For those over 50: What job did you find the most exciting?I was wondering what to add as a first topic to this brand new tag (hopefully, it will soon be full of other member's topics). My greatest curiousity at the moment, and my question for other Over 50 AE members is: what job did you find the most exciting, of the work you've done? My most exciting job was summer work in boreal forest and lakes with geological mapping crews. I am not a geologist and was a "go-fer" for the geologist who was doing the mapping. We worked in small crews and lived in tent camps. Our work was to navigate the day's hike (which was from five to eight miles) with a compass. The adrenalin rush from physical challenges like walking a portage in the dark (the canoe had been left at the other end) was part of the appeal. There was also the surprises such as coming across the beauty of fireflys at the end of the walk in the dark. There are experiences I never would have had without this job which required that we walk a relatively straight compass line through all kinds of terrain for the geologist to produce a map of the area. We walked on floating muskeg (bog, swamp) and came across large ferns by creeks. I, also, will probably never again have the experience of being the only human being for miles around. This happened for a mere hour when a helicopter dropped me off on a lakeshore to wait for my partner. During the summers, we saw moose, bears, a wolf, mostly from a distance. Do I still take part in challenging outdoor activity? I live near a lake, where as children, my sister and I rowed a little boat my father built for us. Now, in winter I cross-country ski across the lake and still use a boat on it, in the summer. I hope to have an easy challenge sometime in the next two summers in a short, no rapids (maybe one portage) all women canoe trip. I hope other Over 50 AE members will tell us about their own most exciting job. My exciting job was mainly a physical challenge, but exciting jobs (including raising children) could also be socially, economically, politically, intellectually or creatively challenging.

My exciting job...
None yet
I've yet to find a job that really excites me. I've worked as a legal secretary for my whole working life, but circumstances may be forcing me in another direction. My boss just became a judge, so I'll be looking for employment in the new year. The government here has a program called Second Careers, where they will subsidize unemployed people to get training in a different type of career and I have been looking at something more "hands on" like one of the trades.
Better late than never.
Pet Sitting
I've just begun a new job as a professional pet sitter and really like it so far. I have always had a love for animals and nature. So finally after all of these years I might have hit upon something that I can be happy with.
Interesting! Mine are rather boring by comparison
I do love my current work as an adjudicator of unemployment compensation claims. The stories run from typical to rather wild, and I set there and pull out pertinent facts, ask questions that can get surreal (did you call her the 'c' word, did you pee in the bushes...) and then I follow up talking with their employer about these things.

Teaching overseas was my favorite job
so far, all I ever really talk about when I talk about "old jobs", was my teaching English in Switzerland, and doing my art/painting/showings in the same time span.
It was a very exciting time to be alive, in general. However, I like the teaching job I have now: teaching adult ed./GED and computer skills. I have a lot of fun with the students.
I sing, perform at church functions and have created my own CD with my life/musical partner.
In all, life has been awesome and exciting.
Is your CD available on some website?
Hi Babs,
I have deleted my comments regarding the Anne Murray images you were using for your account picture when I made the comments. I wish you the best with your singing and artwork. Where could one get a hold of a copy of the CD you created?
hi annieb
that 7 post overload was too much! LOL
we are trying to reactivate our webpage, and as soon as we get it up again you can view it. i want to tell you that it's all very eclectic, flute/guitar/ music. many find it meditative. we call ourselves Flowering Sage. we've recently added a third woman, a percussionist.
i am still in love with anne murray, but as you can see by my new profile photo, i'm very fickle. her name is missy higgins from "down under". an utterly, delightful, adorable "i'm bi-sexaual, but i'm with women now" kind of singer/songwriter. will get back to you.
not often I reply to myself, but...
I've switched back to my anne murray profile.
Missy Higgins, although, exciting, creative, talented and GORGEOUS, is just not my number one crush.
Nothing like a few years under your belt......<smile>
And thanks to Harpy, my seven post over the line, sweet Mary embarrasment is gone. poof. magic.
