Hi from DubaiHey everyone, Just a quickie introduction - I'm a 23 year old expat Brit living in Dubai with my girlfriend. Living in a middle eastern country where the gay scene is absolutely non-existant (as well as illegal!) means that I'm starved of any gay social scene what-so-ever so therefore spend far too much time reading AfterEllen and watching The L Word! (but then I probably did that when in lived in the UK too heh) It would be great to hear from anyone who lives in Dubai just to prove that there are more than 2 lesbians out here! nice to meet you all, Kat Submitted by my velouria (17 posts) on February 5, 2007 - 12:24pm. |

Hello Velouria
Nice to meet you. I must ask what brought you Dubai?
~~~~
At least you have Star Trek Here, even if Kirk and Spock are played by Peter Falk and Donald Sutherland.
Basically, it was a choice
Basically, it was a choice of staying in miserable old Britain or live in the sun, by the beach for a few years. My girlfriend grew up here so it was an easy move and I was sick and tired of the UK.
There are some huge drawbacks of being here, it's a dictatorship for a start and the censorship is so frustrating but I think it's good to live in different parts of the world. It's certainly made me appreciate some of the freedoms that were taken for granted in the UK. Walking down a street holding hands with my girlfriend at worst would have caused a raised eyebrow or some snide remark but out here that can get you thrown in jail! It's kind of scary but Dubai really isn't as oppresive as most Middle Eastern countries and is quite Westernised in lots of ways.
Cool
Do you plan to stay there long? Do you work there? Can you work in your chosen field? Sorry just curious, it seems so exciting .
If you'd like the latest Lake Wobegon monologue collection entitled Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Lutherans, press one.
hmmm..
Not sure how long we'll be out here, we've only been here for 8 months and will probably stay for atleast another 6ish.
It's quite easy to get work out here as long as you have a degree and are happy to work in an office. The population of Dubai is something like 70% expats, and the city is booming right now so there's lots of job opportunities. I work in an office which I hate but I'm studying to become a film archivist so it's bearable for now and the great thing about Dubai is that everything is tax free!
I probably won't be able to work in my chosen field but I'll have to go back to the UK to complete my qualifications and then move on to somewhere else in the world!
Hmm
At least you will be able to save money and maybe you will work in some great places.
So what is theer to do for fun? Besides being on the beach ?
Dubai , sounds a bit like where I am now, in Lovely Grande Prairie. No beach howvever. They do say have a lake, but I have not been there. But it is also in a boom and people are crazy looking for staff.
It is shame really there are so many trade peopel here, but no no servers so many peopel have money but no one can go anywhere late at night.
hi kat, welcome!
Dubai
Hey Kat!
You know living in a middle eastern country could be tought alright!. I guess Dubai is somehow tolerable next to KSA for example or even Iran...people get capital punishment over there if they get caught by the authorities.They relate everything to religion..I believe Lebanon is somehow concidered a better middle eastern country than any other..well it is true there is a 6 month to 1 year prison in case you get caught in an illegal situation but still many tourists come to Lebanon..
Best of luck !:)
Hey from Dubai
from dubai, live in us
Dubai
I lived in and around Dubai for 8 years. I loved it. There was plenty to do, and after a little reserach plenty of like minded women - if you get my drift. All it took was a little bit of time and trust - and there was a scene to be found!
Good Luck
hi
Really thats Great!
Really then how can I find those like minded women you talk about? Where I live everyone speaks Arabic so i cant communicate wit that many people. Plus Im so not the type to go to Dubai and stuff on my own I hate going out alone it seems so sad to me. So how do u ladies suggest I find some chicks like me?
:-)
Looking to make new friends in Dubai. Recently moved back from Toronto. Drop me a line standingstill2@hotmail.com and we can chat.
Take care.
hi
have a friend there too (im a filipina btw)
almost a yr & a half in dubai
hi velouria. i haven't been here that long but i have seen a lot of women with the same preference as ours. in fact, one of my colleagues has a live-in gf with her. and i recently met some people in a neighboring villa and there were 2 couples there. i think if you keep your eyes really really open you'd notice the growing number of women like us.
with regard to a place to meet single ones tho, i'm afraid i can't help you. my partner and i are through with party scenes. besides, it's a bit scary here in this country to be too noticeable. most of the time it's just me and my partner enjoying the city by ourselves.
but i wish you luck in finding what or who you are looking for.
Hey there
Hey there,
Moved to Dubai just 6 wks ago and will only be here until April. I'm from Ireland originally but came here to study. The lack of scene is killing me.... I was expecting it to be hard but not this hard! I've met quite alot of gay men but nooooo women! The biggest problem is that nobody knows where all the girls are hiding :) I'm sure there has to be some sort of meeting place, so if anyone knows please speak up. Very strange place, can't decide how I feel about it..... if there was a scene I'd love it!
wow!
