great book. (Dare Truth of Promise) It deals with a lot of issues. I think I've read it...6 times. The Lorax is an awesome children's book. In the Forest of the Night and Demon in My View by Amelia Atwater Rhodes are great. Also I love everybody and other atrocious lies by Laurie Notaro is wonderfully funny, she gives mention to whats her name...oh its early...grrr, everyone loves her...Kate Winslet! Ok Carrie P'ilby, Punk Like Me, girl interrupted, the man who fell to earth, anthem, slaughter house five, Sarah Vowell books (she was a voice in the kids movie the incredibles and is friends with a writter on Buffy so I give her points and she's odd). The man who fell to earth is also a movie w/ David Bowie but I haven't seen it, though the book was beautiful and heartbreaking.
Katherine V. Forrest, in particular the 'Daughters' trilogy. It's a little Sci Fi, it's a little Lesbian Utopia, it's a little action. It's a lotta sex. It's a fantastic read!
Hey I can't believe there is someone else out there who read that trilogy -- i read it in three days and it took her 30 years to write it.
i loved the last book the best...
do you know anything else that quite compares?
do tell
deedum
It's the author's memoirs on growing up in Communist China. She came from a fairly well-to-do family but was forced to live in the meaner quarters of Shanghai during the Cultural Revolution. As a teenager, she was sent to work on a commune in order for her to learn how to be a peasant. There, they are forbidden to have contact with the opposite sex, work in backbreaking conditions with very little food. Dealing with loneliness and dehumanizing conditions, she manages to forge a friendship with her squad leader and eventually escapes the farm.
That's the gist of it I suppose... it's a really good story. Although the author's English isn't magnificent but I hardly noticed.
I just finished reading it and it's fantastic. It's a bunch of short stories that are ordinary yet weird, wonderful and often erotic... or what should be erotic is just mundane. Sometimes poignant, sometimes laugh out loud funny. And there's a lot of queer content in several of the stories. But just... wow. Her movie "Me, You and everyone we know" is similarly odd but wonderful, but I found the book even better than her film. I'm not much of a reader in general, so if I like something, it's usually pretty damn good so check it out :)
of course all books by sarah waters but also try any of the books by american author Gerri Hill, my personal fav. is Hunter's way, but all her books are hard to put down once you have started them
All I have to say is: Sarah Warn liked it! So there. :)
AfterEllen's review shot the book to the number one spot on Amazon the week of September 15th....good times. Thanks to all AFTERELLEN folks who read it.

Author of: Greetings From Jamaica, Wish You Were Queer...
I just finished The River Midnight by Lillian Nattel and really liked it. It's been around for a while (published in 1999). It also has a nice little lesbian character who's story line is well handled.
I recommend anything written by Sherman Alexie, but particularly Reservation Blues and The Toughest Indian in the World (collection of 10 short stories - brilliant!).
I myself just started reading A History of Love, and am loving it so far.
As far lesbiana goes, definitely anything by Jeanette Winterson, particularly Sexing the Cherry and Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit (which should really be a pre-requisite for anyone questioning their sexuality, or coming out). Tipping the Velvet is still my favorite Sarah Waters novel ...
And thus the whirligig of time brings in his revenges....
Anything by Sarah Waters, but i recommend Fingersmith by her. Another recommendation is: Pages For You - though i forget the author - sorry. Someone mentioned Miranda July - i love her work she is amazing!
This is her latest collection of short stories and it took me days to get through it. Not because it is tedious but because it is that good! I savored each word and each story. I had to think about each story as I read it, something that doesn't happen often.
Fancy something a little different, try Rhona Cameron's AutoBio 1979 or her first novel the Naked Drinking Club ... she is a scottish comedian ... i thought it great! She has a bitter sweet quality to her writing that makes you wanna laugh out loud and cry in the same breath.
With you there Sarah Waters fans ... Night Watch is probably her best! Thinking of giving this Gerri person a try but it is not that easy getting her books here in the UK, unless someone knows something i dont - hmmm. Would anyone equate her to Karin Slaughter, love her books?
...enjoy the mindless entertainment found in fiction works by Radclyffe, Ali Vali, etc.? I refuse to believe I'm the only one that escapes in these stories!
I read Radclyffe, Ali Vali, Geri Hill and all the other lesbian fiction authors out there. It is a great way to escape and it only takes a couple days to read each one. I like them a lot actually. They can be very addictive. Have you read anything good lately?
..."The Devil Inside" by Ali Vali. I have the other two on order from Amazon. They should be here this week! I'm really excited about it. I think Cain is a such an awesome character!
I have read all her books (I think she has two or three out) I have liked all the books by Gun Brooke, Gerri Hill, and Jennifer Fulton. If you like fantasy read Jane Fletcher. A very good book is called Madam President by Blayne Cooper (her other books are good too). I just finished The Candidate by Tracey Richardson. It was good.
I am not a literary snob so I can't vouch for anyones writing. Myself, I am a horrible writer so I have no room to talk about anyone elses writing.
Funny, I read a lot of lesbian fiction when I am single. Amazon has made a lot of money off of me these past 12 months. I think I should try to get a girlfriend now. This reading is making me broke.
I just finished reading Merry Shannon's Branded Ann. Even though I usually don't enjoy adventure books, I thoroughly enjoyed this one, especially the battle of wills and sexual tension between the pirate Ann and Violet, the woman who becomes a prisoner on her ship. The two characters (and the love story) were well drawn and believeable. I read the book in two days, was hooked from the first few pages to the end.
OOoh, fun!
Dare, Truth, or Promise

A Fictional History of the

Hood -Emma Donoghue
Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - Lisa See
Hood is quite good

Also recommend Emma Donoghue's Stir-Fry.
Never try Lisa See's books. Does this book have lesbian theme?
graphic novel
Fun Home - Alison Bechdel:

Speculative fiction
Already someone mentioned Fun Home, which I second here too.
Here I would like to mention three lesbian speculative novels.
Broken Wings by LJ Baker
Rangers at Roadsend and The Empress and the Acolyte (actually the whole Lyremouth Chronicles) by Jane Fletcher. These also feature some mystery.
PS: I don't think I need to recommend Sarah Waters's Fingersmith or Jeanne Winterson's Written on the Body. Both are quite well known.
Fried Green Tomaotes
Anything By...
Katherine V. Forrest, in particular the 'Daughters' trilogy. It's a little Sci Fi, it's a little Lesbian Utopia, it's a little action. It's a lotta sex. It's a fantastic read!

Nothing At All
Compares to the Trilogy, in terms of Lesbian Sci-Fi/Fantasty. Nothing comes close!
Anchee Min's

Another plug for The History of Love
Nicola Griffith and Abigail Padgett
I really enjoyed The Last Blue Plate Special by Padgett and several of Griffith's books are good reads.
Padgett is more of a humorist (judging solely by the one novel that I have read) and Griffith's novels are somewhat dark and tragic (in my opinion).

"pages for you" by Sylvia Brownrigg. one of my favorites. i'm trying to adapt it for class.Kelley Eskridge's Dangerous Space
This is her latest collection of short stories and it took me days to get through it. Not because it is tedious but because it is that good! I savored each word and each story. I had to think about each story as I read it, something that doesn't happen often.

How about..
Annie on my Mind by Nancy Garden!
It's a short novel about two young women who become friends and later lovers. And it was the first GLBT book I read! =P
