AE world map of TV shows with lesbian/bi characters

Discuss the map and suggest revisions and additions here!

Please note: this map is only for shows currently airing original/new episodes with lesbian/bi characters! The map is not intended to reflect shows that had lesbian characters in the past but don't now, or shows that are no longer running original episodes.

So please only suggest shows that are 1) scripted (not reality); and 2) currently airing new episodes with lesbian/bi characters (although they are still eligible if they are in-between seasons).

That's awesome.

There's soap in NZ called Shortland Street that's had some lesbian characters. I don't watch it but I'm sure someone will provide the details.

 Otherwise, how fun!

Laragh McManus's picture

Shortland Street

There's one lesbian character on Shortland Street at the moment - Maia Jeffries (played by Anna Julienne). She's been in it since 2004 and had a civil union ceremony (i think the first on network tv, at least in NZ) in 2005 with her partner Jay Copeland, who was killed last year. She had a son last year aswell, named Jay after her deceased wife. She's currently not in any relationship. Hope that helped!

South?

What about South of Nowhere? It still has a few more episodes left in season 3b this fall. Did I just miss it on the map?
Sarah Warn's picture

Can't believe I forgot that one!

I had it on my list to add, of course, but completely spaced! :) I'll put it on right now...

Hi everyone, I never

Hi everyone,

I never watch this TV show but I heard about a lesbian couple in a french TV show called "cinq soeurs". I don't know if someone ever see this show and if there is a real lesbian relationship in it.

Peut-être qu'il y a certaines françaises plus au courant que moi sinon j'ai démaré un site que vous pouvez visiter sur le lien suivant laissez moi vos commentaires. http://girlshavefun2.blogspot.com/

international lesbian/bi characters

UK:

BROOKSIDE (beth and margaret's infamous kiss back in the mid 1990s) a seminal moment for me: ooh, i like girls too...

EMMERDALE had a long-running lesbian character called zoe

SUGAR RUSH!!!

germany:

there were lesbians in MARIENHOF which is on at the same time of day as verbotene liebe. and TATORT: detective lena odenthal kissed a woman in one episode and is played by real-life lesbian, ulrike folkerts (*swoon*)

(hmm, maybe i watch too much tv sometimes...)

Sarah Warn's picture

only shows currently airing new episodes

So most of the shows you mention don't qualify (sorry, Sugar Rush fans!). But it wasn't clear from your comment whether Marienhof and Tatort area currently airing new episodes, with lesbian/bi characters included; let me know if they are and I'll add them to the map.
ice cream's picture

oops!

yup, i didn't read the directions! sorry...

Ok,I think Tatort should be

Ok,I think Tatort should be listed. It's a crime TV show set in 14 cities around Germany and Austria. Every year they'll shoot about 2 or 3 episodes per city.

The lesbian character "Lena Odenthal" played by out German actress Ulrike Folkerts has been on the show "Tatort Ludwigshafen" (a city in Southern Germany) since 1989. The next episode with her character will air on july 27th, 8:15 pm in the ARD network. It's a 2006 rerun. There will be new episodes in fall 2008 and Winter 2008/09.

I added Tatort...

...but had difficulty finding info on Lena's storyline. If anyone wants to elaborate on this, please do and I'll update the map listing.

naupeck's picture

Lena Odenthal

Sorry, but Tatort doesn't belong on the map. True, there's been one show (Fette Krieger) years ago where Lena kissed a bisexual character (who was killed), but Ulrike Folkerts herself made it clear in several interviews that Lena Odenthal isn't a lesbian (or bisexual) and will never be. Right now, as far as I remember, Lena doesn't have any private life at all.
M I K's picture

ohhh

did she really?  i didn't know that. thx for the info =)

did you see the episode "fettkiller"? the storyline with the model "hitting on her" kinda pointed out the lesbian-ish thing. okay so that was probably an idea of the producers or sth.. like a sweeps thingy. well well.

House doesn't take place in California!! It takes place in Princeton, NJ/Plainsboro, NJ (my hometown AND the creator of the show's hometown.)

lena odenthal/ulrike folkerts

i love watching tatort and i've always loved the one with lena odenthal but i didn't know she's les! maybe that's why i always loved that series. what a pity i missed exactly that episode when she kissed a woman :(

thx for opening my eyes =)

Not to point out the obvious but...

