Best lesbian songs/lyrics?

Best lesbian songs/lyrics?

What are the best songs to make you feel like a TOTAL lesbian when you listen to them?
What lyrics do you like that remind you of girls, crushes, relationships, sex, etc.?
(And please, anything but Katy Perry.)

My favorite right now, ever since that House MD promo with Olivia Wilde, is The Kills' "Cheap and Cheerful" - Alison Mosshart probably isn't gay, but she sings, "I want you to be crazy, 'cause you're boring, baby, when you're straight."

A few others:
Regina Spektor's "Somedays" - "I'm in love with your daughter, I wanna have her baby; I'm in love with your daughter, so can I please?" She sings those words so sweetly it makes me want to cry. She also does a song called "Raindrops" whose first lines are "You don't know, but that's okay; you might find me anyway, don't you know that I belong arm-in-arm with you, baby?" (It doesn't have anything to do with girls explicitly, but it reminds me of a girl I liked.)
Tracy Chapman's "Give Me One Reason" - Need I say more? It's Tracy Chapman. She's got the voice and the soul. And the 'girl, I don't need you' attitude.
Ladytron's "Sugar" - "If I give you sugar, will you give me something elusive and temporary?" Sounds like a fair trade to me, let's do it.
Sleater-Kinney's "Buy Her Candy - "Hey, don't you wanna run and call her name? If I buy her candy, will she know who I am?"

There are a few songs sung by men, too. You know how they're singing about a girl, and you're like "Man, I feel it, too." Those kinds of songs.
Jeff Buckley's "Lover, You Should've Come Over" - "It's never over! My kingdom for a kiss upon her shoulder... It's never over! All my riches for her smiles when I step so soft against her..." Damn girl problems, make me all teary-eyed.
And the Violent Femmes' "Add It Up". Gordon Gano (lead singer) sounds kind of androgynous, so it creates some solidarity. "Why can't I get just one kiss? Why can't I get just one kiss? Believe me, some things I wouldn't miss, but I look at your pants, and... I need a kiss!" Indeed, I do.

Those are mine. 'Bout you guys? They don't necessarily have to be songs by lesbian musicians. They just have to remind you of your sexuality.
(also, sorry if this isn't in the right forum... it kind of straddles "lesbian/bi musicians" and the general music forum.)

both hands

well heres a horrible cliche, but i have to list it: ani difranco's both hands

now use both hands
oh, no don't close your eyes
I am writing
graffitti on your body
I am drawing the story of
how hard we tried
I am watching your chest rise and fall
like the tides of my life,
and the rest of it all
and your bones have been my bedframe
and your flesh has been my pillow
I am waiting for sleep
to offer up the deep
with both hands

i pretty much heard this song, sighed, turned to my gay best friend and told him, holy crap i am so gay.  well i mean it could have been about a man too, but perhaps 'both hands' gives it away.  i downloaded most of her albums last year and pretty much love anything she write.

also patti smith's version of gloria:

until I look out the window, see a sweet young thing
humpin' on the parking meter, leanin' on the parking meter
oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling and then I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine
ooh I'll put my spell on her

here she comes
walkin' down the street
here she comes
comin' through my door
here she comes
crawlin' up my stair
here she comes
waltzin' through the hall
in a pretty red dress
and oh, she looks so good, oh, she looks so fine
and I got this crazy feeling that I'm gonna ah-ah make her mine

that makes me feel pretty gay too!

Untouchable Face, Ani

Untouchable Face, Ani Difranco, "Too bad you had to have a better half, shes not really my type, but I think you two are forever, and I hate to say it, but you're perfect together"

Romeo and Juliet, Indigo Girls. "Juliette, when we made love you used to cry.." siigh...

and what I think is uberest of uber gay songs, Drive, by Melissa Ferrick

"My hand is under there, holding you up, Ill hold you up, and drive you all night"

faerychild's picture

Romeo & Juliet

The was actually 'the song' for me and my first love, who died too young on April 22, 2001.  She would have been 25 that July.  It is so beautiful and heart-wrenching, and I still can't listen to it without tearing up...

Happiness is not the absence of sorrow...it is the absence of fear...

