Fantasy Soccer - English Premier League, 2008/09

hi gals

for anybody out there who follows English Premiership football (i.e. soccer to our US friends!), this is an open invitation to join the Barclays Fantasy Football league this season.

i've set up the 'AfterEllen All Stars' - all you have to do is register online at

 http://fantasy.premierleague.com/

then go to 'Leagues' on the left hand column, and go to the 'join a private league' section.  submit the code 76371-133945 and that shold enable you to join us!

you can then build your team (up to 15 players, max value £100m), with no more than 3 players from one English team (e.g. Liverpool, Arsenal, the mighty Tottenham Hotspur); you can change it as many times as you like before the season starts on 16th August 08, and thereafter make one free transfer (up to the value of an existing player) per week.

there's also a forum for witty banter/boasting/moaning, so feel free to add your tuppence-worth to it!

here's to another exciting season - and COME ON YOU SPURS!!

Woo. But I suck.

I'm off to sort out a team and join now. I'm going to demolish you all. And by 'demolish' I mean lose, badly.
I don't care who wins the league this year, as long as it's not Scum U, because I can't stand them.
And just to end on a happy note, I got my Barnsley season ticket today, WOO!

Scottish football

i'll have you know that my love of Spurs is based on some very solid principles:

  • Steve Archibald (Scottish player, from Aberdeen then went on to Barcelona) was a great scorer for them, just when i started to get into football
  • Osvaldo Ardiles and Ricardo Villa, both great Argentinian players, are Spurs legends; the fact that they were from a country Margaret Thatcher had effectively declared war on (remember the Falkland Islands, anybody?) made this anti-conservative lefty gal warm to them even more
  • my best pals in London are all Gooners (i.e. Arsenal fans), and being the black sheep i couldn't just follow them - plus it gives our relationships a great amount of good-natured ribbing
  • i really like the royal blue shorts they wear.  and when you're 12 and deciding your team, that's really important
  • Ayr United (my home team) are mired in the middle of the Scottish second division; they're never going to get into Europe, unless it's on their summer holidays

i rest my case.

PS  don't even START me about Scottish international football either - i go to all the home Hampden games, masochist that i am.  it's like my brother says: it's not the disappointment that kills you, it's the hope.....  roll on the World Cup qualifiers for some more self-flagellation!

Mullet Lover!

Go on admit it, you're a mullet lover! .....

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1KEMMfV5-Qg

Oh!!!

fairly butch's picture

i think you'll find that

i think you'll find that Suzi Quattro with mullet, followed by Andy Cameron singing "Ally's Tartan Army",  plus a 19-year-old Kate Bush singing "Wuthering Heights" from 1978 trumps Hoddle & Waddle any time........

 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4UPZCfV1uvM&NR=1

i still remember collecting my World Cup Argentina '78 stickers in a Panini album...sigh...those were the days!   and when Archie Gemmill scored that goal against Holland, it didn't matter that we'd just been beaten by Peru and drawn with Iran; all that mattered was that we were beating the 'total football' team of the Dutch:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1axsnMRbbo

it's so frustrating being a Scotland football fan - how can we beat France home and away and still not manage to qualify for competitions?  just nobody mention the Faroe Islands........or Estonia!

hope y'all enjoy the season, and the Fantasy Football competition!

'Kappa Kappa EM Pi' on top!

I noticed there was a Paddy O'Scouser waiting to go onto the league this week – nice one!

Liverpool have been neglecting our Celtic heritage of late but now we’ve got Robbie as well as Finnan things are looking good [oh please dear lord and all de saints ‘n’ angels in heaven!]

First out of the blocks and on top (!) was the team 'Kappa Kappa EM Pi', who probably also gets best team name – I like to think I might get 2nd with ‘Cathy Shim’s Fan’ (in my ‘umble opinion!) ... erh ... not criticising or anything, but you can change your team name at any time, don’tcha know!

Try going on the ‘Forum’ and posting an anti-Chelsea comment ... Rachel19 is really easy to wind up! I thing I’ve already excessively irritated Fairly Butch ... she aint bitin’ no more!

Here’s to the craic! And ...

