Lesbian/Bisexual characters on Australian television
Recently i've been thinking about Australian Television and the lack of Lesbian/Bisexual characters on Australian shows. There have/are only a few Lesbian/bisexual characters on Australian televison throughout the years or the ones we know that have lesbian subtext and we all wish that the writers would decide to write in Lesbian/Bisexual characters. I can only name a few shows that have Lesbian/Bisexual characters and the ones that have Lesbian subtext or the ones we wish had at least one lesbian/bisexual character, i'm just going to name the shows that have Lesbian/Bisexual characters/Lesbian subtext and if anybody can think of any other Australian shows.
Breakers - aired in 1998 - 1999 i didn't even know that this show existed until a couple months back, but than again i was just a kid in the 90's, of course it wasn't on the air for long. it starred Louise Crawford(Lucy) and Gabriella Maselli(Kelly), you can watch the clips between Kelly and Lucy on youtube http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=RDTQ8YXExLU. Their relationship didn't seem to last that long, but it was good while it lasted. If your watching the clips like i was and you think that Kelly(Gabriella Maselli) looks familar, you've probably seen her in several commercials or other shows/movies like ads for Continental and that Harpic ad with the group of women who are visting the one who just had the baby, she was also in an episode of McLeods Daughters, Oh and the girl that Kelly tutors is Emily Perry (Zoe/Eve) from Home and Away.
Home and Away - Remember back in episodes 3880 -3954, i dont remember the exact year think it may have been 2005, Zoe McCallister/Eve Jacobson(Emily Perry, she also starred in Breakers) or better known as 'The Summer Bay Stalker'. Do you also remember Sarah Lewis aka Psycho Sarah, Before Eve became Zoe she was working as a nurse at a psychiatric institution when she broke all the rules by falling in love with a patient, "Psycho Sarah" who she helped escaped so she could avenge the death of a deceased boyfriend, Sarah Lewis died when Noah Lawson died, thats when Eve became Zoe wanting her revenge on the residents of Summer Bay. Since then there hasnt been any lesbian/bisexual characters. You can check out http://www.backtothebay.net and read episode summaries from when the show first started 20 years ago, watch episodes etc. or go to http://www.summerbayjournal.com
Out of the Blue - To be really honest i don't think it airs on Australian televison, but you can watch scenes with Peta and Poppy on youtube http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=mi9EsXwH4_g.
All Saints - Dr Charlotte Beaumont, need i say more, but it would be nice if she actually had a love life.
Neighbours - Apparently there is a Bisexual character, i don't watch the show, so i'm not sure.
Kick - Layla and Jackie, where did they meet: Fencing Practice. Layla is a Muslim-Australina who lives with her conservative family and is unenthusiastically engaged to be married to a man named Sharif. But when she falls in love with fellow-fencer Jackie, she has to choose between following her heart or making her family happy.you can watch clips between them on youtube. http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=OrhuZthaV-8
Now the shows we wish had lesbians/bisexauls
McLeods Daughters - who doesnt like watching a group of women run a farm, getting dirty, wearing wife beaters and occasionally blowing things up, there was definately some chemistry between kate and Jodi, i can't forget Stevie or Clare or Tess.
Blue Heelers - Remember the days when Jo Parrish and Tess Gallagher were always at each others throats (that was before Jo was killed in the Station house bombing) now that i think about it there was something going on there. Or when Maggie Doyle graced the screen way before she was shot.
Rush - Don't know about anyone else, but i certaintly wish there was something going on between the three female characters, what's not hot about a woman wielding a gun, unless its pointed at you.
Thats all i can think of, anybody care to share, feel free.
EDIT: After some research into Lesbian/Bisexual characters on Aussie television i came across a few more Australian shows that had either a Lesbian or Bisexual character:
- Water Rats
- Stingers
- A Secret Life of Us (according to my research it was very brief)
- Last Man Standing (minor characters)
- Prisoner (or as it was called when screened in the UK Prisoner: Cell Block H.)You can watch full episodes of this on youtube from the very beginning through to the final season http://au.youtube.com/view_play_list?p=D65619510200F3CB
- Pacific Drive (I have confirmed that it did have a lesbian/bisexual character)
8 November Edit: i have recently discovered more shows with Lesbian/Bisexual characters on Australian televison:
- Number 96
- The Box
- Skyways.(late 1970s, The lesbian character in this show was apparently wicked and i would rather not say how she died in the show)
- Something to Sing About (the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Choir) and Positive Art (HIV/AIDS and its impact on gay culture)These two were documentarys.
12 March 2009 Edit: A lot of stuff is happening on Australian Televison, i mean wow, Home and Away, Out of The Blue - not sure what is happening there, Satisfaction is in its second season. If you want to know more about what's happening on Home and Away check out Karman's article.
27 March Edit: I should have mentioned in my last edit that Out of the blue airs sundays 5:30pm on Network 10. Home and Away airs 7:00pm on Channel 7 or if you can watch it on youtube http://www.youtube.com/Bunyip11