Almost anything by Hunter

Almost anything by Hunter Valentine. My favourite by them is "Staten Island Dream Tour"

"If it isn't Her" by Ani Difranco (it is a really obvious one to list but it is amazing)

"Rebel Girl" by the Bikini Kills

Tori Amos's cover of "Angie"

"Add it Up" was in Lost and Delirious so I always think of that when I hear it.

"Rebel, Rebel" makes me want to find an androgynous punk/glam rocker to be with

"Young Girl" and "Gypsy Rose Lee" by the Distillers both make me feel pretty gay listening to them.

It feels so inappropriate.....

but whenever I think of "A Whole New World" from Aladdin... I mean if you had never seen the movie, how could the "magic carpet ride" not get you laughing. And I dunno, whenever I hear it I just bam, lesbian mindset... Not that I don't have that all the time, but still.

okay, moving on from that... So many Garbage songs get me feeling pretty gay too.... Like, I mean obvious answers "Queer" and "Androgyny" Their song "Breaking Up The Girl" gets me too. Ohh... and "You Look So Fine" ... That song make me drool... Oh Shirley Manson... Why aren't you in my bed?

And before I list all the Garbage songs from their first three albums, I'll move on to K.D Lang singing "Hallelujah" her voice is just... mmmmm.... And finishing off, or I'll go on all night, I'll say about half of every Placebo song I've ever heard. Oh! and "Bridge Over Troubled Water" just because of a book I read one time....
Amanda Kay! :)'s picture

haha.. I love the Aladdin reference!

You are so right, dating a girl for the first time really IS a whole new world!

Aladdin)I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?
I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride
A whole new world
A new fantastic point of view
No one to tell us no
Or where to go
Or say we're only dreaming
(Jasmine)A whole new world
A dazzling place I never knew
But when I'm way up here
It's crystal clear
that now I'm in a whole new world with you
(Aladdin)Now I'm in a whole new world with you
(Jasmine)Unbelievable sights
Indescribable feeling
Soaring, tumbling, freewheeling
Through an endless diamond sky
(Jasmine)A whole new world
(Aladdin)Don't you dare close your eyes
(Jasmine)A hundred thousand things to see
(Aladdin)Hold your breath - it gets better
(Jasmine)I'm like a shooting star
I've come so far
I can't go back to where I used to be
(Aladdin)A whole new world
(Jasmine)Every turn a surprise
(Aladdin)With new horizons to pursue
(Jasmine)Every moment red-letter
(Both)I'll chase them anywhere
There's time to spare
Let me share this whole new world with you
(Aladdin)A whole new world
(Jasmine)A whole new world
(Aladdin)That's where we'll be
(Jasmine)That's where we'll be
(Aladdin)A thrilling chase
(Jasmine)A wondrous place
(Both)For you and me

Your skin makes me cry...

"If you could only see the way she loves me then maybe you would understand why I feel this way..."

- the awkwardness of loving someone your family doesn't like, not only because of the gay factor, but even personality... blech!-

"You say you love, but you don't..."

- mourning sociopathic bisexual mind-games and the fun that made it a game instead of torture.-

(Tonic, "If you could only See.." )

-Cliche and probably taken out of context!-

"There's no one left to finger... no one here to blame..."

-Gasp-BOLD!-

(Adia by Sarah Mclachlan)

"So don't tell me why he's never been good to you, don't tell me why he's never been there for you- don't you know that why is simply not good enough?

So just let me try, and I will be good to you, just let me try and I will be there for you... I'll show you why you're so much more than good enough..."

-mourning straight girls of yore...-

(Good Enough by Sarah Mclachlan)

Sarah McLachlan, you make me feel like a real-live lesbian.

"Bury me softly in this womb... oh I wanna be inside of you...I give this part of me for you... oh I wanna be inside of you... sand rains down and here I sit, holding rare flowers... oh I wanna be inside of you..."

-Um...is an explaination necessary...?-

"I have been guilty of kicking myself in the teeth..."

-Fucking up over and over and over...-

(Alice in Chains, Down in a Hole)

And the biggest one...

CREEP BY RADIOHEAD.

Every word of every sentence in that song is perfect.

