Re: Homosexual in the media
As an Asian, the media in my region is no less in being opened to homosexual issue.
The movies with homosexual-theme we got here are mostly produced in Hong Kong and (especially) Taiwan. A lot of these movies portray very positive images about the gay and lesbian community.
Besides that, in these recent years, I have seen some revolution in the Hong Kong dramas whereby lesbian characters (and even couples) are often featured as acceptable within the society.
The media here also openly reported girl-to-girl kissing between celebrities, tried to out certain celebrities, etc but without harsh accusation. Issues regarding homosexuality has been discussed in forum or talk shows to understand the people in the community.
I'm not sure on what to say about the media in the west though, especially after reading about what perezhilton (for example) did in his blog.
hi thx 4 your comment. im
hi thx 4 your comment. im asian too.in my country(indonesia),movies about homosexual people starting to pop out. the stories is very insteresting.but do u think is it really describe the real life of gays and lesbians?have u watch the l word (my all time favorite lesbian tv series)?the L word potrays that lesbians is glamorous people, but i dont think that way; homosexual people can't be in a commited relationship (i disagree);and they are a very sexual people, sex is more important than companionship (i disagree more).what about you?what do u think about that?thx!
SE Asia thread under International
well, thanks
Well, thanks msgulp.
Tinkerbell posted a general question. And it was just a coincidence that we were from Asia. Honey, perhaps you can give your point of view from the western perspective.
Re:
Hi there Tinkerbell.
I'm partly agree with you that L Word does not really reflect the community in general. But from where i came from (Malaysia), I came to know a group of professionals whom I actually found somewhat like the characters in L Word; glamourous, beautiful, mostly femmes, etc. And they really love L Word because that is one of the show they can relate to. However, majority of them are in monogomous relationships.
Personally I enjoy watching Saving Face. It is one of the movie that I can relate to. There are also a couple of tv series from Taiwan which I think portrays the community very well. The lifestyle in Taiwan and SIngapore is very much similar to the plu (People Like Us, the term we used here) community in my country.
Btw, I watched Tentang Dia a couple of years ago. At first I thought it was lesbian-theme but coming to the ending, well it's not, isn't it?
hey
hey
Hey Tinkerbell,
Like what msgulp suggested, we can discuss further on any SEA related topics in the international thread.
Well, speaking about books, I have never really read any homosexual-theme books. Not sure if any of those books are available here in my country. Any suggestion?
hey
hi hcfoo,
hmm....i don't mean to sound stupid, but i don't really understand SEA related topics in the international thread,u mean i should post a topic to a different forum in this site?SEA is it south east asian?hahaha....i do sound stupid =D.if i can get a lot of information about this topic,im planning to make my thesis about this.
i've read a novel about lesbian,it's indonesian novel titled 'perempuan semusim'.but i dont really like the ending, coz the main character dumped her girlfriend to be with a guy.she still loves her though.her girlfriend moved to holland n got married there with her new lover.oh and there's a 'detik terakhir' novel too.but i still prefer movies, coz we can actually see the real thing, haha.
