Finanical Crisis and Xenophobia abroad
Right now I'm in Europe, studying with a Spanish government scholarship and trying as best as I can to get through my studies.
Unfortunately, I have been seeing a LOT of xenophobia against foreign workers, foreign scholarship recipients, anything/one foreign. Not only in my host country, but also in GB, where locals staged a protest against foreign workers in London less than 4 weeks ago. I've spoken with my Spanish friends and they are equating the financial crisis based nationalism that is occurring now to the one we witnessed in the period between the two great wars. I was a bit shocked they were making this parallel but given the evidence and current trends, the uneducated, desperate masses seem to be heading that way.
I am just saddened and afraid for all of us right now... xenophobia or any ignorance-based hatred towards a race, sexuality, or gender is terrifying. Five minutes ago I posted a story regarding how Shamin Sarif's father's business partners have pulled out from his business because Shamin is openly gay. Two days ago, a protest was staged against foreign scholarship recipients 10 minutes away from my apartment. The London xenophobic protests... what next?
Of course, I share this so we are all aware that there are these trends occurring all around us, and we be neither indifferent nor accepting of these actions.
Education, not violence!
