Yeah- it's VERY hard trying just to get things read- there's sooo much competition now in the computer age- EVERYBODY writes now.
I got a degree in Journalism back in the '70's and we didn'yt even have computers then- I wanted to get into film production, and then video- and did a few little things for little money that were barely related to the field-
When I got older, I wrote several books, that I couldn't even get read or find agents for, and now this script- with the same results. There are contests, but they are expensive and the competition is numerous there too
Musics more enjoyable- I got tired of messing with all that film and video hardware as I got older
child of vision
Here I am about 1956- Dad worked for RCA so we had that TV- it had a little turntable that plugged into it and played records through the speakers
Okay, I bought a Yamaha Pacifica and I...uh....don't know how to turn it on. I think this is very forboding of things to come...I should have stuck to accoustic...no..I should have stuck to Guitar Hero....no, actually I should have stuck to listening to my MP3 player.
So, yeah. I plugged in my guitar to my amp and I turned a bunch of knobs and nothing happened. I even read the instruction manual for the amp and that didn't help me any. So, what do I do? And yes, my amp was plugged in...I think.
Poet-The guitar in the top center, is that a Yamaha classical accoustic? It looks a lot like the guitar I had when I was younger.
It's a Takamine classical I bought used for half the price- the strings had never been changed and had not the slightest wear- It's not an expensive one, but it sure plays well-
I've sold the steel string acoustic on the left- and I see there's some commercial on TV with some guy playing a Blue speckled flake Fender Stratacousitic like the one I have
I don't know what to telll you about the amp- but hope you get it working. It might be a bad connection on the cord, or not making good contact at the sockets. Make sure it's pushed in- mine does that sometimes.
I got a little battery powered plastic thing last summer- not much bigger than a transistor radio and it runs on one of those little square 9 volt batteries, or an AC adapter- only about 30 dollars, and really pumps out some decent sound
Any luck getting your amp to work Code?, I can't say I know whats going on with it either...
poet haute your amp sounds pretty cool... my electric acoustic has a little built in pre amp type thingy but can also be plugged into an exturnal amp... I have a little Ashton (which I have named Asha, I'm a dag and name all my instruments) Amp its not too bad... we also have a small Gorilla amp floating around the house and dad's base amp...