During my fundamental stage of self-discovery, the realization of the fact that I was something my family and peers considered disgusting took its toll on me, and any girl unfortunate enough to be an object of my desire made me feel like such a CREEP, a WEIRDO, for having a crush on a wonderful girl. I didn't feel like I belonged around anyone who floats like a feather in a beautiful world, haha...

Despite all my gayness... I would totally date Thom Yorke for emotional support.

Rough Trade

For those of us of a certain age (and Canadian) this was the first real queer song on the radio. Yeah, it's a little dated (just like me), but the cheese factor is great (also llike me).

One that I like

The one that sticks out in my mind is "Iowa" by Dar Williams. Don't know if it counts, but it always has seen lesbian-ish to me: "I have never had a way with women, but the fields of Iowa make me wish that I could...."

I'm such a romantic...

Me Too as sung by Anne Murray

Do you ever stop and think of me
As more than a friend,
I was wondering
And when you met me did your knees get weak
Did your feelings cave in,
Just like mine did?
Did you find it hard to speak
Were you stumbling over simple words,
Did it do that to you?
Me too.

Did you ever have a sleepless night,
Wanting me near,
I was wondering...
Did you ever watch the ship sail by
and then disappear and
fade into nothing

And do you ever have regrets
That you passed up what was best for you?
Me too...

If there ever was a moment,
Would you tell me now?
That you were sure I was the one to share your life...
Would you take a chance and finally
Say what's in your heart?
Would you help me tear this wall apart?

And do you ever have regrets
That you passed up what was best for you?
Me too...oh me too...

You're My Best Friend by Queen

I know that it's not a lesbian song, but every time I here that song I just think of Freddie Mercury singing to a guy that he was in love with. : "Your the best friend that I ever had; I've been with you such a long time; Your my sunshine; And I want you to know that my feelings are true; I really love you; Ahh, your my best friend" It just seems so romantic to me and it makes me feel all warm and bubbly inside.

Sure, this probably isn't how the song is supposed to be interpreted, but the beauty is that I can draw my own conclusions, haha...

Michelle Branch If Only She Knew

I don't know whose side I'm takin'
But I'm not takin' things too well
I can see inside you're achin'
But is it still too early for me to tell?

I try to let it go
but I don't know if I can take it
'Cause the way you looked at me
Made me see that I can't really fake it

Cause I still love you like I did before

I know for sure

That you still feel the same way I do

If only she knew

Set me free, leave me be.  I don't want to fall another moment into your gravity.

"Because the Night" - the version by 10,000 Maniacs. Natalie Merchant has this voice that I can't put in words.

"Come on now, try and understand
The way I feel under your command
Take my hand as the sun doth set,
They can't hurt you now,
can't hurt you now,
can't hurt you now...
Because the night belongs to lovers,
Because the night belongs to lust
Because the night belongs to lovers,
Because the night belongs to us..."

Where I Stood, They Weren't There, Ten Days, The Special Two...

Yeah, basically any song by Missy Higgins. :P Basically, these songs aren't even definitely about a relationship with a woman (although Missy Higgins is bisexual, and I just feel it in my bones whenever I listen to these songs that she was possibly having girl troubles, hahaha) but even still, I relate them to my relationship with my ex-girlfriend, and where we are now, and the decisions we've made and blah blah blah... Yeah.

Some excerpts:

"Where I Stood" -
Cause I don't know who I am,
Who I am, without you,
All I know is that I should,
And I don't know if I could stand
Another hand upon you,
All I know is that I should,
Cause she will love you, more than I could
She who dares to stand where I stood.

"They Weren't There" -
So now I will be waiting
For the world to hear my song,
So they can tell me I was wrong,
But they weren't there beneath your stare,
And they weren't stripped til they were bare,
Of any bindings from the world outside that room...
And they weren't taken by the hand,
And led through fields of naked land,
Where any preconceived ideas were blown away,
So I couldn't say, "No."

"Ten Days" -
Cause baby, time has changed
Nothing at all,
You're still the only one that feels like home.
And I've tried cutting the ropes, I let you go
But you're still the only one that feels like home,
Yeah, you're still the only one that feels like home,
You're still the only one I've got at all.

