers last year, we recorded this little clip of IBEH "dancing" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUatzFd7XSY We were very excited! :-P

@xevus: Ikast/Bording will play against Debrechen in a few weeks. So you might even get the chance to see Katja and Gro. (Not to mention, that Larvik will play against Györ and Hungary will meet Norway tomorrow and Saturday - I am really looking foward to that!)
Linda's picture

Yeah Norway do have great players

I think that is one of the reasons many people like the norwegian womens handball team, because they have such good people on the team, and the coach, Marit, is a genious!! The way she coach and let everyone have an opinion is great, and she almost never yell or mouth of to the players, and they still win...

The game tomorrow will be shown on the norwegian channel TV2.. But Gro and Katja will not be playing.. the team got so much crap from IKAST because they both came home injured from the EC, so they are speard. And it is more important that they get well so they are with us in France in desember:)

Germany has great players too... and the team seems to be coming back with new players...

Larvik is the best team in Norway, and it is getting kind of boring, because they win everything against norwegian teams.. But there are several lesbians/bi girls on that team and it makes it a little more interesting.

sunflower's picture

who?

who on larvik's team is lesbian/bi? i remember reading something about tonje larsen going to gay clubs, is she gay? i know this is a silly question, but i'm kinda curious and since i don't speak norwegian/danish it's really difficult for me to find out anything about these players that's not strictly connected to handball...

Linda's picture

the lesbian/bi..

Tonje Larsen isn't out in the media, but she is bi/gay. When europride was in Oslo I saw her at the womens night, so I'm pretty sure she is bi or lesbian. And Lene Rantala the keeper, I think she is gay too, not totally sure, but she is a good friend of Katja Nyberg, and she gives me gay vibes... Under the EC she was "bayby sitting" Pontus, who is katja and gro's dog.

I don't know for sure if there are any others right now, but for some years ago my girlfrend met half the team in a lesbian nightclub in Oslo after they had played a match in Oslo....

I have been living in Trondheim so long now that it is hard to keep up with whats happening around Oslo...

sunflower's picture

lene rantala

oh, i've always thought lene rantala might be gay, she definitely sets my gaydar off. but then again, my gaydar kinda sucks :?

Sorry for my ignorance

but how is handball played? To my knowlege it is not a sport played in Canada (maybe NOrth America). If you followed North American sports, you would think there are only 4 - football (not the soccer variety), basketball, baseball, and hockey. I have to get all my cycling news off the web. Cheers.

Snooker

Imagine that I live in Romania and I love watching the snooker championship, but sometimes I am too tired, too busy and many other excuses like these. Our sport news don't care about snooker so that is why I use the internet as well. << Buy Steroids >>
marshmallow's picture

Basically...

Handball - at least women's handball - is not very popular in Germany either, so I was also clueless for quite some time. I'm totally mad at our media now, because how was I supposed to know how great this sport is, if it's never shown anywhere? Besides, I think women's handball does look a lot better than men's. My gay best friend agrees, too (for some reason he even has a thing for Valerie Nicolas).
Handball is somewhat complicated to explain. Maybe not as complicated as baseball (which is beyond me), but still!
Very basically, there is a field (20x40m), two goals, six fieldplayers and a goalkeeper (per team respectively). The teams switch from defense to offense either after a goal or a technical foul. The fieldplayers dribble and pass similar to how it's done in basketball. They (neither defending nor offensive team) must not step into the area surrounding the goal (radius is 6m). So, the defending team assembles along the area (most times at least), kind of similarly to the zone defense in basketball. They try to keep the other team from passing, shooting and scoring (duh!), whereas the offensive team tries to break through the defense (literally, actually - the duels are much more physical than in soccer or basketball), jump into the "forbidden" area to get closer to the goal (they must shoot before touching the ground, though) and/or shoot from about eight, nine meters.
The whole jumping-into-the-area looks especially good, when the wings do it, IMO. But to shoot from nine meters and scoring is also very impressing. It takes some power to do that with all the defense players and goalkeeper in the way!
For more, you should probably read about handball on Wikipedia or watch a little, I guess. There are some clips on YouTube now. Just search for "Handball" and "Norway" and you'll get right to the best! :-P

Sooo nice to see a cute open couple. Just wish the media would lay off them during championships..

funny

I've been reading what all of you wrote about Gro and Katja, and how cute and great they are. Well my apologie, cause I'll dissapointed some of you, but about Gro I hardly can say that I have nice opinion. I thought she's ok, I met her trought mutual friend, and after a while I realised that she's an ass hole (not nice word, but she really is). I agree that she looks good and that she's a good player (mostly cause she has a heart for the game not so much brain in that, about handball skill i would give my voice to Popovic, Gorbicz, Neli Ardeanu and Poltoroskaja). Didn't have that 'pleasure' (yet) to meet Katja, but am really wondering who is fooling who in that relathionship. Anyone who knows handball and about handball , also knows that they wanted to play together and that Krim wasn't so thrilled with Katja, plus Ikast wouldn't ever offer to buy Katja if Gro didn't say they are dating. Katja has great handball knowledge, but Ikast didn't need her, anyway they are always 4th and can't be better. So all in all, I can say and am standing behind my words, all that you see is only half (better or worse)of what really is.