I haven't logged on to the site for a few weeks and now there's about 5 new lesbians in Dubai!! Iagree with one of the above comments, there seems to be an abundance of gay men here who all seem very open, but not so many women although my gaydar leaves alot to be desired so for all I know I could be working in an office with 5 lesbians and I wouldn't realise! A friend of mine organises a sort of LGB meet up group every few weeks, so far it's just been my gf and I and loads of guys so would be great if we could even out the numbers a bit..
"Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups"
just as suprised
I think you've started a small revolution in dubai - which is awesome - i have been living in dubai for about 6 or 7 months now - but I had no idea how many fellow lesbians are out there or moving here! I'd be interested in meeting up with like minded people, feel free to drop me a line when the next one is on!
Hi
working in dubai for 2 weeks
GREAT to see that there are a lot of like minded girls living in Dubai. I was there before last year and could not find any place with girls like us. Their nightlife is nice though. Plenty of things to do and shopping as well.
It certainly would be great if we could all meet up and go for a drink, coffee, chatting, dancing...watever rocks ur boat! When is the GLB meeting? Where?
Will be in Dubai sometime next month! Cant wait since now I am not 'alone in the dark' :)
DxB Les MeetUps?!
Hi guys,
Wondering if anyone would be interested in having a meet up. With so many like minded women I am trying to put together a meet up group, we would meet at least once a month and do something fun!!
Let me know if anyone would be interested. Email me directly at standingstill2@hotmail.com
Cheers.
i am interested
BE MY GUESTS
Well, A 26yrs old from a city close to Dubai, called "Al-Ain." I was searching the web and saw your intersting posts, so I decided to be helpful. I am a UAE citizen and for sure speakes arabic. I was thinking that if anyone of you male or female needed someone to show you around or for at least friendship do not hasitate to send me an e-mail lovzevil@hotmail.com
There is a reason why I like to welcome people from the west, it is because they treated me good when I was there once. I was in United state for 4 years to study and loved how they liked me in spite of my race "Arab" and religon
Bye for Now
wow!
oh my gawd! Canadians! lesbian friendly! in dubai!
i think this thread just made my quiet friday morning.. nice to see/meet all of you guys out here... ive been in dubai for a year and a half now- originally from toronto and montreal Canada, and must say im bored of the fact that i cant um 'explore' too freely...
The idea of a meet up would be great... its always nice to hang with like minded people :)
the scene in dubai
GAYGRRRL IN DUBAI:::...the must be thousands
well judging by the blocked hi5.com and flickr.com sites in the UAE due to the GAY DATING that has come out of it... i would say there are many of us.
i have discovered a sort of underground gaygirls and boys house party scene. But sadly these young gays and bisexuals are being paid by rich LOCALS to make a sort of revolving club scene..which is not very deep. Revolving as in, it goes from different villas at different times, and there is always security on the doors. Interesting !!!
But for the gaygrrrl scene is sux big time. There are many lez Asia grls from India etc..
but try finding a good balance in one place..lol. And sometimes I feel like it is dangerous if I come out to the WRONG grll. And what if she isnt gay..and what if she tells someone etc...
AAAAAAAAAAGHHHHHHHH....we need something...a gay desert party !!! no guys..too many locals are gay males. LOL..
there are... :-)
thousands that is...crazy part is, alot of them are local women too...
thats why alot of the womens days at the beaches were stopped...
Party!!
a meet up would be fab! We'll definately have to organise something, a party in the desert would be amazing! I can't believe they're closing down on the only sort-of kinda gay place in Dubai, IBO, to make way for the bloody monorail thingy they're building, no more Twisted Melons! sigh
I actually came out to alot of people at work a couple of weeks ago to a resounding..'so what?' so seems this place can be liberal at times..
"Never under estimate the power of stupid people in large groups"
the numbers of grrlzzz in the uae
wow..u know i haven´t made it to the GRLS only DAZE at Jumeria and i hear there is one in Abu Dhabi or was one.
really they stopped it cause of girl - girl......mmmm
oh they just stopped it to let more hairy men ooogle us..yeck..that is so gross.
when i am swimming they always start lingering toward me and makes me sick.
anyway..what about WILDWADI ladies night, think it is Mondays. In the Summer or even soon...it will be a blessing to get WET at night with all ladies... how freaking subversive would that be.
Wild Wadi Lesbian rendezvous. Could give the word WADI a whole different meaning.
I mean, what a wadi wash sister ...lol.
