Where are all the aussies gone?

Hey all AfterEllerners,

I know this is an american site, but I'm sure there must be some more australians out there, soaking up the atmosphere.

So if you ride a kangaroo to work, and all speak and act like paul hogan, raise your voice! Just joking, no australian rides a kangaroo to work, they live in the bush, the zoo, and in some natural parks. not in peoples backyards. Also, practically no one, especially people from the city, speak like paul hogan (crocidile dundee). Sorry to burst those bubbles....

That was pritty much it, if you're from downunder, shout it out!

Btw, I'm Jess, I'm 18 and from the beautiful city of melbourne (currently!)

Peace
Jess (Zimmo)

...we dont ride kangaroos to work?!?! tell that to the one i've got tied up out front...
Al's picture

Unfortunately...

I went OS and didn't hear another Aussie for a while, and when I did hear one again, it turns out we do sound like Crocodile Dundee. It made me laugh, which confused the girl who was trying to have a serious conversation with me.

totally, when i was over

totally, when i was over seas i thought the aussies i met sounded like cartoon characters... ha ha. And there are wads of kangaroos in peoples back yards you just have to get out of the city...

well, I don't know where all the aussies have gone and I'm not australian but I am a big fan and think there should be more of ya'll on here. :)

also.. I'm from texas and just substitute horse for kangaroo and matthew mcconaughey/ george bush (ick) for paul hogan and I'm in the same boat as you.

Kangaroos

I don't know about you, but I once saw one hopping down my street. Alright, Canberra is full of reserves, but I'm sure the closest one is at least 5 k's away! It was one of those slightly surreal moments. There was also the time me and about 5 friends walked into a valley while hiking and disturbed around 200 sleeping kangaroos. Never have I been more unnerved in my life!

There are actually a fair number of Aussies on the site, and more than a few Aussie threads around. You just have to find them :)

hypothesis's picture

Same here

I'm currently maintaining health but Canberra is freezing. Is there something about the cold settling in after Anzac day? It was about a 10 degree max today! It's also been raining (like yesterday during our football game... I've never shivered that much ever!) which it hardly ever does... cos we're in a drought and all.
myles's picture

melburnian here!

Yea. Weather's been pretty horrible. Been shivering all day.

Brrrrrrrr.

'Screw the rules. I have money. Bwahahahaha!'

Phoebe's picture

WOOT Melbourne!

So have I! My toes have been numb all day because of the severe lack of heating at my school!

*sigh* At least it's better than the 46 degree day in January.

I agree. It's a lot better

I agree. It's a lot better than the horrible scorching summer we've had. Unlike winter, we can't exactly tear our skins off if it gets too hot or too stuffy. Hehe.

Chemistry! Oh, thank you. :) Chem's fun. :D Speaking of which, we just had a diagnostics test in Chem today. -_-

Love organic chem, though! :D Not the eeky analytical bits :|

'Screw the rules. I have money. Bwahahahaha!'

Chem!

Ohh, I'm sure you aced it!

Organic chem is my favourite! I love the functional groups. Especially carboxylic acid, it looks so cool!

I also quite like Infrared Spectroscopy, which is kind of related. Would that be an icky analytical bit though? Hmm.

I think yesterday was the coldest day recorded in melbourne (maybe for april) in decades! I think it was the wind, because to day was pritty cold as well, but it wasn't as sharp, then again, I didn't get stuck for 20mins waiting for a train after work today!

So for everyone other thus us victorians, how did you all celebrate the public holiday?

Hope everyone else had a good weekend.

sydney

Hahah...this is the ultimate....a bunch of lesbians find eachother on the net and all we can talk about is the weather. But I do have something to add....Sydney got cold on Sunday. Before Sunday it was Summer, after sunday it's been winter. Impossible, but true. I got burnt 2 weeks ago and now i'm in trackies, my grandma's old woollen jumper and a hoodie. oh and the customary old ugg boots (and yes, of course I am at home). i live with the heating nazi..who is also the light switch nazi, clean nazi and door-locking nazi. or perhaps that is entirely normal and i am just irresponsible.

Sydney Winter = Michigan Heatwave

I think its interesting how people here get really excited when our winter starts to look anything like a winter in Sydney! The ice, snow, and face freezing winds just aren't much fun.

I'll be missing the majority of our warmer days this year, but I don't care much because I'm pretty excited about staying in Sydney for a few months. :)

Trains and trams

I still have a thing for trains, I love them. Maybe because we don't have them in canberra.

I haven't been on a tram since I was 11, but I'm probably moving to melbourne next year so I guess I should get used to them when I visit. I think I like trains and trams simply because the bus is shit...
