Gray Matters

Has anyone seen any reviews about this film? It's apparantly finally being released next month (February). This link has some still shots (looks like Helena from TLW is in it):

"Gray Matters is a romantic comedy that sets sibling rivalry on its head. They finish each other's sentences, dance like Fred and Ginger, and they're all hearing wedding bells. All? No menage-a-trois here--just Gray and Sam (Graham and Cavanagh), a sister and brother so compatible they wind up falling for the same woman. But while Charlie (Moynahan) adores her sister-in-law to be, and Sam has finally found the perfect mate, Gray has feelings for Charlie that are about to turn her life inside out. Gray Matters gives a whole new meaning to love...and destiny."

Awwe

I just watched the trailer on youtube... and ok wow. how cute does this movie look? lol =]

The cast is too much. 'Helena', Molly Shannon, Alan Cumming AND Heather Grahame?! A double dose of hotness and funny all rolled into one movie  =]  lol

Madonnaholic's picture

Yup.

This film has hotties ABOUND, heh heh. :)

Hot!

Have just seen the trailer and all I can say is YAY! Gay themed movies do not always have to be so depressing!

At first I was dissappointed that Saffron Burrows pulled out of the role and replaced by Bridget Moynahan cuz I can't think of any Coyote Ugly chick memorable apart from Piper Perabo and Tyra Banks. But when I saw the trailer and then bam! Bridget is so fineee. Oh, and Rachel Shelley, with her sexy English accent, still shines with only one liner: "You really are adorable." Who cannot be melt by that?

The guy who plays Sam is very charming but Gray should get the girl because Gray matters!

Anyone knows if it will be released in Australia?

Heather/Rachel

Sarah just saw the film, and said the Heather/Bridget kiss was hot--good to know! :)  I'm wondering, however, if Heather and Rachel kiss? Uh...has someone taught Rachel how to kiss yet?

Ah, My Summer of Love. I totally stopped watching it halfway through because it made me angry.

I might convince one of my friends to come with me to see this, just in case it sucks so I'll have someone to rant about it with.

VelvetBruise's picture

SAW BOTH...

I saw both movies and I thought they were pretty decent. I know My Summer of Love is a bit depressing but it's life and that's how it really goes (especially in conservative France) but I liked the ending of both Gray and Summer, they seemed more realistic to me.

OMG

DO NOT slag my summer of love until you've seen it

it IS very deppressing, but it's compelling, intruiging, breathtaking and beautiful, not to mention it makes the book tremble in comparison.

Plus, Emily Blunt is hotness defined; granted in a scary evil way, but she's always cute

I don't know. I kind of liked MSOL overall, but towards the end I thought, Oh no, not the dead evil lesbian cliche again! For those who have been on the Kitten boards, you know what I mean.

It is a compelling narrative, but I think it's a sign of progress that now we get the happy endings too in movies like IM&Y or Show Me Love.

Heather Graham's publicity rounds

Hey all,

I missed HG on Regis and Kelly today.  I'm hoping someone will post the interview on good ol' Youtube.  There was a short clip of Heather and Bridget (who just announced she's 3 mos pregnant by ex Tom Brady) on Extra, where they both said their kiss was "amazing."

But, Heather will be on Late Night with Conan tonight, so check her out. :)

Rachel plays a lesbian in the movie??

huh... interesting.. very interesting! I love Rachel too!!!

Madonnaholic's picture

Yup :-)

Rachel plays one of Gray's (Heather's) clients.  Rachel has said in interviews that she "helps" Heather's character on her road to discovering she's gay, but I'm not sure if there's a love scene involoved (although this clip hints that they go home together).  Or, maybe there IS a love scene, but we just don't get it see it--they have to keep it PG-13 somehow, I guess. lol

Egotastic.com also has the full kissing scene up on their site as well. I'm too lazy to go back and find the actual link. Just look in their Heather Graham section and I'm sure you will find it. It's worth checking out cause it's seriously hot.

Just saw "Gray Matters"...twice

Wow, the film definitely brought out the girls tonight (and for some strange reason, in Vegas, the old people as well LOL).  I swear, it was like les-bengay city up in there!  I'm not a professional movie critic, just someone who loves films.  I judge a film on how entertaining it was, the way it looks, the cast, and how it makes me feel--did I give a rat's patooty about the characters?  In this film, I really did, especially Gray (Heather Graham).  I've said b4 that I've always thought that Graham was way under-rated.  Gray Matters proves what I've known all along--Heather has the talent to carry a movie, not just be a supporting actress.  She transforms herself into Gray, a quirky ad exec, and you CARE about her.  You're rooting for Gray to be happy.  The rest of the cast is awesome, namely Bridget Moynahan (who had incredible chemistry with Heather), and Tom Cavanugh.

