Do you ever eavesdrop on other peoples conversations on Public Transport?

Of course you do. I think it's sometimes impossible not to. I've started to notice lately (mainly due to the fact that my brother broke my iPod) more and more how weird/disturbing some people really are, due to what they talk about on buses/tubes/trains etc.

For example, I was on the tube in London the other day, and I overheard a man saying to his friend:
"If I had a pound for every time a battery was thrown at me!"
Very strange indeed.

Another one that made me laugh was something 2 guys were singing on the train in Brighton last week:
"We're here, We're Queer, We hate Germaine Greer!"

Then there was the old woman on the bus on the way to college:
"Jasper likes jumping out of windows, don't you?"

What strange/random/frightening/disturbing things have you overheard on the wonders that is Public Transport?

Yes

I tried not to listen but it just happen, one day was in the subway and over heard a conversation between two guys and one I told his friend that he was going to break up with his girlfriend because he was sleeping with her sister. That is not the only thing I heard and saw in the subway their has been some freaky stuff I heard and some freaky things people done and really doesn't surprise me.

I know that I'm probably

I know that I'm probably very nosy, but I love eavesdropping on juicy or bizarre conversations on the train to and from college.

There are three women who must work in the same place who always get on together at the same carriage as me, and they all have the really strong Northside Dublin accent and manner of speaking that make even their most mundane conversations hilarious and interesting.

For instance once they were talking about food and comparing the different brands of minced meat and even though it should have been the most boring conversation ever, I was splitting my sides listening to them.

Another time I remember a conversation between a two college kids about a guy on their course who was covered in tattoos with a really weird haircut and he was apparently a total psycho.... I also heard a really interesting debate about feminism between an American girl and a seemingly gay guy.

I know it's bad but I love eavesdropping!

overshare on bus

My gf and i were once travelling back from London to Oxford when we realised that there was some sort of porno going on behind us! i mean i'm all for people getting in on but that's just NASTY on a bus! GET A FRIGGEN ROOM!!!! needless to say we moved and didn't know where to put our heads....though i had a good idea a little town down south was being visited on the back row!

games you can play on the tube

m y personal favourite is, i guess, a borderline racist game as it involves when you have you have your headphones and you try and guess where people are from just by looking at them and the way they act.
I have to say the amount of times i have recognised Americans on the tube in London is unbelievable, imaybe i have an 'american'dar...!

i do love listening into people's convos, especially if they're in another language, first i'll try and guess where they're from and if they're in french or hebrew i'll just listen!

i often start chatting to people on the tube! tis fun! i know it's the big taboo but it makes the journey into town so much more interesting!

american-ness

ok so what sets of the america-dar?  what gives us away?  im curious =)

oh and i totally listen to people when im commuting to and from work on bart (the subway).  ive seen people smoke out of a bong on bart.  everything goes its funny.

calgoldenbears's picture

bart!

oh i miss the bay area...

i'd like to know what gives us americans away as well.  a spanish friend of mine tried to imitate an "american" and all she did was snap her gum and say "like."  but there must be more to us than that! hahaha

annampatton's picture

i know!

i had friends from stratford-upon-avon in england and they would talk like cowboys...silly.  oh and GO BEARS!
calgoldenbears's picture

annampatton's picture

hell yeah

i go to all the games!  i went to ucla but i was totally raised a bear, and i did a visiting semester there...i love that school.  i have to admit i am still not fully recovered from the osu game last year...

Yeah, people do that on the bus on the way home from college. Worst part is it's usually guys from my college =/ The drivers tend to either not notice at all, or stop the bus completely and kick everyone off lol!

lol

i get the same bus every day, and even though 99.9999% of the time i have my ipod on me, there's still some blatantly weird people who get on this bus.

for instance, there's this old man who always gives me polos. i don't think he understands how ear phones work either, cos he consistantly tries to talk to me even though ive got wires hanging out my ears and i'm obviously in no way listening.

i haven't seen him in a few weeks actually. he better not have died or something :S

school bus

on my way to school i listen to people all the time and eventually get enough information to black mail them if i want to because the last thing high school girls worry about is how loud they are talking and i found out they think that half the female population at school is gay because they don't skip from one guy to anouther as fast as them. but sometimes there are really strange people on the bus and they talk about disterbing stuff

Oh Air pollution...

The local teenagers when I go to get my ice cream fix. I want to shoot them but smile and look away.

The conversations they have, I can't stand it!

When I am lucky, I go to the local bookstore (independently owned) and hear a sexy conversation about the life and styles of Mark Twain or what was Plato teaching. I want to join in sometimes but I might look like a crazy person.

"What!?! You are discussing Mark Twain!!!" *foams at mouth* lol

That and I get crazy when they dicuss anime or manga, I find myself joining in and have 10 minutes conversations with strangers about the wonders of anime, true story.

ladydawn's picture

...

Brackishtea, I could never imagine you having long conversations with a person about anime ;) It wouldn't have happened to take place at a bookstore would it? lol

Get lost in my own little world and tune everyone out

Blondes rules

and the rest of you girls

want to drool all over us! LOL

otek's picture

um..

brackishtea, i'm a teenage girl and i'd rather have a conversation about Mark Twain or manga rather than "who hooked up with who at so and so's party and omg I think he likes me" however I think i'm a rare breed. Whenever I try to have a deeper discussion with one of my freinds that goes beyond parties/boys/booze/boys/hooking up or boys I get looked at like I have two heads. I saw a homeless guy on the train the other day and I think he had tourettes. These people where making fun of him. And people also seem to think the person who serves you at the supermarket is deaf. Oh the things i've heard working on till.
LolaRay's picture

Always

Plenty of people eavesdrop; that's why sites like www.overheardinnewyork.com were founded, lol.

Oddest conversation I ever heard was a girl justifying to this guy about how it's ok that she's cheating on her bf with him because he was cheating on her with this other girl, and the guy agreed saying that she (the girl who was previously talking) cheated on him plenty of times, and how he was cheating on his gf as they spoke.

...or at least I think that's how it went. All I really remember is that there was a helluva lot of cheating involved.

There isn't much for public

There isn't much for public transport where I live... but I listen to other peoples' conversations pretty much everywhere. I figure if they're having a conversation loud enough for me to hear while I'm minding my own business, then it's not really considered eavesdropping. ;)