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XNboU_PbZMY

... @ 1:50:- "I've never seen anything like this Liverpool crowd. On the field here, the gay and inventive ferocity they show is quite stunning" ... I rest my case, m’lud!

I'm quite endeared by that

I'm quite endeared by that new name! Cheers

I squeezed 3 of my best reds into the squad. Fingers crossed they do the business for me and my co manager Rafa!

So Chelsea is a 'Touche' subject hahaaaa well I shall bear that in mind, I've points to catch up on seeing as I missed the first game week!

Looking forward to some banter and an enjoyable season.

Play on

Well I'm a week late but better late than never!

Didn't do too bad W1, though can't same the same for the wonderful boys in blue! The original ones meaning Everton of course. We'll come good though so I'm not too worried!?!

Liverpool fan

New to the fantasy game, but I've set up a team and joined your league. just thought I'd say hi and it's great to see some football fans.

The Pool making a big splash

Come on the pool! Is there a red flavoured scouse majority in the league?
ice cream's picture

Im sure ive dropped but omg

Im sure ive dropped but omg Fulham Beat Arsenal! OMG! hahaha  Spurs lost again! Damn liverpool with their minor wins

Zorillo's picture

Pah

Minor wins haaa the cheek of you, hard fought and class showed in the end, more like it.

Total shocker that Arsenal result.

angel74's picture

Gutted

Cant believe my gunners couldn't beat Fulham, just hoping that Pompey can turn it around and stuff Man U tommorow. Plus well done to my home town club Hull City great draw at Blackburn.

ice cream's picture

Ah Chelsea were rubbish but

Ah Chelsea were rubbish but unlike Arsenal we got 3 points, Deco was a bargain

lozzy150's picture

Come on the blues

A win for everton, top of the league and manchester pride- what a weekend!!! I'm pretty sure it won't last for both myself and the toffees, but I'll enjoy it whilst it lasts.

Z's picture

So Goin’ Down!

Look sweetie (!) Everton are so going down this season ... and not in a good way! "manchester pride" ... you’re a City fan then? And what’s with all these sweets 'n' toffees your eating, you'll have either no teeth or diabetes soon!!!

OK, OK, look I apologise for the hostility but my fantasy team is so unbelievably pants! And you were just there and an Evertonian and and and ... my team is doing really really REALLY badly. I’ve already resorted to buying a Chelski player!!!!!!!!!!

Fortunately my real team is joint top (c’mon you mighty Reds!) with some rubbish side with no history. AND fortunately I’m not a Spurs fan!!! I think I’ll put a post up on the Fantasy Forum notice board later to wind up our league manager ‘Fairly Butch’, so cruel ... but easy!!!!

lozzy150's picture

Its my liver I'm more worried about!

Let it all out, its ok- everything is going to be alright. Allow me to be your metaphorical punch bag- its not like us blues aren't used to it.

Everton are back on winnng ways and will be nowhere near the bottom half of the table this season, you might have had another convincing(!) win but we'll just wait and see what happens on derby day.

( I should explain that my bravado is still running strong from a good gay pride weekend and I reserve the right to retract any and all comments at any time!)

sticks and stones

may break my bones, but Spurs will never win ahem, but names will never hurt me.  okay, i'm back after a few days away from the interwebs, and all i can see is cruel taunting - infamy, infamy, they've all got it in for me........

i don't care what you say, it's a marathon not a sprint - so what if the mighty Spurs are cackola (as per bloody usual) at the start of this season?  Arsenal aren't doing much better, and Man U and Liverpool are hardly convincing.  okay, so Chelski look on quite good form - but they did last season as well, and came away with nothing.   once my boys get up to speed there'll be no stopping us!  hahahahahaahaaaaaaaaa!

Man U had a rubbish game

Man U had a rubbish game against Zenit,granted...

we are totally lacking up front - i'm REALLY hoping that Berbatov can bring some magic to our frontline. but then again...with the likes of Tevez,Rooney,Anderson and Evra supplying him with good balls....he won't be short for oppurtunities!

p.s - congrats on the draw against spurs...that WHOLE one point must feel SO good
