Home and Away - Charlie/Joey

So i'm all geared up in England waiting for this storyline to start. Trying my hardest not to look on Youtube but I prolly will anyway! :D

Just wanted to start a discussion topic up about this for all who will be following this storyline.

Anyone know how old Joey is?

I've just started watching it and didn't realise it was gonna be Joey in the storyline, thought she was a cute lil deck hand. She looks about 17/18 though at times, in her cute lil beanie :D

Just thought she might be a bit on the young side for Charlie. It's all interesting aspects though!

I don't watch Home and Away, I prefer Neighbours (not that either of them are very good!) but I am dreading this storyline. My parents absolutely Loooove watching Home and Away and never miss it but they are among the most homophobic people in the world so happy times ahead in our household!

...although, Charlie is hot...I might watch...

Charlie is HOT! That is the only reason why I watch Home and Away religiously at the moment... period! But regarding the story line I am kind of dreading it too, and just HOPE that it is at least well established and built up if nothing else by the end.

Joey does seem young in comparison to Charlie the 'woman'...but, maybe the age thing is meant to play a key in the overall story.. and hell, maybe even be apart of the downfall of their relationship (in the future) if there is going to be a planned bad ending to it.

I'll be interested to see how they deal with Charlie's character through this storyline seeing as we know Joey's sexuality has been 'as it is' right from the start! Whereas with Charlie, this will obv be a new side to her that we wouldn't have seen before and therefore be unexpecting of how she's going to act/and react throughout the whole of it.

And OP, you should just watch it on Youtube now. I wouldn't be able to stay away if I knew I could see it now as opposed to later.

Kate Bell has looked the same for the last 4 or 5 years...she was on an Australian kids/teenagers program a couple of years ago called Blue Water High, I used to watch it when I was 12/13. She really hasn't changed, I never really watched Home and Away and when I was flicking through the channels the other day I was like 'It's Bec!'

But she is supposed to be 19 I believe in Home and Away, although someone has probably already answered that by now...

well, joey came out to her homophobic brother on tonights episode and my parents didn't react to that at all, probably wont have the same reaction when they realise she's going to have a love interest on the show...

Kate Bell's turning 27? She looks sooo much younger!

Charlie let Joey stay at her house in the meantime. Charlie is really committed to "keeping an eye" on Joey. oh Joey stay forever! Wonder when the dance and kiss will happen.

I was about to put that link up, nice work :P It's so much better watching it that way than sitting through an episode of soapy 'goodness'... sorry, not a huge soap fan but I'm interested to see what happens with this storyline! I have a feeling it won't end well :( but atm Charlie and Joey are very cute around each other. Especially when Joey was playing cards and Charlie was standing next to her, and at the station when Charlie went all protective - 'you're staying with us. My orders.' Esther Anderson could order me round any day!

Thanks also Dazed an Hybridstar for the links. I'm watching in the UK so a bit behind, but thank god for youtube, and for the lovely people who upload the clips.

Their day out on the boat looks very cute - can't wait to see it! and yes, hand-holding definitely looks a step in the right direction.

And thanks to AE for the tip off about the storyline - I haven't watched H&A for a while now, but am now rushing home from work to watch it (reminds of when I used to rush home from school to catch it... some things remain the same).

I want to preface this by asking you to excuse my ignorance. I'm from the US and have never been to Australia, but from what I've seen it seems less gay-friendly than say, the UK is. Could the Australian lesbians tell me if they think Australia is more or less homophobic than the US or other western countries?

It's probably much the same as the US, however we don't have a very high population concentration so homophobic groups can't really gather that much momentum - as the others said, it's mainly in the country rural areas that there's a lot of intolerance compared to the big cities such as Sydney and Melbourne. This is true of other things too though as I know some people experience racial and other forms of intolerance in those areas - so it's not really limited to sexuality!! Sydney's just had its annual gay and lesbian mardi gras which pretty much takes over the whole city and has wide community and government (if only for the revenue!) support. It's hugely popular with both gay and straight people, who also head out with their mates to celebrate and join the party. Having said that, there are some very conservative groups (as can be seen on the current affairs program link above on youtube) and Home and Away and Neighbours (its demographic twin and very similar rival soapie) are traditionally very behind the times and try to please as wide an audience as possible - including a lot of retirees - meaning they're quite bland and light on controversy. Basically, and I think others would agree, if it was on any other show no one would care. We get pretty much all the British and US programming featuring shows with gay/lesbian plotlines and I don't hear mention of it in the media.

Just on the side...this is the first time I've watched home and away in years so thanks to everyone for the notes and catch-up links!

