San Francisco Dec 13-17

Hi everyone,

I'm going to a meeting in San Francisco on December 13-17. The meeting is huge and I'll have a lot of down time. I wonder if any of you would help me find some places to visit and events to attend in this fabulous city. I went to the same meeting 6 years ago in San Fran and I ended up doing sightseeing all by myself. It was nice, but this time, I'd like to go to some places where people gather. Any lesbian events? Book reading? Nice coffee houses to relax? Good restaurants? I'll stay in a hotel near the Union Square. I live in a small Midwest town, so tasting something lesbian and liberal once in a while would be nice..... Thank you!

Hmmm

I personally don't know much about SF, but you can check SF's gay travel guide and look up events during December : http://www.onlyinsanfrancisco.com/gaytravel/

I'm sure there will be some group events!

I hope that helps :)

Thanks for pitching in

From the link and some Googling, I've found a nice cafe (Dolores Park Cafe). A bit far away, but it seems worth a stretch of my legs!

Hanging out in San Fran,

Hanging out in San Fran, you'll be able to find all kinds of lesbian things to do.... especially in the Castro. Places worth checking out include Cafe Flore on Market, Charanga on Mission, and yes, the Dolores Park Cafe.

For more info I'd suggest you check the lesbian travel website, Girlports, for cafes and fun things to do in SF. Here's a place to start with: http://www.girlports.com/lesbiantravel/destinations/san_francisco/restau...

Happy travels!

I thought.....

I thought Castro is gay men's district. But I'll check out on those cafes. Actually, on the 12th, there's a gig by a singer song writer in Dolores Park Cafe....maybe very nice. Otherwise though, it seems pretty quiet in terms of events.

And, yes, Karman and Bridget went there, didn't they? I re-watched the episode to refresh my memory. They did a variety of things, some of which are out of my reach. The massage salon looks quite nice but expensive, too.

Thank you for your tips, ladies! I'm getting the ideas....

SF!

well castro is predominately the gay men's district but there are some great places there. Hot Cookie, is a GREAT cookie place with umm interestingly shaped baked treats. Harvey's a couple blocks down has the most amazing sweet potato fries and it's small and quaint with pretty good champagne lol. Poesia is another great restaurant in the castro too but its a bit pricier.

As for cafes, i usually hit up two. angel cafe on geary is an AWESOME place to go. When i'm headed to union square/civic center i usually stop there first. I also like to go to sunstream..it's a brazilian place..GREAT coffee it's strong and smooth and oh soo good.

I would recommend restaurants but I dont know what you're into or how much you wanna spend haha. But for a variety of tastes, head down to the Embarcadero. If you want italian head down to north beach.

Also a tip, if you're planning on travelling all around the city and don't wanna pay cab fare, you can buy a week pass for muni and you can basically use it for the metro and the buses all day any time as much as you want for that week.

Let me know any other questions you have I'll be happy to help out!

I did quite a bit of

I did quite a bit of sightseeing last time, so probably, I'd like to "investigate" Castro district this time. A week pass is a great idea...because I will go up and down Market Street connecting the financial district and Castro. I enjoy a variety of dish, except spicy/hot food. Last time, I ended up eating all of my evening meals at a Japanese restaurant near the Union Square! Lack of creativity and laziness on my part. :D Oh, I'm also interested in visiting an "open and affirming" church there. Thank you for your help!

well there's alot to

well there's alot to explore...castro is a good place to walk around and there's lots of restaurants and little shops there. as for churches i only know of the metro community church...and in sf there are many great japanese restaurants so you can never go wrong..lol

oh and i totally forgot to mention citizen cake! if you are in the civic center area...it's a great place for yummy treats...i guarentee it's worth it. it's only like 3 blocks from civic center park. there's also a nice restaurant there too. i HIGHLY recommend it..

