News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Stereotypical Lesbian.

As i nestled in for the last weekend of regular season football on sunday i looked down at my Broncos gear, pulled back hair and kaki pants and thought..."what a lesbian!"- i find that so much of the time, i have become such a lesbian stereotype...the following serve as my embarrasing examples

1)I find myself living in misc. sports gear(numerous jerseys, team shirts, hats, coffee mugs, etc)- my idea of a fantastic date begins in any sort of stadium/arena-sporting event   2)My place is covered in back issues of Curve and Bitch, surprise eh? 3) I devour every bit of LGBT literature, entertainment, etc. even though some of it is total crap 4)I will take a bud light over a cosmo any day 5) I enjoy spending entire weekends drinking beer and watching nothing but football, both college and NFL 6) i like to build, sand, paint, finish, etc. 6) I own timberland work boots and a pair of those sweet 90's combat boots 7) My cd collection includes much  KD Lang, Ani, Tori, Regina, Indigo girls, Tegan and Sara and other misc. 'lezzie music', and the icing on the cake is the "kiss" poster that has been nicely framed and hanging over my bed for years *sigh*

Care to confess any of the lesibian stereotype categories you fall into??

Well...

I'm quite young, so I'm not so sure of all the stereotypes, but other than the music I listen to, my constant need to find out who's gay, and my love of sneakers,

I'm attracted to women...

I know, so stereotypical.

Mikki Ken's picture

I'm an AE member

Is that a good enough lesbian stereotype?

(I loved your post!!!! :-)

a moment after I opened

a moment after I opened your post I saw on the ESPPN ticker that the Broncos fired Shanahan... the heads continue in the NFL

In response to your question, I would say that you may already figured out my answer. I'm like you in a lot of ways. I tell people I have 'sports on tv' disease. I can be out anywhere, in the middle of a deep conversation, only to be distracted by some highlight on sportscenter. :)

I'm pretty much a sucker for any lesbian related movie/tv show. I'm not so much into music (besides the old standbys Melissa, Indigo Girls, etc.).

I wear boy's clothes, listen

I wear boy's clothes, listen to Tegan and Sara, and am a passionate feminist.  Also, I don't shave my legs.  Also, I have short hair. Also, I am pretty fucking gay.

Pretty

Pretty fucking gay, I love that! Elegantly put.

I'm a feminist, I dislike

I'm a feminist, I dislike wearing bras, and listen to alot of 90's lezzie lillith music. I also prefer beer over any drink and have really short shaggy hair. However, I love wearing dresses and wear them almost everyday (even in winter) where does that come from?

Stereotype here

Let's see...I too love football.  I know more about football than most girls know and the guys I work with are always surprised when I throw in some stat or something on football teams/players.

-drive a subaru, manual transmission

-I could live in home depot, I literally have to force myself to walk out of there

-I apparently think like a guy (at least my friends seem to think I do)

-I like women

-I like fixing things (not sure that's really a stereotype though)

-I don't wear make-up, skirts, dresses, or heels. Mostly jeans and a t-shirt. My hair is always up, I've had the same style for years.

-I have a collection of hats that sit along the rear window of my car

-I don't carry a purse, just a wallet in my back pocket

Think that's about it.  One stereotype I don't fit though...I hate cats.  I'll never be the cat lady.  Maybe the dog lady.

lesbian stuff.

my mom gave me a list of music she wanted me to download for her..

Kd Lang, Sarah McLachlan, INDIGO GIRLS?, Annie Lennox and some other lesbian stuff that I don't even remember. So I called her a big fat lezzie.

um. My lesbian stuff? I like men's clothes. That's about it.

And men's underwear.

I got a dick like a mule...with a big dick.

Lana 's picture

I like girls - what?

I play rugby and I'm majoring in women's studies - if that doesn'tscream lessssssssbian i don't know what does.

I have an over excessively large and may i say scandalous poster of Marilyn Monroe beside my wimpy little half size poster of james dean.

If there is a lesbian in it, Im watching it

I try to convince my friends that the L word is amazing and that no there isn't too much lesbian going on in it

I'm as Hard

as they come, no pun intended lol, but I always make time to play team sports with mostly guys. I don't watch football, but right now if the Celtics and/or Lakers are playing it's a party at... your house lol. I just don't like having random people over, thank you very much. I also do the casual boy wear thing, no jerseys or hats or any of that sports junkie stuff, but I do rock the polo and jeans look way too much it should be a crime, but it's comfortable and I like it. Other than that, I'm thinking about trading my car in for a pick up, to make the U-Haul experience a lot cheeper. Not that I will ever go into a relationship looking for a U-hauler but being on this site has inspired me to be prepared for such a phenomena. lol Yup, I think that's pretty much it. Ooh and.. I love Pie.

5. I prefer hard liquor none of the daquiri or cosmos(YUCK)

6. I own a cigarrette lighter with the black and white star on it

7. I refuse to wear any colors that are not neutral unless it comes in a rainbow

8. My nickname of course Matt you can't get any more of a lesbian than that : )

sten's picture

Pyewacket's picture

I drive an old truck with a stick.

I have a cat.

When I dress to get comfy in my house, its mens clothes.

