"Lesbian" MusicMy girl friend of 10 months and I always have this debate over "Lesbian" Music and I wanted to throw it out there. First things First-she hates my music choices-HATES them. I lived through day-glo, side pony tails and Ray Bans the first time, a true 80's girl, but my heart always lies in the music of the 90's. I love me some DMB and BNL-which I definitely wouldn't throw under the Lesbian Music category- I would, however, put the following artists under the category.... Tori, Sarah, Indigo Girls, Tracy Chapman are tops on my list. The artists I love now are as follows-Ingrid Michaelson, Sia, Tegan and Sara, and the likes. Today or yesterday, I love female singer/song writers. She does not. Her musical tastes lie along the lines of Journey, Heart, Dolly Parton, and Johnny Cash. Whenever I turn on my "Whiny girl music" as she refers to it, she cringes and says that it reminds her of her first lesbian love affairs back in college. So the question is-is there such a thing as "Lesbian Music" and if so what do you think it is? or if not-Who are your favorite feel good "go to" artists? I'm with you on the
"Lesbian" Music
I always thought that if it just pertained to the female singer - songwriters that is was a way of putting down what they were saying. It may be because they are actually gay themselves and that's who just comes to their shows and who buys the albums....in my opinion. My musical tastes are pretty diverse. I like Led Zeppelin, Aerosmith, Bruce Springsteen - usually classic rock. But I also like Ani DiFranco (have most of her albums and seen her twice in concert), Indigo Girls (have almost all of their albums as well), most of the women you mentioned. In my case, I just like the music I like. I don't really see it in terms of "lesbian music" or not. Like I said, I see it as more of a way to dismiss or put down the music or the artist in general.
hmmm
I see your point. I don't think she's saying it in a negative way-I mean, she's gay heself :) She does love Classic Rock though, too, and sort of turns up her nose at the music that I enjoy.

I love some of the artists on both your lists.
I love Tegan and Sara and Indigo Girls. Whiny? T&S... sometimes, I still love them. Journey's great too. I guess I don't really classify music as gay or straight. Mostly I obsess over it being in alphabetical order. If the artist who sings it is a lesbian or the song happens to have a lesbian theme then that gets brownie points but overall it just needs a good beat and some interesting lyrics for it to win a spot on my playlist. What I listen to just tends to depend on my mood... or the weather.
The only music I guess I could qualify as "lesbian music" is any song that gets me thinking about that girl who has me eating out of the palm of her hand.
i personally say there's no
i personally say there's no such thing as lesbian music. and when people say "i listen to lesbian music", they just mean that artist is probably a lesbian. which is ridiculous. listen to music b.c you like it. there are enough labels and categories in society nowadays...we don't need anymore when it comes to music. now i understand that if you are a lesbian and you are listening to a lesbian artist it can be more relatable, however at the same time we're all the same (and that doesn't make it lesbian music).
you stay. i'll stay. we'll be alone.
RIGHT!?
I agree...I mean, I love "girl" music (singer/song writers) but I also love old school R&B as well

gay/lesbian music...
I'd say there's no such thing as lesbian music as a genre. In that case it's probably the artist being lesbian or for some reason it got the gay or lesbian status. I mean, isn't that also true for the typical 'gay' songs?
I listen to what I like. If there's something totally gay/lesbian in my playlist, so be it, like jc said, it's indeed just one of those labels again.
[dramavoice] Even with music it is the inside that counts! Quit being so shallow! [/dramavoice] lol oh well, you get my point
Get a taste of religion. Lick a witch!
Personally...
I love all of those artists! Dolly Parton is my rock, but honestly she's more of a whiny girl than Tracy Chapman in terms of voice. As for whiny lyrics, Johnny Cash is the king. I mean, if any of them are "whiny", which I don't think they are.
I think really "lesbian" music doesn't exist. If so, what, like Chris Pureka or K's Choice? When I'm feeling especially gay I listen to T&S or UHH. Comforting, with just enough queer seasoning to make it seem like it was written for you.

I see can see what someone
I see can see what someone means when they're talking about lesbian music. For example; I never really liked tegan and sara.. or at least, i didn't want to listen to them because all the stereotypical lesbian girls listen to tegan and sara. My interest in them was pretty much gone because I thought most girls just like them because they're gay and I didn't want to be that shallow. I know loads of girls who just listen to anything with a lesbian bandmember or musician or who will watch anything with a lesbian actress, host or guest. But I found out that's not really it. We're just interested in homosexuality as a subject when it comes to television and we like cute or hot musicians who make good music. So now I've actually become one of them. Now I love listening to (still the example) tegan and sara because of the music (I'm a huge Chris Walla fan, so I had to listen to it eventually) and my view on 'lesbian music' has changed. But I can still imagine that someone might see this as 'just' lesbian music and that might be a reason to or not to listen to it.
complicated, I hope you understand my story even if I don't really myself, sometimes it's hard to fond the right words in english...

Tegan and Sara
I, too, refused to listen to them for the same reason! And now I love them. It does help that they're not bad on the eyes and I think it's even more exciting knowing that they are gay. Even though I love my GF (even though she hates my musical tastes) and I know there's no chance that Tegan or Sara would date me...there's always that chance that they'll be at the Caddyshack in Brooklyn wasted and my GF says it's alright. I buy them a drink, they take it, we chat about writing and then we make out...I mean, it could happen, right?

haha XD sure! anything is
haha XD sure! anything is possible. I surely wouldn't mind that happening to me.. :)

"Lesbian"music
I listen to gay artists, but I listen to a lot of music. I don't listen to their music because they're gay. Although I probably wouldn't have found some artists if they weren't gay.
But yeah, I listen to Tegan & Sara, Ani DiFranco, Sia, God-Des and She, Ruthie Foster, Kaki King, Mirah and Missy Higgins. And I'm probably forgetting about a lot of lesbian musicians right now.
You mentioned Ingrid Michaelson, I love her music. I've seen her in concert once and got tickets to another gig already. But is she gay? I couldn't find the answer anywhere on the internet.
Missy Higgins!
I forgot about her! I love her, too. I'm not sure if Ingrid Michaelson is gay, my gf lumps her into the whole "whiny girl music" she distains so much. Strange thing, I never ever got into Ani DiFranco at all...

whiny
A lot of people find her music whiny. When I was at that concert she was opening for someone else and there were a couple of girls complaining about her so loud I had to pick a different seat in order to hear her. That was all made up for once I got to meet her, she's a really nice person. I'm going to see her perform again next month. I wouldn't dare ask her if she's gay, even though I'm curious whether she is or not.
I actually got into Ani before I knew she was bi. It wasn't until I heard "two little girls" that I found out.
At least Missy Higgins is bi, so you have an excuse why you forgot to mention her when discussing "lesbian" music ;)
Of course there's "Lesbian"
There is no such thing as "Lesbian"music
Music is music to me. The person maybe a lesbian who writes or sings or performs the music but why does it have to be "Lesbian" music? I support the family and the family supports me as well but I just can not call what I do "Lesbian" music.

I know that music is music
....
I like all kinds of music as well. I don't get why does music that lesbians make have to be apart of the cheesy cliche homo genre? I am not saying conforming to what mainstream wants them to be. But if I hear another I screw your girl track I will scream.
I love the Strokes by the way they are one of my fave : )