Wouldn't it be cool to have online bands? Gee you could have a whole symphony, and record different parts all over the world, and mix it all down somewhere- It;s all digital- burn it all to disk- be f-in GREAT!
Hey Kristjan- you're an Aussie huh? So's me Mum, who turns 88 this month- from Bundaberg Queensland- My parents met there in the war where she drove troop buses-
I lived in Hervey Bay which is only a few hours drive from Bundy for the last four years before moving back here to Nowra... I've been to and threw Bundy a few times, nice place, make good Rum and Ginger Beer there....
I think an online band would be tops, but unfortunately I'm not that skilled with the whole recording process....
I've just finished giving my cousin a guitar lesson, its a slow process as he's not really musical, basically I'm teaching him simple riffs, today we actually found one he liked and was pretty good at for a first timer... Paint it Black by the Rolling Stones... maybe it will make him want to learn more... He's a little bit of a nerd and knows way more than any 13 year old should about wars, ships and guns... at least he's gotten over his Titanic, Dinosaurs and Sharks phase (although I love sharks and could talk to him for hours about them)... He plays on an Ashton Beginners guitar and it has seen a rough time in the 2 months I have been teaching him, he use to whack the crap out of it when he strummed... he's getting better...
Always fighting against the current, the salmon has long been a symbol of determination. (Tattoo Johnnie. com)
Has he seen "School of Rock" with Jack Black? It's a good inspirational flik for someone his age. There's a great scene where substitute teacher Black gets a classroom of younger kids jamming. It's a good movie otherwise too
"Mr. Holland's Opus" is probably a little more dated and for older kids, but also an excellent musical film.
I'm really jazzed these days about music intstruction books that come with CD's , so you can hear what the songs your'e learning should sound like- It's a big help.
A lot of people think you need others to jam with- when a radio and CDs can be just fine to play along with-
Also there are some "jam along" devices from Tascam and the like- that mix your guitar with the CD, and can slow the CD down to jam with easier.
I hope he sticks with it- it's a rewarding and satisfying experience once you start getting "over the hump" of just begining.
And why can't we have both? lol I wouldn't mind a Fender Standard Stratocaster (Midnight Wine with Maple Fretboard) But at the same time I wouldn't turn down a Gibson Acoustic CF-100 E Acoustic-Electric
It all depends on what you want to play - different sounds for different music
And it would be mean to leave out Dean, Ibanez, and Martin - would love some more of them :)
Yeah- well Gibsons have the reputation, and such a high price tag- I don't have any experience with them to know if they merit it- but I've always wanted one of those Humingbird things- I may eventuallly get the cheaper Epiphone version-
I had a standard strat and sold it- I was moving around a lot and didn't like hauling the amp- and I now have a $99 Squire (it's a separate company now I think) that frankly I think is just as good-
and I had a Fender steel string acoustic that I sold- I don't reallly like the curved fingerboard that much- but it was a good value otherwise and really nice
I'm still playing mostly Classical, because I can really play longer with the nylon strings and I do a lot of sight-readiing fingerstyle, and I have arthritis and there is just a little bit more space between the strings and the wider fingerboard than steel acoustic or electric- and I don't need an amp
So, for the money- and I'm giving advice mostly to those who may be beginning- I don't think you can EVER really go wrong with ANY Yamaha product- their entry-level classical and steel string acoustics are always a really solid student guitar that you may never want to replace even if you get proficient otherwise- they start at really competitive prices and don't make a bad guitar- The same with all the instruments that Yahmaha makes, and they make practically every kind,
Their keyboards are great too, at competitive prices- but I still prefer the Casio there (which a lot of pros might still scoff at) But I can multitrack 6 voices seperately on the keyboard alone- my god you can practically record a movie score with one!) and for relatively little money compared to the real pro ones
The Takamine is really good too- a lot of guitar reputation got built up and tied to high prices- but it's almost a different era now- there's a FLOOD of guitars on the market, and contrary to what a lot of people still think- you can get a really nice playable guitar these days for not a lot of money
I've got an old yamaha 6 string. lol. Its way older than me though. But I love it. I've also got a first act electric. It was my first guitar. got it when i was 16 for my b-day. I love it. but if i were to have any guitar i think it would be, a Takamine EG540C Bright Blue Acoustic Electric. lol. And though I don't own one I would love to learn how to play a bass. Fell in love once... it was a black ibenez. One of my exes friends wanted to play with me. we switched so i got to have it for a while but then after about a week we switched back. ^_^ It was great! gotta love a good bass.
