the lesbian capital of the world is.....???

What country do you think is the most OUT in terms of homosexuality ?
(entertainment, population, politics,etc)

Bilbao

Although northern euro women have a higher tendency of looking gay. Well, truth be told, I think that the les capital of the world just might be Bilbao. With the added plus that spanish women, and in particular vasque women are extremely hot, cultured, inteligent... Barcelona too. And actually my current city of residence Madrid, is not bad at all in concentration. But bilbao is intense, thousands of lesbians flooding the streets. I think it might even give Sf, and the entire Bay Area a run for its money... Don't know what to say about Amsterdam, I'm always very overwhelmed by the amount of drunk/stoned british 20 somethings...

From what i've seen

From what i've seen first-hand, Montreal and Vancouver have huge gay/lesbian scenes.

Its an interesting question but I suppose it comes down to how we define what 'out' means - ie. by the number of outwardly gay establishments, by the ratio of out people in the population or do we define it by the politics of the city / capital / country etc.

When I read the question I thought of Brighton / Manchester here in the UK and San Francisco in ther US but how you'd even sdefine / decide the 'gayest' between those places is difficult.

Cant wait to read peoples opinions!

Hey, I thought that was Andersonville in Chicago.

Or Park Slope in New York.

Yep, there's no capital. Just a couple of blocks dedicated to lesbians.

I am, of course, being sassy. Only slightly.

[quote:0d0cbd7d46="gali"]I want to put in a vote for tel-aviv. Have to admit haven't been there for a while but there use to be a good amount of gay/lesbian bars, plenty of very open gays. as far as I've heard israel was one of the first countries to legally accept same-sex partners in things like pensions etc (even before holland) and culturally speaking (?) they won the eurovision song contest 3 times. with a lesbian, a gay guy and a transsexual.[/quote:0d0cbd7d46]
Really? I didn't know, that's so cool! :D

[quote:506d43179b="cosmiccowgirl"]So are the lesbian capital and the "gay" capital the same thing?[/quote:506d43179b]

I'd say no. I mean, take a look at Amsterdam: yeah sure, are al rights are secured, people won't look at you too funny when you kiss your girlfriend on the streets (though I had way too many invitations for threesomes) and when it comes to the political climate it's brilliant and I feel blessed to be citizen of the Netherlands. But if you look at the social establishments for lesbians here or the lesbian scene... not so good. But that might just be me. You have only a handful of lesbianbars, scattered over town (not like the gayboys, they have their whole friggin street ;)), and you'll always see the same faces there. Pretty much of an incrowd that is, in my experience, little acceptive of outsiders. Almost every single mixed gay and lesbian initiative turns into a male bar in no time because the lesbians stay away. Amsterdam has always known a more male dominant gayscene, and though I have my thoughts about why that is, I won't hijack the whole thread here

My point being... lesbian capital would be Berlin. At least that's what I think

I think a lot of cities are like that actually, which is sad for us. Newcastle's Pink Triangle, for example, is currently promoting the Ladyboys of Bangkok, but there's nothing for the gay girls in the city.

windeater's picture

well, I have to say that my vote for Berlin is not based on the fact that I know so much of the lesbian nightlife, but more that I was (almost literary) tripping over lesbians there. In all sorts and varieties. For some reason, they're much more 'visible' in the 'normal' nightlife too... and there's much more mixed places where you find a good share of girls do. My 'lesbadar' (willow, how I miss thee...) was overloaded is all I'm sayin....

windeater's picture

ps: plus I slept with more Berlin-girls in my short time there than I ever did with Amsterdamresidents in my 7 years that i've called it my home. but maybe that says more about me

Come to think of it, you're so right about that. I'd never go to a lesbianbar or anything like it in the Netherlands though...so far, all Dutch gay girls I've seen annoyed me. Very. I feel like all gay/bi girls here are like [i:1756901e25]Look at meee! I'm a lesbian! YAY![/i:1756901e25]. They're so visible, it freaks me out. And I despice that way of behaving, 'cause that's how people get to think that all lesbians are like that. I find it very difficult to explain, but the bottom line is that I have never felt comfortable meeting/seeing any Dutch gay girl so far. It's hard to explain why.

koma's picture

I would say Amsterdam, Netherlands (or just the Netherlands, since the question was about country, not city :P).

The country has full-on marriage for gay couples, and Amsterdam is notoriously liberal. When we were planning our holiday a while back, Kirsty told me that you could walk down the streets there holding your partner's hand and no one would even look twice, let alone say something. Bliss.

With all due respect to [b:05bcb9e8af]Carol[/b:05bcb9e8af], I wouldn't say San Francisco because there is no legal recognition of gay couples in America. The city is very gay (about 25%, IIRC), but legal acceptance is nil and I think that really puts a damper on things.