SF

ok i'll make some suggestions in terms of food and libations.

if you're going to be in union square -- there's michael mina for high end.  bar crudo for amazing raw seafood...masa is another high end place.  on market near the big safeway is mecca, a cool sleek restaurant that has lesbian nights on thursdays -- there's a large bar in the center of the floor.  the crowd is a bit more cleaned up, think power lesbian....the antithesis of the lex in the mission.  another one of my favorites for high end is the ritz carlton dining room, ron sielgel is the executive chef there, i am a HUGE fan of his.  both mina and siegel are huge names in the sf dining scene.

i would second citizen cake, elizabeth falkner is cool and the desserts are delicious, if you want to go to another restaurant with a lesbian head chef, try jardiniere (also high end), if you want to check out jamie lauren of top chef's restaurant you can check out absinthe in hayes valley.  and yes they do serve absinthe.

for amazing sushi, i would only recommend one place and that is sushi ino, which i actually saw traci des jardin of jardiniere on a date there with a lady.  sushi nazi type place, tiny tiny little mom and pop sushi restaurant.

if you head into the castro, you can hang out in dolores park where there is tartine, an amazing bakery -- they make the BEST eclairs. ever.

then there's the farmer's market at the embarcadero -- blue bottle coffee is a must try, they have a kiosk in hayes valley, too.  i like hog island oyster there, great steamed clams, and oysters, etc.  boulette's larder is another lesbian owned place, really good breakfasts, think artisanal.

oh and cav wine bar and restaurant on market, close to the castro, a few doors down from zuni's cafe.  cav is yet another lesbian owned place.  awesome wines and the food is delicious.

there are a lot more, but that's what i came up with off the top of my head...hope you enjoy your return visit!

Wow, my list is getting

Wow, my list is getting longer! Thank you for introducing so many restaurants. Libations, I pass, because I don't drink (boring, I know). I wonder which restaurants are more suited for company of 1...also, I'm afraid my attire (casual with sneakers) as well as my purse would not go well with high end places. I'm looking for casual, personable and yet good food places. Do you necessarily see more lesbians in lesbian-owned restaurants?? I'd like to go to where lesbians hang out so that I can do people watch. ;)

I've listed up every place you ladies mentioned and am going to look them up on the web. A lot of (fun) work!

food sans libations

i think most restaurants in the city are good for people watching.  cav is fine for one, it's casual and the food is well prepared i think.  and yes there is a higher lesbian clientele i think -- i've been there a handful of times and each time i went, whether it was for an earlier dinner or later dinner, i definitely saw my fair share of lesbians.

over all i think sf is a very casual town, so with jeans and sneakers you'd be fine at citizen cake or even mecca.  mecca serves a full menu at the bar i think, so does cav. also, tartine is great for one, they have pressed sandwiches, and pastries, etc. and because the place is so busy, it's good for people watching especially during brunch/lunch time.  you can have lunch al fresco and watch all the people walk by...to and fro dolores park, etc. or just around town.  dolores park has lots o'lesbians walking around with their dogs...it's great in the summer time to just lay out with a book.  perhaps not so much in winter.  basically all the places i mentioned are fine for one maybe except for the super high end places like the dining room and michael mina...but even then one would be ok.

the best place..

the best place to find lesbians...is for sure dolores park...lesbians EVERYWHERE. so i agree with th1s0ne....if you wanna go lesbian watching dolores park cafe would be your best bet on any given day. if i may suggest some more...Chow is pretty good if you're looking for a super casual place...their cobbler...TO DIE FOR. Bocadillos is a great little tapas place so if you're looking for variety you can head there. I'd also head to Lime for brunch...their eggs benedict are yummy. I always go there because they have all you can drink mimosas...LOL.

as for mecca...it's a great place on certain days...the times i've gone there it's either really good or kinda ok...i'd recommend frisee over that...it's less about the drinks and more about the food in my opinion...and maybe head over to 2223 if you have time, they have specials on certain days so i'd check there too. all in all if you're looking for good eats in the castro..just walk up and down market towards church...there are good restaurants within a 3 block radius of market.

I've been checking on those

I've been checking on those cafes/restaurants, and most of them seem to need reservations beforehand....I could only do it a few hours before I go. Hopefully, it's not too late.. I'd be curious about bars, but don't feel like bringing myself quite up for the task! I think I now have enough places to fill my stomach for the duration of my stay few times over. Any interesting events in addition to the gig at Dolores cafe?