Are you confident with barre chords yet? That would be the most difficult aspect of the song; otherwise, you're just moving the same formation up and down the fretboard (for the most part).
True happiness, we are told, consists in getting out of one's self, but the point is not only to get out, you must stay out; and to stay out you must have some absorbing errand. -Henry James
Well i used to have a Fender Strat but i sold it to go on holiday(stupid), but i think i'd quite like a a gibson now. Currently i have yamaha acoustic and an electric guitar that is so rubbish i cant remember the make!
...I hardly play it.. I bought it back when I was 17, after listening to one of Staind's songs "Outside" the live version just touched me.. as I going through some troubles..I haven't touched the guitar ever since.. I wanna learn but I dunno if my hearing is good enough to teach myself the chords.. I only know a few chords.
First guitar was a fender squire bulletstrat (yes, budget I know).
Second guitar was a martinez elec/acoustic.
Third was a strat I built myself from parts (thank god for ebay) - It's pink and black checkered, and I have another half-made Van Halen-style black and silver striped one that I hope to finish soon. They all have different pickup configurations and stuff though, so they're really each quite different.
Although that may make me seem somewhat attracted to fenders, I am craving a Gibson Les Paul and a Maton acoustic.
Although with amps, I couldn't go past a vintage fender tweed if I had the money.
all i have to say is put a girl and a guitar together and shes automaticly hot, even if she sucks... am i the only one who thinks that or is it like a collective thing?
my girlfriend got me a bass for xmas (!!!!!!) because otherwise i'd never save up enough to buy one myself. i don't have the discipline. i kinda suck at it but i wanna get really good.
So I just joined, and I LOVE music, so I thought I'd poke this thread and see if anyone comes back to it!
I think I'm in the minority in that I play acoustic and not electric. I play/sing, and though I'd love to try out the electric side, the play styles seem so different, and not about accompanying a voice (mine isn't as strong as it could be, I'm sure) so I don't know how that would work out. But if anyone has suggestions, that'd be cool!
I also love doing recording -- right now I use the free software Audacity for doing multiple tracks, harmonies, doing keyboard as well as guitar, etc. but I know there have to be better programs out there. Lately it's been recording and playing back at different speeds, so if I record the guitar track and then play it back to myself to record the vocal track, the end result is that the guitar and vocal tracks don't match up speed-wise. Anyway, if anyone has advice for hardware and software for amateur recording, let me know! :)
I can't play guitar but i try to learn. most guitars are so beautiful. I espcially like the Gibson models. I have a Flying V copy and an Epiphone Strat
That's my Flying V. I replaced the pickguard, the truss rod cover and the input jack plate with new ones which i made of aluminium. I hand-engraved all of these parts
Okay, so I'm not a guitarist, I'm a bassist (electric and double bass)... Am I even allowed here? No matter. That is an absolutely stunning job you've done on those plates. You're incredibly talented. I'd like something like that done to one of my instruments some day.
I LOVED my taylor 410ce, but i'm tiny and the body was a little big and I hardly ever play anymore, so i sold it :(. my first guitar was an acoustic takamine and I still have that one :) I would LOVE another taylor, but I'm thinkin about trying a martin? any thoughts on that?
rite im bored once again and thought id yap on about how great my guitar is. its a cheap one but the best iv ever had its a gibson sg vintage (black) think it might be on a pic on me profile. n iv brought an amazin pedal ml2 metalcore boss and i think im in love.
so thought id open a thread to anyone else that wants to ramble on about guitars or ought else related to it.
i lovvvve my guitars...i'm risking getting kicked out of uni housing just to have my electric with me...
gibson, always. unbelievable sound, the tone's so warm and bright and shivery-sweet. but that's nowhere close to affordable right now, so i have a couple washburns (acoustic and electric) to hold me over. i do have a fender standard jazz though and i definitely can't complain about it.
--
let's just pretend i said something constructive and intelligent.
hmmm... well between gibson and fender id have to go with fender just because John 5 plays fender and John 5 is one of my favorite artists. but my dream guitar is a ESP SC607B 7 string.
my favorite guitar resource sites are ultimate guitar and musiciansfriend.com
my setup right now is a Washburn X27 7string electric guitar, a Behringer Strat electric (my 1st electric i got when i was like 12ish), and a Johnson acoustic. i currently play through a Line 6 Spider III amp (only a 15w but i want a bigger amp soon) and i am a bit of a effects junkie so i own a Dunlop wah, Coffin Case BDFX1 Blood Drive Distortion pedal and the Zoom signature John 5 effects pedal :D yay! i had a shitty fender chorus pedal but im going to sell it because its really not that good ive used it twice.
