The State of the Union
There are few good thing I can say regarding Bush's State of the Union address tonight. I'm not sure I would have watched it had I been at home, but since I'm at work, it was a nice distraction. Of the good things, he mentioned 9/11 much less then I anticipated he would. He actually acknowledged Hurricane Katrina. He mentioned the late Coretta Scott King, who died today (She was the wife of Martin Luther King, Jr.).
Reflecting, I paused over his acknowledgement of her contributions to the Civil and Human Rights movement. What a hypocritical bastard. Using one of the heroes and most admired women of our country in his speech; praising her. He opposes Affirmative Action, Gay and Lesbian rights; secretly passes laws which infringe on all of our civil liberties in the name of Homeland Security. And we can't forget the passing of Sam Alito as our new Supreme Court Justice. (I'll leave Chief Justice John Roberts out of this for now)
If this were the 1960's or 1970's, I bet he'd have an entirely different opinion on the matter.
I bet Cindy Sheehan doesn't have much to say about his dedication to Human Rights and equality. Maybe she should have worn an anti-Hillary Clinton shirt instead of the anti-Bush one. She may have been allowed in then. The fallout from this farse will be lovely news. ACLU will have a field day.
And so much talk about the U.S. and isolationism. Hmm, has there been a great push for us to become a more isolated and self-sufficient nation? If so, explain to me what the problem is in that.
Did he bring up border security at all? Why is that not a forefront in the 'War on Terror'? Apparently the best way to stop terrorists is to bring Democracy to the world...
Cause, you know, once you have a Democracy there won't be any more extremists, right?
Seriously, he spent probably half the speech on protecting the nation from terrorists, preventing Iran from processing nuclear weapons, naming all these 'terrorist' countries -- Blah blah blah rhetoric.
The best part was his lack of acknowledging how divided the nation is on the war and how we can remedy this. No, those who have their doubts are labeled as un-patriotic, of course. Naturally we're part of the problem and not the solution.
Oh! I nearly forgot! He's starting some creativity initiative to teach children math! Hm, but what about the recent education cuts? Eh, he's done enough for education, right? No child has been left behind.
I'll save my rant on 'kicking our oil addition' for later.
