News, Reviews & Commentary on Lesbian and Bisexual women in Entertainment and the Media

Johnny we thought we knew ye

Not much in politics surprises me these days.....this one threw me for a loop.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Former U.S. Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards has admitted to having had an extramarital affair with a woman he met in a New York City bar in 2006, ABC News reported on Friday.

ABC said an interview with Edwards would be broadcast later on Friday on the network's show "Nightline."

According to the ABC News Internet site, "Edwards told ABC News correspondent Bob Woodruff he did have an affair with 44-year-old Rielle Hunter, but said that he did not love her."

The woman subsequently was hired by an Edwards political action committee to produce documentaries, according to the report, which did not directly quote Edwards.

The report also said Edwards, 55, denied he fathered the woman's baby girl.

Edwards, whose wife Elizabeth is suffering from incurable cancer, pulled out of the Democratic race for president earlier this year. During his campaign, he denied that he had an extramarital affair.

His name had been mentioned as a possible vice presidential running mate for Democratic candidate Barack Obama.

Politically shock-proof.

After the bombshell dropped earlier this year by my then NY governor Elliot Spitzer...that the man who went after prostitution rings was a regular customer of prostitution rings...and that he tried to get the most bang for his buck (so to speak as he seemed to be more about quantity than quality)...and that knocked me for a loop...I think I am now shock-proof when it comes to US politicians.

At least Edwards admitted it was all about his ego.

not to be blunt but....

now it seems to me that if u want to be in politics u have to have an affair. like some form of initiation. although u really don't need to be initiated since ur already in the political arena somewhat or somehow. but still.... *rolls eyes*.... yeah m going to stop before i start lol. :).

Figures

I think Edwards is kind of a jerk for running for president after he had an affair. He had to know that these things almost never stay quiet for long and it probably would've ruined the Democratic chances had he got the nomination. This country does not take adultery in politics lightly. I'm just glad this came out before the VP was officially announced.

I was not entirely

I was not entirely surprised.  There's always been something about him I just didn't care for.  I do agree with Tess in that, not only is it unforgivable that he did this to his wife during her cancer treatment, he also did this knowing that if he became the nominee, we'd be in terrible shape right about now.  And by we, I mean Democrats.

Just don't lie about it

I've become sort of numb to affairs and to other private life events of a candidate.

Everyone assumes that Bush has done plenty in his life that is reprehensible.  People still voted him into office; because no one would talk about it.  It was all speculation but the proof stayed private.  I'm not a big Bush fan but I think that's how politicians should deal with their private life. Let others know it's none of their business.

Then there's David A. Paterson.  Who, after the Spitzer ordeal, decided to tell all his business.  He assumed everyone was going to dig for it, so why not tell it.

McCain wrote a book about the crap he did.  He's still the nominee.

I would have been cool with Edwards; if his wife forgave him then it's a done deal.  But, he had to lie about it.  That's crap especially after he said that his private life was the people's business; and he would be open about his private life.

But, I've become sort of numb to lying polititicans.  I've come to expect it.

I agree with you. Patterson

I agree with you. Patterson is a great example of someone who told the truth and the talk ended. We've already had a president who lied to up for the past 7 1/2 years and one who nearly destroyed the democratic party while in office because of lies before that. Of course, lying about reasons for war and covering up reasons not to go to war is murder and lies about sex are just stupid.
