France: national database 'Edvige' may collect information on (homo-)sexualityFor the French AE-readers who may not yet be aware of this, please check out the website http://nonaedvige.ras.eu.org/. 'Edvige' stands for 'exploitation documentaire et valorisation de l’information générale' (pretty self-explanatory, right?) and is managed by the French Secret Service DCRI. It was introduced per July 1st 2008 per decree, meaning not public discussion. It´s meant to serve police and other government agencies and it is supposed to collect general data such as, among other, identity, profession, physical characteristics, friends (!), etc. Because the text of the decree allows the application of an earlier decree, the collection of data re. ethnicity, health and sexual activity is possible. Right. This is alarming.
Another one of those sweet little orwellian tools that have become so en vogue with politicians lately, also here in Germany and on the EU level. Normaly I'm most offended by anything that serves to discriminate on the basis of sexual orientaton (for obvious reasons). But as far as Edvige is concerned, I see that as the smaller problem.
What angers me more is that the whole thing was done silently, without informing the public about it. How was that? "The price of freedom is eternal vigilance." Oh, so true.
What angers me even more is that a database which is described as a "database of violent criminals", is, as is described at another point of the corresponding decree, obviously intended to also save and make available information about persons who are seeking a "political, union or religious mandate" or are already holding such a mandate.
But what angers me most is that it's also planned for Edvige to accumulate and centralize data about every individual or group "who might disturb the public order". This wording is so blurry, so wide, so general, that it can include EVERYTHING. It only depends on who is defining what constitutes a "disturbance of the public order".
My advice to the people of France: Get rid of Sarkozy ASAP. This guy is one giant asshole. Well, can't say that Merkel and Schäuble are much better. Seems we have the same problems.