Ya desert party...well, long term i am trying to set up parties etc..but it will take several months and will be chill...been to some and they are cooool.
local ladies..are not easy to access...and won´t come to my apartment lol....
another thought
well there is ONE good thing about living in the UAE...and that is
it is completely NORMAL to hold another girl arm in arm...lol.
since all the dudes are holding HANDS !!! and i have seen more than a bit of hand holding with dudes dressed like ladies in viels and the guys vying for the other dude. they say that is culture. i say it is 100percent gay.
anyway..so that is a GOOD point about living in the GULF women can lovingly crusie Emirates Mall arm in arm...sans any backlash.
oh does anyone know how to get access to blocked sites = like a proxy server or something...i want to see all my friends back on hi5.com and flickr.com in the UAE.
Forget the censorship...it is a lie lie lie..with all the open prostitutes that circulate in EVERY EVERY hotel, including the most prestigious, saying that blocking Lesbians is to perserve culture is a JOKE and a big fat LIE.
It is cause guys can´t handle the fact that A LOT of grls aren´t into them anymore..or
for some ever were. That is what it comes down to. Did anyone read the article last year in the Khaleej times about Sharjah University concern for girls with short hair and lesbianism !!!!! hahahahaha..what about all the gaymen...shit..what a bunch of witchhunters.
FINALLY
Visiting Dubai
Hi Girls,
I'll be passing through dubai in a few days and I'm wondering what to do "between the flights". Any suggestions?
I haven't been (t)here before and probably the time is too short (less than 24 hours) to really go in-deep adventuring through the famous city (and presumably also my wallet is too small) but if anybody of you would have an idea, please contact me.
Best,
C.
Local bi in dubai
Thats me. I am a 23 year old local bi living in dubai. Single. I go to a local college filled with local lesbians and bisexuals. It's very easy to spot them. Most of them have boy cut hair and dress up in a masculine fashion. Check out the way their abayas style is...if it looks like the male's "kondora" or "dish dash" you just found a lesbian who likes to act like a boy. The hard type of lesbians or bi-s to find are the ones like myself because we look and act normal. So the only way to tell the difference is to come up to us and ask us. Prepare and beware for a kiss or a slap that might come in your direction.
Anyway...enough about that. Who wants to date me? let's talk on msn messenger. I would love to get to know most of you and maybe who knows .....be your local lovergirl.xxx
Absolutely right!
hi
where the gggrrrls arent
well fireball if we were all students maybe it would be easier..and just kissing someone without speaking to them and getting to know them is not really very cool.
i know that random sexual acts are normal in the GULF region with straights and gays due to the repression, secrecy and fear. As well, there often is opportunity to GET TO KNOW the person you are into ...to see if it is a serious attraction.
that is the problem with the severe repression. i have had some comments directed towards me the other day cause i was wearing TRAINERs, jeans and a tight shirt a little boyish...but with jewellery and makeup lol..and way some security guard followed me and i think was trying to intimidate me....
hii...yea it's true...one
hii...
yea it's true...one positive thing about livin in dubai, is that it's completely normal to hold a girls hand! i lived her all my life - 18yrs....i just moved to shj though - temporarily it's such a relief to know there is more than one lesbian living in uae...lmao.
pm me to chat.
lez in the middle east go to www.hi5.com or hi5-arabia.com
and u will find thousands !!!
problem the govt blocks the English version...the arabic is a new one.
there are some internet providers that can 'get around the blocked sites..and not all GULF states block these sites..just some ...
anyway... have already met someone but it is full of confusion HAHAHAHA...ah..passion
Gay in Dubai
wow there seems to be quite alot of us lez in Dubai, i suggest we arrange to meet and create our own scene, how should we go about this?any suggestions are welcome.
"Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult"
i think thats a good idea,
i think thats a good idea, count me in!!!
the lesbian scene
it's true local lesbians are in abundance these days (especially younger ones) but i spot a lesbian or two everytime i go shopping..and people please! no police are gonna bust you for holding hands! I hold my girl's hand everytime we're out and more so when guys are hunting to make them see that this one is taken..no one can say anything they mostly look embarrassed at worst..
the lesbian scene here is always on the move unfortunately because mostly it consists of wild teenagers who spoil it for the rest of us..Almamzar park was one place, leisure land(the park), wild wadi (still is), sharjah ladies club (in the old days), the skating rink in AD (still is) but as i said it mainly consists of the younger generation..but they can't stop us..it's a force that refuses to hush up :)
and as for spottin a lesbian, i make it real easy..i wear a rainbow ring ^_^
"we are each of us angels with one wing..and we can only fly by embracing each other.."
hi
rainbow
lol like your post
im inspire....next time you see a car with a rainbow hanging from the rearview mirror
you will know its me hahaha....
maybe rainbow bumber stickers are next...a bit obvious eh?