I did feel that the film was a little rushed, and it didn't fully deal with the after effects of Gray's coming out; it dealt well with how she felt about the kiss with Charlie (Moynahan), but what about how she felt after bedding Julia Bartlett (Rachel Shelley)? I don't know about you, but the first time I had sex with a girl was a HUGE thing for me.  For Gray, it's more confirmation that she's gay (and that's awesome), but I would have liked to have known how she felt about it.

Also, no explanation was ever given to why Charlie kissed Gray in the first place.  I mean, Charlie clearly made the first move, and I'm sorry, but you don't moan and groan that much while kissing if you're not likin' it!  I thought:  "Maybe since Gray and Sam are so much alike, Charlie thought she was kissing him?"  Then, I was like, "Um, HELLO!  There is no way on earth a girl as unbelievably hot as Heather Graham could EVER be mistaken for a man."

All in all, I really enjoyed Gray Matters, and I'm sure I'll see it again with more friends.

shiggity's picture

HaHa. I saw it in Vegas too

HaHa. I saw it in Vegas too and the bringing out the old people comment is hilarious. We noticed that also.
Madonnaholic's picture

I know!

What was UP with that?  Where did you see it?  Did you like it?
shiggity's picture

I think some of the old

I think some of the old people had no idea what they were getting themselves into.

The Orleans at 735pm. I liked it enough. You could tell it was written by a straight woman all over the place which got annoying sometimes but I lived with it. I thought there were two scenes which needed to happen which was like a kinda final scene with Charlie that wasn't at the tank and for the love of everything I can't believe they forwarded to the next morning after the bar. That was a complete cop-out.

I actually realy liked the character of Gray and her co-worker. Everyone else didn't really matter. Her rant about finding someone that didn't think Ginger Rogers was a Spice Girl or that Truffaut is a mushroom or whatnot, was amusing.

Madonnaholic's picture

Oh, okay...

I saw it at the Orleans as well, but later that night.  Yes, I also think some of the older people did know what they movie was about (judging by some of the gasps during both the kissing scene, and when Bridget showed up nearly nude in front of Gray b4 they bathed together--I had NO objection to that scene, though LOL).

Well, the film's lack of raciness is due to the director wanting a PG-13 film.  According to Rachel Shelley, she and Heather did shoot some kind of intimate scene (guess we'll have to wait for the extras on the DVD), but it was obviously cut out.  i mean, I'd settle for something like a scene showing them in bed, and Gray looking wide-eyed and satisfied, saying, "Oh my god...I'm SO gay!" in typical Gray fashion, of course.

I've looked everywhere on all the upcoming release websites for here but can find it nowhere! Darn, was hoping for some bigass Leicester Square premiere during which I could handcuff myself to Rachel Shelley and throw away the key (swear to God a Dutch reporter just did this to Hugh Grant at an Amsterdam premiere)!

She isn't really my type, but for those who disagree I recommend checking out the OH in Ohio. She is in it for only a couple of scenes, but she plays a really cute lesbian, sex shop employee. Doesn't hurt her likability to share a few scenes with Parker Posey either.

Yeah, I only recently got into Heather Graham, as there are certain elements about her personality that really annoy me, HOWEVER, she is VERY cute...damn it!

Can someone write a review for the OH IN OHIO

THANK YOU!!

OH in Ohio

I'd write one, but I just found it to be sooo blah.  I skipped over a lot of it.

As for Heather.  I don't know.  Something about her has always just been really sexy to me.  It's odd, because I havne't seen many of her movies, but loved her on Scrubs, and I actually did was "Emily" before it was canned.  Yes, I see how HG can be annoying, but I also think that she's very talented.

dejablu's picture

For me, HG is usually best

For me, HG is usually best taken in small doses.  That doe-eyed ingenue personna she affects gets very wearisome after awhile, especially since she's being doing it for the better part of her career.  Perhaps it is better suited for television -- I did like the part she played on Scrubs

Tash - lol thanku! I hope it

Tash - lol thanku! I hope it does show here, and not just in an Imagine Me & You only at random cinemas type way! If it does, I might hafta unleash some fury! And the handcuffing yourself to Rachel Shelley plan is quite inspired, let me know how it goes! lol

I'm curious to know how this

I'm curious to know how this film ends... could someone PM me a spoiler? Does Gray get together with someone, or is the film basically about her coming out? Does Bridget Moynahan wind up with Gray's brother?