Salut

Dane's picture

Huh?? Explain please..

That sounds pretty harsh. You can't just say that and not say what she did or say to make you have such a poor opinion of her.. but since you seem to have all the inside info, why don't you tell us WHY you think she's an a**hole?

As for Katja, I saw their match in Ikast yesterday and Katja totally rocked and scored 10 goals. So much for Ikast not needing her.

europe_winter's picture

10 goals!!!!!

Hmm, it's funny that you are mentioning Katja's 10 goals. As I know they played against Team Tvis, the poorest team in Toms league, they are on the bottom of the table and they are going out from the league, so to score 10 times against them wasn't so hard(Team Tvis already has more than 600 goals in their own net, althought Poulsen isn't a bad keeper).Am wondering where are those 'stars' against big teams (not counting Milanovic in here, casue she showed last season who really is the best Ikast player). You asked me also to say WHY I guess your favorite player (or one of them) as an _ _ _. I'll just say it's opinion based on personal experience. And yes I do have a lot of inside infos.

I saw that someone was asking about Lene Rantala,so yes she is 100% gay. Since when?, I don't know, but in past 14 years she is a gay.

Salut

Dane's picture

Yes, 10..

Sure, it's easier to score 10 goals against Team Tvis than against, say, Slagelse or Viborg, not going to disagree there. But with Katja coming back from injury scoring 10 goals in a match is always a plus when it comes to confidence and match practice, so.. good for her.

I don't really care who is the best player, I just think it's good to see Nyberg getting back in the game.

Linda's picture

Okay...

Vel you may have "inside" info on Gro and how she is, but she is very private to the rest of the world... And the way she is in media and how the rest of the team talks about her makes her a good role model for many lesbian/bi people in Norway and elsewhere... And that is a good thing, because it is neded...

And until she treats me like an ass I will think she is a great person :) And it was obvious to everyone else too that getting Katja to Ikast when she was injured had something to do with Gro..., but when she gets 100% again, she will probably be worth the mony, time and effort!!

europe_winter's picture

scoring

Well Dane I've nothing against Katja, au contre, it's nice to see her playing and coming back in form. It's good for her and handball as a sport. She was pretty unlucky and lost a lot of playing time cause of all those injuries. It's always good to have more good players in a league, quality is higher and games are better (I would like to see how 'new' Slagelse and Viborg will functionate from September, especially 'chemistry' between Popovic and Skov, he, he, he. And will be good if GOG and Randers could stand next to top 4, just to make Championship more interesting, cause like this is always the same, Slagelse, Viborg, Ikast and Aalborg are always in play off. Esbjerg, Århus and Fox are coming up and down from 1.division to the league,.....).

About your comment Linda:

as I know playing handball and being gay in Norway is not a big deal, it's more than normal and usual (especially in Gro's ex team Gjøvik, I think only few players there are straight, at least two Croatians who came there last season are straight).A few years ago in Denmark (in handball world) was fashion to be a gay, it's usual in Romanian, Greek,Spanish, Turkish ......women handball. It maybe looks strange, but I think among all sports in handball is the highest procent of homosexuality. (It is ok, but shouldn't put that on first place, and talk about that as something so special, on first place should be a game and sport, everything else can wait). You should start to play handball or to spend more times with handball player, make some friends, so you will see the other side of medal and you will know about what am talking.

xevus's picture

handball and gayness?

Unfortunately don't go hand in hand (pun intended) in Hungary... We have not even one out sportsman, no men, no woman. There are some gossips, but they all play nice to the homofobe, partriarchal status-quo :(

Linda's picture

...

No it's not a big deal beeing gay and playing sports in Norway, and there are many gay handball players who are out. That's probably why there seems to be so many gay players in handball, but since not everyone are out in the other sporst I think it is hard to say what is the gayes sport. There might be a lot of gay people that are out "privatly", but not so many are out in the media...

And it is the sport side that are the most important, thats why I like to watch and why I used to play when I was younger... I know that it is a hard sport and I don't live in some protected buble.., but as far as I know, since I don't know any of the players on the personal basis, they are all nice until proved otherwise... I don't judge people on the basis of what others think. A big reason for that is that everyone sees people diffrently and how people connect is dependent on their personalities... So what I'm trying to say is just because some person that I don't know say some one is an ass dosen't mean that I will think the same... And since you just say trust me she is an ass, but doesn't say why I chose to think she is a great person until proven otherwise :) And that doesn't mean she is not an ass, becase I really don't know, I chose to like her on the basis that she is an incredible hanball player, she is gay, she likes dogs or at least Pontus, and she is pretty.

In English

Here it is for the non-danish speaking folks:

"Class seeks class

It was important for it to be black. Silver would have been ok, but black is nicer.