"The Special Two" -
I step outside my mind's eyes, for a minute,
And I look over me like a doctor looking for disease,
Or something that could ease the pain,
But nothing cures the hurt you,
You bring on by yourself,
Just remembering, just remembering, how we were...
When we would only need each other, we'd bleed together,
These hands would not be taught to hold another's,
We were the special two.
And we could only see each other, we'd bleed together,
These arms would not be taught to need another's,
Cause we're the special two...

Kinda Cliche, but...

If It Isn't Her - Ani DiFranco

Under Your Spell (from the musical episode of buffy XD)

Ever Fallen In Love With Someone - The Buzzcocks

Time After Time - Cyndi Lauper (I have no idea why!)

Power Of Two, Joking, Closer To Fine, Least Complicated - Indigo Girls

Guardian Angel - Red Jumpsuit Apparatus (mainly because I first heard this song on an amv for Lost And Delirious, and it made both me and my friend Leon cry)

How d'ya like that? - Voodoo Hussy

And of course, the ultimate lesbian sex song, Drive - Melissa Ferrick

I love Indigo Girls <3 Power of two is amazig

Here in Italy there are some lesbian songs. One of my favourite is Resta come sei (stay as you are) - Dolcenera. She speaks about a girl who was fell in love with her best friend, and she was scared. So the singer answer her: You shouldn't be afraid. the refrain is:

Resta come sei è la tua vita (stay as you are, it's your life)
Non cambiare mai è la tua sfida (Nevere change it, it's your challenge)
Resta come sei tu sai amare (stay as you are, you know how to love)
Non cambiare mai Non fai del male (never change it, you don't make any evil)
Non fai del male! (you don't make any evil)

However in the song there are many important phrase. I love that song.

I hope my translation is good...And hope it make sense (lol)

Her song "secret" is about a time when she was in love with a girl but the girl wasn't out.  She wanted to tell everyone how in love she was, but she couldn't and they had to hide their relationship and sneak around.  It is one of my favorite songs by Missy.  Here are the lyrics..

You were from the North, I was from the South
We were form opposite places, different towns
But I knew it was good and you knew it was too
So we moved together like a ball and chain
Minds becoming two halves of the same
It was real, but in shadows it grew

Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?

I would've shouted loud and broken through
I would've given it all to belong to you
But there were different plans, different rules
You said "where I'm from there is a lock and key
If you'd be so kind as to follow me
I will show you the way to the rest of my sins"

Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?
Yeah you, you got a secret don't ya babe?
And I should know
Yeah I should know

So this room was damp where your sins laid
There was that smell in the air of an old place
That hadn't seen much daylight in years
And you threw me down, said, "If ya don't mind
I'm gonna leave you here until night time
Then we can do what we want my baby out of the spotlight."

Cos you've got a secret don't ya babe?
Yeah you, you got a secret don't ya babe?
And I should know
Yeah I should know
For I'm your secret aren't I babe?
Yeah I'm your secret aren't I babe?
Aren't I babe?

Nicest Thing by Kate Nash

I heard this a while ago and immediately fell in love. It's about longing and reminds me of someone I used to know very well.

All I know is that you're so nice,

You're the nicest thing I've seen.

I wish that we could give it a go,
See if we could be something.

I wish I was your favourite girl,
I wish you thought I was the reason you are in theworld.
I wish I was your favourite smile,
I wish the way that I dressed was your favouritekind of style.

I wish you couldn't figure me out,
But you always wanna know what I was about.
I wish you'd hold my hand when I was upset,
I wish you'd never forget the look on my face whenwe first met.

I wish you had a favourite beauty spot that youloved secretly,
'Cos it was on a hidden bit that nobody else couldsee.
Basically, I wish that you loved me,
I wish that you needed me,
I wish that you knew when I said two sugars, actually I meant three.

I wish that without me your heart would break,
I wish that without me you'd be spending the restof your nights awake.
I wish that without me you couldn't eat,

I wish I was the last thing on your mind beforeyou went to sleep.

Under Your Spell

This is from the musical Buffy episode, Once More With Feeling, where Tara sings a love song to Willow.

