Well, really it boils down to gay and lesbian stereotypes. I've always felt that there was some truth to every stereotype. Though, this particular stereotype lies in the notion that gay men are more effeminate so there are a lot of gay male hairstylists, interior designers, etc. Lesbians are the reverse and are perceived as choosing more masculine careers.
For lesbians, I would go with:
The professional athlete (dated one)
Veterinarian (mine is a lesbian, though I don't know that is really a 'masculine' career)
Park Ranger (a lesbian friend is one)
Law enforcement/EMT/Firefighter (dated one)
Computer-related (Am one myself, dated and know several)
Mechanic
Military (dated one)
Archaeologists - That's one field where EVERY woman looks like a lesbian...Or is it just me?
I wonder if lesbians who work in one of the stereotype environments are more apt to come out of the closet because the stereotype makes it easier? Assumed.
Artist (visual), publicist, designer, anything related to television and film, there also tends to be a good amount of lesbians in modern dance(thank god!), theater, oh yeah! anything books and magazines...writers, editors... Architects! Most women artist who tend towards 3d stuff are gay, something about sculptures...Lawyers! And in all those professions, if they are not originally gay they will at least bend a couple of times before retirement.
it's funny, i've been pretty athletic all of my life, and while i do know some lesbians who play sports, there also seems to be a great number who are homophobes (in my experience, and whatever the reasons are could also say something about them). a lot of my friends were involved with musical theater or acting in college.... and to talk about stereotypes, it also seems that the ones who weren't were much more accepting than other people i've come into contact with. any thoughts??
it's funny you bring that up verdepark. i played sports throughout high school and college... and my (allegedly straight) teammates were some of the most homophobic people ever. we had a couple lesbians per team, but we were scared to come out publicly to them because of all their meanness. anti-lesbian sentiments on many sports teams were very, very strong.
i'm sure it has to do with internalized homophobia, and them not wanting anyone to think they were lesbians because they played sports. even though some of them, i wonder... ;-) i've been surprised (pleasantly and not) by people's reactions throughout the years.
okay, i meant to say that a lot of my other lesbian or bi friends were involved with musical theater or acting; much more than with my athlete friends.
There are many lesbians who are vegetarians, I believe, and I must say I don't like meat all that much myself either =P. Oh, and someone once said that only lesbians wear thumb-rings...but I doubt it =P
My friend works at a jewelry store. Her boss was talking to her on one of the first days, telling her how to sell stuff, what to sell, what normally sells to which kind of people and she goes...
"I don't know why...but gay and lesbian people often tend to buy thumb rings."
We joke with her (the one who works at the jewelry store) every time she wears her thumb rings now, because she's totally straight.
... oh, and I fall under the vegetarian stereotype as well. And the softball one.
Anything that involves women having power, particularly over men - e.g. lawyers, police officers, etc. - and they've probably been called gay. It ought to be called the Hillary Clinton Effect. ;)
"My tongue's the only muscle on my body that works harder than my heart."
I've noticed a lot of lesbian midwives, especially in the Bay Area. They don't just do prenatal care and delivery - they also do gyn exams and well-woman care. I guess it's a feminist health care thing.
I also agree with the people who mentioned social work and vet medicine.
I am currently working very hard on my degree in physical education and health education. I am also very close to finishing. (OK, not THAT close) Furthermore, I am VERY much a lesbian. All but one of my female professors in my major are lesbians, or at least they set off my gaydar, especially my advisor. Growing up, all but two of my physical education teachers were not exactly closeted either... so, I don't know if it is a lesbian profession, or we were all just athletic and love directing and teaching students or if History just seemed like too much damn work? Alright, that is all I have.
I totally forgot about security gaurds. I was one, same with my girlfriend (it lasted all of a month, and it wasnt fun). Not only that be we have a few friends who were too at one point or another.
unfortunately for whatever reason, I haven't run into that many single gay ladies in my doc program, but at conferences there are plenty! but there's some nice eye candy ;-P and plenty of hot married straight ladies who totally set off my gaydar!!

Agree on Archaeologists
I think it's the requisite cargo shorts and hiking boots.
Kinda the same for the military, even straight women look like lesbians in camo and combat boots...