My guitars make me so happy. I have only been playing a short while ,and I am sporting a MIM Fender Tele right now. I love it so much, and I believe it is a great beginner guitar. Also, I have an Alvarez acoustic. My most recent purchase is a 50 watt Vox wanna be tube amp. Eee I love guitars.
My two dream guitars are a Gibson SG and a Fender Mustang. I'm going to be saving up for a LONG time. Any Mustang players out there? I love the way they sound, but personal opinions are always great.
i'm in love with my new guitar. i got some great advice and words of support to help me with learning how to play from my first post that the moderator put the breaks on, but i could def use more advice. i'm glad she did because i found outer guitar lovers here.. ;)
i bought an acustic guitar, yamaha...she's beautiful. i have to name her!! what should i name my guitar?
you should give her an exotic name Benny! like.... Antigone or Penelope LaRue. or maybe something really cute like Billie, Bettie, Dotty, or Dorothy :)
I have a classical Yamaha guitar. Its a Yamaha C40 and it was really cheap and it plays really well and keeps pretty good tune. I named mine Eduardo because I play a lot of Spanish-type music.
The one's on your floor? They do dig it! I've heard good things about your playing skills from a bunch of them. Some day we'll have to get together and jam, but that day will have to be after I've changed my strings....
I bought my guitar a Fender Eric Clapton "Blackie" stratocaster from a friend. It wasn't cheap though, I named her Brena after one of my favourite APC songs. I also have a couple of acoustic guitars.
That's not a bad idea! How about "Jungle Jollies"?
GIBSON = love the big heavy sound as opposed to the more "bright" Fender sound.
I got my gold top Les Paul in the '90's & payed only $400 for it. Now they sell on e-bay for like $2500 and they don't make them new anymore, don't think......
my dream guitar. its an ESP SC607B baritone 7string guitar :D i love it. this is the guitar the guys of Lacuna Coil use and my buddy Donnie from Charlie Drown has one too. its an AMAZING instrument!
I have a fendeer...but sadly, cannot play it.....too bad....but i wanna learn...actually, been wantin to learn for 5 years ahaha, o well.....another thing added to my incomplete list. BUT...i have figured out how to record on my laptop with my guitar...now only if i could play
***the key part is that i did it without spending a dime, and its a direct line in
How the french toast do you sing and play the guitar at the same time. Granted i haven't had my guitar for a long time but still i finally got my fingers strong enough to play different cords, but now i'm trying to sing a song and play and i can't do them together. lol i really should get professional lessons
Unfortunately, it just takes time and practice. ;)
Even though I've been playing for years, if I'm learning a new song, I have to learn it in bits - and either the vocals or the guitar part first, then learn the other next, then put them together.
Schecter Diamond Series with double duncan pickups...As for my more acoustic strings I play a violin and a Black Yamaha acoustic guitar... they're ok but I'd like something better in the future
Different guitars for different moods and styles. If I'm playing jazz, I'll use my Les Paul (I'd love to get a semi-hollowbody someday for jazz!)... and for rock, it just depends on the song.
The one I play the most right now is the Fender Strat, since it's newer and I have to get used to it.
As for strings, I use Dean Markley 10's for both electrics, and John Pearse 12's or 13's for the acoustics.
I bought an alvarez ad60s about two weeks ago to try and teach myself to play. I also have an Ibanez daytripper (3/4 guit). The alvarez has a nice bright sound, but it is HUGE lol and I am a tiny person.
I also have some crappy first act electric guitar that I got like 6 years ago that I've never actually played. It'sjust pretty to look at =)
I know...

I got a degree in Journalism back in the '70's and we didn'yt even have computers then- I wanted to get into film production, and then video- and did a few little things for little money that were barely related to the field-

I have a classical Yamaha guitar. Its a Yamaha C40 and it was really cheap and it plays really well and keeps pretty good tune. I named mine Eduardo because I play a lot of Spanish-type music.

Miss Poopchute is my guitar and she's a
GIBSON = love the big heavy sound as opposed to the more "bright" Fender sound.
I got my gold top Les Paul in the '90's & payed only $400 for it. Now they sell on e-bay for like $2500 and they don't make them new anymore, don't think......

But if I'm having to choose, i'd go for Fender.

Unfortunately, it just takes time and practice. ;)
Even though I've been playing for years, if I'm learning a new song, I have to learn it in bits - and either the vocals or the guitar part first, then learn the other next, then put them together.

Alvarez * Ibanez
I bought an alvarez ad60s about two weeks ago to try and teach myself to play. I also have an Ibanez daytripper (3/4 guit). The alvarez has a nice bright sound, but it is HUGE lol and I am a tiny person.
I also have some crappy first act electric guitar that I got like 6 years ago that I've never actually played. It'sjust pretty to look at =)
