Season 5

So, what are u guys thinking about The L Word not being renewed yet? I have to say I am really starting to freak. I have never felt this strongly about a show being canceled. Yeah, I have been upset when shows get canceled, but usually thats where it ends. I have been obsessing every day trying to find out if there has been word one way or another. I am really starting to doubt its renewal its just seems like it has past its time. :( I found this link to request it to be renwed please vote for it to get renewed!!

RE:

well if that site has anything to do with it it will not be canceled. 841 votes in favor of another season is pretty reassuring.

The L Word

I think SHO has just not announced the renewal at the bequest of Ilene Chaiken, probably to keep everyone wondering what's going on.

FIVE TIMES THE LOVE! LUST! LAUGHS! LONGING!
SHOWTIME'S THE L WORD® RETURNS FOR A FIFTH SEASON
Groundbreaking Drama Series to Begin Production This Summer

LOS ANGELES (March 8, 2007) -- On the heels of a year highlighted with industry recognition and critical acclaim for its award-winning original programming including WEEDS, DEXTER, and BROTHERHOOD, SHOWTIME has ordered a fifth season of its hit drama series THE L WORD®, it was announced today by Robert Greenblatt, President of Entertainment, SHOWTIME Networks Inc. Twelve new episodes are set to begin production this summer and premiere on SHOWTIME sometime in early 2008. The series was recently nominated for the GLAAD Media Award for Outstanding Drama Series.

"THE L WORD® is a signature franchise for us and one of our most popular series,” says Greenblatt. “This season's guest star Cybill Shepherd and new series regular Marlee Matlin are indicative of the show's great quality. With our launch of OurChart.com (a social networking site that grew directly out of THE L WORD®), and the show's growing popularity in Second Life, this series goes well beyond the boundaries of a mere television show. Since its launch in 2004, the zeitgeist has never been the same."

THE L WORD®, which premiered its fourth season on January 7th, is one of SHOWTIME’s most popular series, generating a large and loyal audience, as well as critical praise for its provocative, sexy storylines, the principal cast and for being a magnet for celebrated directors and guest stars. Premiering Sundays at 10 p.m. PT/ET with several multi-plays during the week and available on the ever-growing SHOWTIME ON DEMAND, the groundbreaking series follows a group of Los Angeles-based friends as they navigate careers, families, friendships, inner-struggles and romantic entanglements. Since its debut in January 2004, THE L WORD® has become part of American popular culture, spawning dedicated fan websites and blogs, along with ancillary products such as THE L WORD®-branded perfume, jewelry and books.

THE L WORD® is executive produced by Ilene Chaiken through her production company Little Chicken Inc. The series was created by Chaiken and Kathy Greenberg & Michele Abbott and is being distributed internationally by MGM International Television Distribution, Inc.

I wouldn't be surprised if

I wouldn't be surprised if the show gets cancelled. They have been on a steady ratings nose-dive since season one. And they always manage to start having some pretty descent stories when the season is half way over, like now. I hope it goes at least one more season. I hate when shows get cancelled with no definitive conclusion.

Renewal

anidchick I read the information on l word.com and I think it mentioned showtime announcing its renewal also. I must admit ladies this is the first I have heard of the show being cancelled/ not being renewed which is just totally unacceptable and pathetic if the rumour is true..

Hmm..

Well, I haven't been able to find anything online which says it has been renewed.  This being the case, I think I may have mis-spoke and it is still up in the air.

Sadly, it is a

Sadly, it is a very realistic possibility that this could be the last season of TLW. The worst thing that could have happened to the series was Showtime changing from Viacom's control to that of CBS.  The following quote from CBS CEO Les Moonves pretty much sums up the reason why:

"Anybody who knows me knows that audiences are the
thing," Moonves said. "I'm a populist. You can take your reviews and
stick 'em––just give me big audiences."

If he stands by that, it doesn't bode well for the future of this series.  His primary goal is to match the ratings success of rival network HBO and any programming that doesn't fit with that goal will be gone.  Unfortunately, no amount of petitions or fan protests will change that because they don't represent significant numbers of new viewers and that is all the network is interested in at the moment.

Last season's largely unpopular storylines only succeeded in driving off a substantial portion of the show's core audience causing the series to start the 4th season in a ratings hole from which it may never recover.  If it is cancelled, Ilene Chaiken has no one to blame but herself.

The only mention I have seen of a 5th season renewal has been this very website and it was noted as being unannounced

I am keeping my fingers

I am keeping my fingers crossed but as more and more time goes by I am less optomistic....

It's possible

If the show gets cancelled it will be because of low ratings. The show's ratings have greatly decreased since the shows first season. Look up the stats. It may not look that way because they are really promoting it this year but that might be the reason why. Showtime had no problems cancelling Dead Like Me and Huff, who were both critical successes that were nomimated for Emmys, beause of low ratings so I doubt they would have a problem cancelling The L Word which has gotten mixed reviews over the years and no big awards nominations. That said it'll probably get at least another season especially if the ratings improve this season, which seems to be their best as far as content goes. QaF had 5 seasons. I don't see why The L Word wouldn't get 5.
Villanelle's picture

OMG that's so sad

isn't it truly sad that the most we will get is another season? what next? the only show i watch will be over then? sooner or later... or rather sooner!!!!???

I have also read on L word.com early last month that season 5 had been commissioned. Season 4 doesnt even have an airdate for the uk yet, but I have been kept up to date with its goings on by this site and the L word.com. these sites are my L word bible at the moment.

Contradiction is not good but my faith is strong. viva la seasnon 5!!!

i miss carmen!!! and dana, i dont blame rates for dopping, its not the same without them.
granuaileo's picture

I hope it's not Ilene

I so feel that woman messing with people. She's probably loving all the buzz on the 'net about this. A little sadistic, perhaps?

I just emailed showtime and said I'd discovered my cable provider really will let you order one premium channel, for under $20 per month (all I've found on their web site or in their literature is packages for $100+). They just hide that information. I had to talk to a rep to find out. I've been going to L-Word parties, and will probably still go if I continue to watch, but I told showtime that I'm going to order . . as soon as I know if the L Word is renewed. Even if I get too po'd to watch, I'll order showtime for it. I'd like to see it stay on, since it's the only lesbian show out there.

I am not sure where people

I am not sure where people are getting the info about the ratings dropping....i keep hearing it...and i do believe they have dropped since the 1st season, but not one is able to show proof of where they have seen the ratings at first hand.  i searched everywhere on the internet and i couldnt find any ratings for this season....

on other thing...i am really tired of people complaining about no carmen no dana...yea its upsetting to me but they arent gonna write exactly what we want...it would be to predictable the draw of the show is not knowing what is gonna happen next.  i love the show and will follow whatever path they lead us down...