(IMHO YMMV)

I'm really looking forward to seeing what everyone else comes up with. Very cool topic!

well, they're all on the prowl... don't suppose it's any different in other dykebars, but in amsterdam you always see these groups of women standing around, checking everybody out, but at the same time don't actually leave the group to make their move. it's all very dutch. 'we' don't like to mingle. or something. i don't know...

I feel like holding up the 'yeah that' sign as well...windeater is right. And I'm glad you feel the same way, klaas (such a Dutch name, lol)...I know it might not be fair to say that I'm not comfortable around Dutch lesbians, 'cause I know they're (we're :P) not all like that...but it's just that I've never met someone like me. Someone whose clothes/hair/mouth isn't screaming: I'M A LESBIAN! :P

Uh... okay, I know you guys are gonna think it's weird me asking...

But I happen to know a lonely girl in The Netherlands. Have for a long time. I (and others) TRY to get her out of the house... look around, y'know... DO SOMETHING... but it's sounding like it's kinna different for you Dutch.

So I'm gonna ask - and you can jump down my throat if ya want - what should a lonely, lesbian, Dutch girl do?

Yeah, I kind of thought about that after I'd posted... :) Figured about all that'd be right for me to do is tell 'er what's up and see if she'll come over.

I'm 'fraid I don't remember the name of her town - Dutch, y'know, I'd have to be looking right at it to spell it anyway - besides which it'd be REALLY inappropriate for me to say. But she DID say that it wasn't very friendly to homosexuals, unlike a lot of the rest of The Netherlands.

"coc". Ahem. Right. I'll mention it. :) Thanks.

cathje's picture

the lesbian capital of the world is.....???

I've never gone to a gay bar or anything (I'm too chicken), but I've been wanting to check out the COC in Leiden (apparently, their parties ARE nice in contrast to other COCs which are more about 'I'm gay and it's a problem and I keep seeing it as a problem, although nobody really cares'. Also, I heard that PANN parties in Utrecht are nice and also attract straight, gay-friendly people, which is also very nice (on a side note, there are gay bars that don't want straight people in there in Holland, it's totally insane :? ).

So yeah, I need to get some courage to go.

fee's picture

@ cathje, if you feel like going, I should totally go if I were you. Why not try it sometime? I personally don't go because I'm not comfortable about it...but I've explained that too often already in this thread :P

and failte...I think there are lots of things to do for that girl! Is she depressed or something? She just needs some friends to take her out to the cinema or something, anything. I love Amsterdam by the way. It's one of my favourite cities :D

Not a bar person myself - especially loud ones. And when the big thing is drinking... well, not much of a drinker either. Also not very talkative (yeah, go figure, eh?). So I feel more than a little hypocritical when I tell the girls they should go to bars... but... it's all I can think of.

As for my Dutch friend... I don't really wanna single her out or anything when she's not here to tell me to STFU. But she's not the only one, she's just the only Dutch one (that I know).

Suffice it to say the YES they're depressed, because they don't have gf's, and for whatever reason, don't know how to go about finding one. So they develop 'Net 'ships. Which is good an' all... but I don't have to tell you, it ain't the same.

I too immediately thought of The Netherlands and Amsterdam, which is certainly the gay culture capital of Europe.

Other places that spring to mind (rightly or wrongly) and not countries... are Manchester, Brighton (UK), San Fransisco (USA), Sydney (Oz), but also Canada? I have never been, but from what i here is it quite an open minded place?

I don't know, I've read so many opinions like that on other gay fora like that, so that's why. Of course, I can't speak for myself then, but it's also quite hard to try out everything before you find something of it, right? :)

oh yes, here in Canada, we're sooooooo open !! ;) hehe !!

Conundrum's picture

the lesbian capital of the world is.....???

Canada has an interesting dynamic, lol. People are accepting, but they're not understanding (if that makes any sense at all). Basically what that means is, if you were walking down the street holding your girlfriend/wife/partner's hand, people will probably stare at you. Not because they're judging you, but because they find it interesting that you're brave enough to do that. People here are always impressed by same-sex couples who aren't afraid to show public affection, because Canadians are very aware that the stigma still exists (which--not to knock on any Americans or anything--is probably a result of living next-door to the States).

I don't really know about other cities, but that is so true ^. Not everyone is like that, but a lot of people don't see it as a problem. I'm living in a small village, but last year a girl brought her gf to a dance and she'd just kiss her and everything with the whole school there. No big deal. (To most people, not everyone. Though no-one acted nasty :)).
I love Amsterdam btw. It's the best :P :D