DVD out in June

DVD will be released on 06/19/2007. It features a "Behind the Scenes" but I'm not sure whether it includes some intimate scenes or not.

Please check the announcement in DVD Times for the covert art and its details (not so much though).

PS: don't like the cover art. :(

I'm interested in seeing this one.

I don't know about any of you but this film's synopsis sounds all too familiar to my life in more than one way.  I've totally fallen for the same woman as my brother.  (I recommend avoiding this at all cost, by the way).  My brother also turned out to be gay later though, so the wounds healed up quite nicely.  Heather Graham is supposedly very good in this film.  I am rather eager to see it.  I hated the movie "Hope Springs" that she did with Colin Firth, but I'll never forget that scene when she downed a bottle of whisky!  It's amazing. haha.  Anyhow... on with the show.
Madonnaholic's picture

Yup...

You will absolutely adore Heather in this film.  It has big flaws, but she made the film worthwhile for me.  It's definitely worth picking @ your local video store when it comes out in June.

Just don't expect too much from the film.

As for your situation...did you get the girl?

Nat Wrote: Gray Matters: Poster Child For Bad Lesbian Movie

This is copied from a duplicate thread.
wondernat wrote:

I watched this movie yesterday and was highly disappointed.

Heather Graham and Tom Cavanaugh basically had to carry this awkwardly unbelievable script for five hours (or however long it actually was). From the beginning, every single element of this movie is unbelievable. I think I looked over to my gf about 10 times during the movie and asked, "Who'd do that?", "That never happens, not even in Fantasyland," and "Do they expect us to believe that?"

The movie centers around Gray (Graham) and her issues with intimacy. Things get interesting when she realizes that she and her brother have unexpectedly WAY too much in common.

Interesting, intriguing. However, instead of unraveling this story into something believable and palatable, the director keeps taking Gray into these ludicrous twists that never actually make any sense at all. I'd even be insulted if the writer's queer.

Had it not been for the cute chemistry between Cavanaugh and Graham (which, by the way, was understandably forced), I would give it a negative 3 stars.

So to sum it up, this movie's BAD because:

1) I could've crapped a better script.

2) Character development was ridiculous/ludicrous/unbelievable. (i.e., "ooh, I feel like Gray should be able to fly now!" "That's a great idea, let's do it!")

3) Acting. Man, Moynihan is beautiful, but it really wasn't enough. ("I'm Bridget, I'm perfect. I'm just going to smile and smile so that nobody pays attention to how I'm enunciating my lines!") Granted, it works for 10 minutes, but afterwards, it's really annoying.

4) Graham... she was cute, but then, her performance gets really forced.

And the most annoying part of it all is...

Because there's a neurotic lipstick lesbian questioning her sexuality, this "film" is automatically dubbed a "Lesbian" movie. Booooooooo.

Why can't we get an intelligent and creative writer/director/producer to come up with GOOD lesbian movies? I can't really blame anybody on this project because I'm sure the writer/director's original vision wasn't this ridiculous. What will it take for us to have good cinema w/ lesbian themes? So frustrating, and yes, I'm done bitching, thanks folks!

I was disappointed too

after watching this movie. To me the problems in this movie are the plots and characterization. Yup, it's light and funny sometimes, but can be tiresome after a while.
smidge's picture

Welll

Mmkay, well I loved it.  Particularly the speech in the lift, she summed up the problems of every gay person on the planet, despite how times may have changed, and I think Graham did this in a completely believable way, and I totally sympathised.  But then, perhaps I'm too easily pleased..
southern girl's picture

hmmm

i watched this movie...and i was not very impressed with it. it was OK. cute. but there are some things that just rubbed me the wrong way in it. the 'lets get toasted' line yeah that was awkward and to forced..... i dont think "charlie" played a good drunk person. lack of chemistry. weird psychologist. although they made the brother and sister co-dependent i dont think that chemistry was good either...i love my brother but that was awkward- it should have been labeled more of a comedy. i mean the elevator scene where she reveals that shes lonely and will never be able to walk down the street with her partner and such yah thats how it may be but i felt like she was breaking down to fast or something...i dont know it wasnt believable to me. im sure my sister will be a smart-a** and buy it for me...but i wouldnt buy it. it sucks bc i was really disappointed... i really wanted to like it. i did like the "take the R out of gray and bingo!" line that had me laughing...

It's all fun and games until you fall for a straight girl!