The eyes are sparkling and you can sense the joy and expectation. Norwegian European champion in women's handball Katja Nyberg - who plays for Ikast Bording - has just recieved the keys to her and girlfriend Gro Hammerseng's brand new car, a black metallic Mercedes C180 Station wagon. Nyberg doesn't wan't to hand the keys over to anyone, but she doesn't mind telling why it just had to be a Mercedes.

"I've always wanted one and when the chance was there, I had no doubt. We had a Japanese car until now and we were happy about that, but this is something very special" Katja Nyberg states with a glow in her voice. She is more interested in cars than the average woman and her demands for a personal vehicle are clearly defined.

"It has to be spacious and it's a station wagon because of my dog. It's important that he can come along. Besides it's a good thing that the car can go fast - where it's allowed - without you getting the feeling that everything is falling apart" says Katja Nyberg.

Gro Hammerseng doesn't say much. She has gotten used to the thought that she will mainly be in the passenger seat.

"It is important for me that it is just that brand. I think the 180 represents a simple, stylish design. It is simply a classy car" Katja Nybrg states while she kindly but firmly directs Gro Hammerseng to the passenger seat. "

 (source http://www.ibeh.dk/ndefault.asp?id=146 )

I left out a few technical details about the car in the translation.

@ xevus - are you aware that Gro and Katja are coming to Hungary? Ikast is playing Debrecen on sunday, the 25th. They - Ikast - won the first match on saturday in Ikast but only by two goals (26-24) so it could go either way in Hungary..

DVSC - IKAST

Thanks Dane for reminding me, it almost sliped my mind 'cause the busy time at work, I still can't believe March is almost over...

I probably won't be able to go to the game though, since I am getting another uni. degree and my classes are during that very week-end :'''( Another problem is that we don't have a fast highway from Budapest to Debrecen, so the travel time is pretty long. *sight* as many excuses I may find, I still have a burning urge to go:)) I would looooove a picture with Gro in my office, both as a role model and a pretty lady;)

But I will catch it on tv for sure!! Anyone from Hungary, it will be on Sunday, 18:00, Sport 1!

Ah yes, sometimes life just get's in the way of watching live handball - don't you just hate that? ;)

I live about a two-hour train ride from Ikast, but I've only gone to one game, and that was recently. But I did promiss myself to go as often as possible as long as Katja and Gro still play in Denmark - who knows where they will go after Ikast, so I must take advantage of having them fairly near by while I can.

I had a nice little Hammerseng-moment when I was there.. During the warm-up she lost her ball and it went out into the audience - right where I was sitting! She came to get it and beamed one of those amazing Gro smiles right at me... *sigh* I won't forget that anytime soon :)

In an interview with Norwegian tv from December 2005, Gro says they have been together for about two months. You can find the interview here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jno2HQAwW_U

Most of it is in Norwegian, but the last minute or so is in English. That's where she talks - to Robbie Williams - about being in love.

ok, so the game was..

..all right, nothing spectacular, likable, since there was almost no fight-fight, I really like when sportsmen do sports not beating up each other. The game itself was among the less pretty ones, a lot of goal-situations were not used on both sides (yes, even our beloved Gro missed the cleanest shot ever, as I recall, not even one, but two, and Katja did not score even once). The end is a win-win situation of a kind, yes, WE WON (Yihaaaaa:))) But with only one goal, soooo at the end it is Ikast that can continue the competition.

We finished up watching the game at home, but entertained the ide- while looking at a group of shaved headed, kind of extreemist looking supporters- that it would have been such a ball if us two would cheer for the other team, waiving a rainbow flag :)

Dane's picture

Vote for Gro

Hey xevus :) Thanks for the recap!

I was frantically searching the net last night to find something - anything! - about the game. Then when the result finally came up on Ikast's site I was pretty happy! YAY - Ikast won overall! I saw some pictures on Debrecen's homepage of those supporters. They sure look .. fierce. Would have been very cool with a rainbow flag in the middle there :))

Gro related news, kind of.. The International Handball Federation have nominated a number of players for the title of player of the year 2006. And - guess what? - they nominated Gro! I know it has been said here previously that she is not the best player, but IHF actually stress that it is not only about scores and statistics, it is also about being a role model and an ambassador of the sport. Now, who could that be other than Gro? Well, Katja maybe ;)) If anyone wants to vote, here it is: http://www.ihf.info/front_content.php?idcat=57&idart=690

4 Hungarians so far:)))

Well, my spirits are hight from the sight that there is 4 Hungarian players already selected as number ones (sad fact, Anita Kulcsár died before she was nominated - her and Bojana Radulovic were such a team that it was amazing!!)

I forgott to mention that Gro's and Katja's relationship did come up, once during the comments an I was pleasantly supriced by the normality of it (you see, public remarks on homoszexuality here are far from being matter-o-factly or kind...). The commentator guy admired both Gro and Katja for being wonderfull players and top of the world's and after a good action he said that Hammerseng and Nyberg are not only a well operating pair on the field but also in real life as well, since they are a pair...aaaand back to the game...

so it was nice, I think it would bother me if it did not get mentioned