I'll like to re-iterate what other Australians have said. Yes Australia is fairly tolerant (note I said tolerant as opposed to acceptant) of gays and lesbians, particularly in bigger cities like Sydney and Melbourne. However, i do think Australia is behind many other 'western' and 'developed' countries. Conservative groups such as "Family first" have had a large impact in the past on the gay population in the past.

Legally, I think Australia is a homophobic country...there is no gay marriage or civil unions. Gay adoption is still illegal. And in that sense, I think that Australia is much more behind the times compared to the UK and other European countries (I have never gay culture in the US, so can't compare) and Canada. However, with our new government, things are changing for the better...

well, it depends on where you are in Australia. I would say Melbourne and Sydney by world standards are extremely gay friendly, I've never been to the UK so I cant compare. I've travelled extensively through the US and I'd say Australia is more gay friendly in my experience(no offence meant to Americans-I havent spent a lot of time everywhere in the states) but I'm sure there are places in both the US and Australia that arent as gay friendly as other areas. I'm not sure what you've seen of Australia but I should mention that most representations of Australia in movies or tv dont really reflect our society accurately.

I think as is the case with a lot of western countries, the large cities tend to be fairly gay-friendly (in particular sydney and melbourne, like stormy_sea said) but the rural areas are less forward thinking and more homophobic. Since Home and Away is set in a small working-class town, it's realistic that there would be more homophobia around.

The only other fairly accurate depiction of gays and lesbians in australia (that I've seen) would have been in the secret life of us, which was on quite a few years ago.

I like jarlie! choey sounds too weird. Tonights episode was interesting. For those who didnt see Charlie's sister pointed out that Joey might be interested in her which made Charlie a bit uncomfortable. Quite predictable but I'm looking forward to tomorrow :)

Wow. Joey *sucks* at dancing. She looks like me when I dance and that is BAD!

lol. It was a cute ep though, they were so very cute and awkward. For those who cant watch they danced to an upbeat song and then there was a slow song playing and they held one hand at first and drifted closer together and held both hands and then Charlie freaked out and left. But it wasnt an oh my god what are you doing kind of freak out, more of an oh my god what am I feeling kind of freak out.

As for next week Charlie is going on a date with Hugo and telling Joey "I like you as a friend" and Joey is being kidnapped by that scary guy (Robbo?)

Lol.. Colleen was pretty hilarious in tonights episode.

how awesome was the boat scenes? i mean yeah some of there moments were a lil bit awkward but my gosh are they amazing together or what?! and when joey grabbed Charlies hand and they slowly moved closer i was like oh my gosh are they goin to kiss or are they going to leave us wondering what's going to happen over the weekend! and then we see that Charlie freaks out and she ran away.

to be honest i was actually expecting Charlie to run away. i mean it was kind of expected.
offcourse at first she's going to freak out but i can't believe that she's going to go out with bloody Hugo because she's in denial about her feelings towards Joey!

I think that after Joey gets kidnapped by Robo or whatever happens Charlie is going to release that she's got the hots for Joey... anyone else reckon this will happen? :P

I don't think I've seen anyone run as fast as Charlie did as she got off that boat!

The acting isn't the best (well it IS Home and Away...) but I think Charlie/Esther did a good job of looking absolutely uncomfortable. For a moment there I thought she was gonna hurl; but then I noticed it could be vulnerability, confusion and anxiety and I thought that was pretty cute.

I was just wondering how far behind we are compared to the stuff described in this thread - the dancing, the almost kissing etc.

In the ep I watched last night Joey was at the police station making a statement when her brother burst in and dragged her away.

I am so looking forward to watching this story unfold. Charlie could arrest me any day!

i dont know it is home and away but im interested to see what happens. Charlie is very hot i like a girl in uniform ;). However the soapies her are not very good. neighbours is a joke but funny to laugh at. im curious to see what happens but :)

Looks like we'll get plenty of 'Jarlie' early next week, and their first kiss should be on... wednesday I think! However in less exciting news I'm pretty sure Joey gets abducted by Robbo and Charlie goes on a date with Hugo. Man I'm getting sucked into this storyline!

Does anyone know how this is going to pan out long term? Whatever happens with her and Joey, I so hope that it's not just a wee phase for Charlie,I would love a regular gay character on H&A and I would so love it to be Charlie, my missus and I have both had a wee thing for her she first appeared on our screen!

I am guessing this is because it really is highly inappropriate for a police officer to get involved with a victim in an active case, but i'll choose to ignore that because i want them together! I read this earlier in the week and thought lame this is what will happen, but then....