Since I was a little girl, I have always loved to saw, hammer, sand, and paint...thus the scent of wood in Home Depot can take me to my happy place.  lol

I love to hike, camp, canoe...bicycle, downhill ski, and cross-country ski.

I am drawn to any show with any lesbian or bisexual character like a moth to a flame.  I find them without even knowing that there is going to be a gay character in the movie or tv show.

indygirl26's picture

I have a huge...

...lego collection.

I don't shave my legs in the winter because I can get away with it. I make sure I shave as much as possible in the summer so that I can wear as little as possible in order to turn "straight" girls' heads.

I always wear sensible shoes because what the hell is the point of not doing so? Getting blisters?

I refuse to wear a skirt to work even though my boss tried to make it a mandatory part of our dress code. I told him I'd fight it to the bitter end. He relented.

I collect beer glasses, but I do enjoy girly drinks a lot, moreso than beer, I'm afraid.

I'll usually only watch it or read it if it has lesbian subtext in it.

I don't know. Are these things even lesbian stereotypes?

GrrrlRomeo's picture

I'm a stereotypical Geek

More than I'm a stereotypical lesbian.

I read comic books. I like sci-fi movies. I'm a Web Developer. And I wear glasses.

When I was teenager, my friends and I would go to a friend's house and play D&D in the basement while watching Monty Python or Red Dwarf. It really doesn't get geekier than that. I drink Crown Royal because you really can't have too many dice bags.

Corzy's picture

Haha

Haha That's pretty much the way I am. I work on computers, wear glasses, read graphic novels, and I love scifi movies. I get my friends together and we watch stupid scifi movies and of course Monty Python.

I never got into D&D. My friend's dad plays though.

But I am still a lesbian stereotype.

tori.catherine's picture

I can use more power tools

I can use more power tools than most men. (techie!)

I have four cats.

The only time I've worn a dress in years was when my ex made me wear one to prom.

I used to work in the hardware section in Sears.

And now for the feminine side ;o

Here representing for all the feminine (and proud!) women, I'd like to say that I'd make a pretty good "life partner" (the kind who actively raises kids and wants to live down the street from all the gay dads someday-whoo!-).

Let's See:

- I guess I can attest to that whole lesbians are "vegetarians" (if not vegan) stereotype. I looovee organic foods and soy products!

- I do love advocating for women's rights, and I would take any man down (verbally of course) in the name of Feminism.

- I am very strong and independent, and being feminine doesnt mean that you have to sacrifice your strength in any way.

Just Be Yourself...Beautifully <3

chicken or the egg?

Betty the babe, this was not at all a knock on feminity..Oh yes, i own as many cocktail dresses as polos and far more designer heels than I care to disclose.  Its just that from time to time, I look in the mirror and wonder when the hell i became the big ol lesbian in the room, hah.  suppose it makes dating a bit easier...However, when the time comes, I am ALWAYS the one in the dress. Somethin about the tomboys, love 'em..*sigh*  I find myself eating hummus like it is going out of style, and have been a veggie for eight years. On the note of the viggie thing, i sometimes wonder, it is kinda like the chicked and the egg.  what came first..the vegetarian or the lesbian? I cannot drive a stick shift or change a flat tire...but i wont lie, i will take my vintage broncos t, a cold beer, my tims and a day at a sporting event over most things.

I'm pretty much obsessed

I'm pretty much obsessed with lesbians. Not in a creepy way, haha. I am just drawn to lesbian content in general. I am currently watching a Shot at Love 3 (gag!), if that gives you any degree of my obsession! I am also extremely liberal, and I am a proud feminist. I am going to minor in women's studies. I do not like sports or any 'manly' things, though...
sounds so sweet and clear's picture

yup... a lot

i am pssionate about what i belive in...womens rights for sure....so i dont what they say about feminist..we rock

I like sports and that means i get along with guys....plus my brother whos is gay tells me I think like a guy....oh I love working out...u know weight training...I am kinda getting into yoga

I drink good beer none of that light stuff...I love all kinds of fruity drinks...but I drink vodka and soda...i just like the strong stuff(not whiskey eww)

i dont get manicure and pedicure often once in a blue moon....i like to dress a bit like a guy...jeans t shirt, nice coat.....i never wear skirts...or hardly any dress..just when i have to....i love pants

Em's picture

very stereotypical

where to start?

1. I LOVE sports of all kinds (to play and watch). I was born on New Year's Day, which is ironic because my parents always joked with me that the doctor and my dad were watching football while my mom was in labor. Now I spend all New Year's Day watching any and all games that are on!!

2. When I am not at work I wear mostly men's clothing.  I own so many polo's my friends forbid me from buying anymore. :)

3. my I-Pod cycles between Melissa Etheridge, Tegan and Sarah, Melissa Ferrick and countless other lezzie artists.

4. I too have the "kiss" poster on my wall.

5. I play the guitar, though I can't sing to save my life.

6. If I am not outside hiking, fishing, golfing, etc... I am watching or reading anything lesbian.

7. Pretty much the only stereotype I don't fit is the vegetarian thing. I am very much a steak and potatoes girl.

Oh yeah, and I have played softball since I was 5!!!!!!!!  I love it!!!