It's sung by Amber Benson, who plays Tara

I lived my life in shadow
Never the sun on my face
It didn't seem so sad, though
I figured that was my place
Now I’m bathed in light
Something just isn't right

I’m under your spell
How else could it be
Anyone would notice me?
It's magic, I can tell
How you set me free
Brought me out so easily

I saw a world enchanted
Spirits and charms in the air
I always took for granted
I was the only one there
But your power shone
Brighter than any I’ve known

I’m under your spell
Nothing I can do
You just took my soul with you
You worked your charm so well
Finally, I knew
Everything I dreamed was true

You made me believe

The moon to the tide
I can feel you inside

I’m under your spell
Surging like the sea
Wanting you so helplessly
I break with every swell
Lost in ecstasy
Spread beneath my willow tree

You make me com-plete (x4)

Only Straight Girls Wear Dresses by CWA

It's about this girl who reads 'only straight girls wear dresses' in a bathroom stall, and then goes out into the bar and finds the girl who wrote it.

"I left the ladies lounge in a cloud of perfume

when I saw the same gal who vandalized the bathroom

she looked at me from across her foamy brew

checked out my hot pants and fancy hair-do

I saw a spark of interest in her half closed eyes

so I moseyed over to her feeling sex between my thighs."

A few more suggestions

Love all the suggestions so far.

I thought of:

The classic:  "There's a Girl," by the Ditty Bops.

Also, "Leah" and "Cyanide and Cynammon," by Rachael Sage (although she has others that work too) are clearly about women.

There is Jill Sobule's "I kissed a Girl" (which existed before the Katy Perry song.)

"Grey" By Ani Difranco also comes to mind, but it is less obvious.

PsychDyke's picture

I kissed a girl and her

I kissed a girl and her lips were sweet.

And I may do it again...  (Since I've seen her twice at the Michigan Women's Music Festival, I assume she kept kissing girls.)  That's a real song.  She doesn't give a damn what her boyfriend might think about it.  (Stupid Katy Perry)

I'VE A FIRE AND IT'S SPREADING LIKE MADNESS

'CAUSE I'M STEEPED IN THIS PLEASURE
I SNAPPED FROM MY TETHER
THE FOUNDATION MAY VIBRATE APART
AND YOU LEAD ME AGAIN TO THE BACK OF THE LINE AND WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START

WELL THE DISHES ARE BROKEN AND THE KITCHEN'S A MESS
I'M TRAPPED IN THE DOORWAY DON'T YOU MAKE ME CONFESS
'CAUSE IT'S BASE AND DELICIOUS TO JUST KEEP YOU GUESSING
WHAT ETHER IT IS THAT IGNITES ME

'CAUSE I'M STEEPED IN THIS PLEASURE
AND I SNAPPED FROM MY TETHER
THE FOUNDATION MAY VIBRATE APART
AND YOU LEAD ME AGAIN TO THE BACK OF THE LINE AND WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START
YES WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START

'CAUSE I'M STEEPED IN THIS PLEASURE
AND I SNAPPED FROM MY TETHER
THE FOUNDATION MAY VIBRATE APART
AND YOU LEAD ME AGAIN TO THE BACK OF THE LINE AND WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START

WELL INSTINCT IS DIRTY AND MORALITY'S CLEAN
AND WE'RE BOUND FOR DAMNATION SAY THOSE MAGAZINES
WELL TO HELL WITH THE SORROW AND WATERED-DOWN SCENES
WE'LL BURN US A BRIDGE STRAIGHT TO HEAVEN

'CAUSE I'M STEEPED IN THIS PLEASURE
AND I SNAPPED FROM MY TETHER
THE FOUNDATION MAY VIBRATE US APART
AND YOU'LL LEAD ME AGAIN TO THE BACK OF THE LINE AND WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START

YES WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START
YES WE'LL WORK OUR WAY SLOW TO THE START

Okay, I don't know that it's gay, but damn..

Joan Jett

Virtually anything by Joan Jett reminds me of my sexuality - she is the hottest woman alive, I just melt when I see her, and it was standing in the front row, just in front of her, when I finally decided to embrace my sexuality, which I had been dancing around for some time...seeing her actually changed my life and was a defining moment in my realising my true identity...

Go here to see 'Kiss on the Lips'...when a woman like Joan sings 'kiss on the lips', guess where my mind goes?...*gasp* could she actually mean that? ;) Such a lesbian song! Enough to make any girl weak at the knees...

I never listen to things they say, cos what you hear gets in your way (Joan Jett)