BAD GIRLS?!

Surely that should be on the UK map... accompanied of course by a smouldering picture of our favourite wing governor, Miss Stewart?

And in USA, what about Carol and Susan from Friends? The East Coast is looking decidely lonely :P.

Australia- Neighbours

There's a new character on Neighbours who is bisexual. She is currently on the show but has yet to make a comment about her sexuality although she has been 'stalking' this singer (it's not as bad as it sounds... really, something about her focusing on the music scene for love and acceptance).

On the official site there's an interview with the star,

http://neighbours.com.au/2288.htm

There's a paragraph which says:

Donna hasn’t had much luck in love, with either guys or girls.  “She’s actually bisexual.  In one of the blocks she is talking to Bridget about their ‘first time’ and Donna asks Bridget if it was with a guy or girl?  I liked the way the writers conveyed that, it was just really subtle and they didn’t make a big coming out scene of it.  I think it’s a good message to send out because it’s not such a big deal to lots of people.  Not all of them have such drama surrounding it,” Margot said.

Is this going to be another

Is this going to be another Skye/Lana thing? Because that was one time alot of nonsense  and on the other hand it was mostly positive.

I don't care about bi-plots that are just left to hang in the air and they always, always date guys. Whats the point?

Wrecker's picture

But

Lana was hot, so it was okay that it was so badly written

This map is fun!

Now if only I could get google directions from my house to Bette and Tina's then I would really be happy! :P lol

Okay, here is what came to my mind as to what might be missing...

What about Sordid Lives...? Isn't Olivia Newton-John's character supposed to be lesbian or bi?

And what about Dante's Cove? Is that coming back for another season?

Also 3Way? Are web series to be included on this map or no?

Hmmm, that all I gots for ya for now! :)

Sarah Warn's picture

Thanks for the suggestions!

Thanks for the reminder re: Dante's Cove, and the info about Neighbours; I added them both to the map.

Olivia Newton John's character on Sorded Lives is bisexual, so I'll add that show to the map once it starts airing.

I'm not currently planning to add web series right now, because it's a little trickier to determine what country to categorize them in, and because it's a lot more work. :) But that's a good suggestion in general; I'll try to think of a way to do something with those in the future.

Pyewacket's picture

How about tv "reality" shows?

Like the current cycle of Shear Genius?
Sarah Warn's picture

Too difficult to manage

Since reality TV contestants come and go, are rarely on for more than one season (if that), are often cagey about their sexuality, and because the definition of "reality TV" is so fluid (i.e. it includes talk shows, competitive shows, home improvement shows, etc.), the sheer volume of shows and the amount of time spent updating them is more work than I can take on.

I'm also not sure how useful it would be, since you really can't watch reality TV shows in other countries, whereas there's at least a chance that you'll be able to see a British scripted show in America, or vice versa. Most reality TV shows are not released on DVD at all, which really limits the ability for others to watch them.

But maybe someday!

Pyewacket's picture

Then I won't even mention...

Tila Tequila and the possibility that there might be yet a third "shot at love."

*rolls eyes*

Oy.

Well, I did end up mentioning it...but...you know what I mean.

re: web series

Shouldn't you just take the country it originated from? Like Girltrash, that originated in the US (as far as I know).

Love the map but am missing my sugar rush!

OK! so this map is awsome:) and Thank-you greatly!!!

Buuut! Brit programme sugar rush surely has to be recorded on this map, and probably on the british isles somewhere!! (most likely brighton as that's where its set & filmed but whatever floats your boat) It's like imfamous amoungst the UK located people of the gay scene! and some who arnt.

Is it not on cos no new series is being made? (damn big brother and small minded Channel 4 executives [or whoever decides programming]) But if that's the case then I rekon it should still be on there because the old series' are still being played. I dono...I just love the show! (and the book, tho the former is not an accurate interpritation of the later in many respects)

Anyway, im goin to stop ranting, (and drinkin highly caffiniated drinks) cheers again for the legendary map and shall look forward to any futre updates *cof*sugar rush* cof*

Love layladylayxxx

and...

2) Buffy????!!!!!!!.....need I say more?

Ok, so im really gona stop typin now, sorry if its me just not seein these programmes on the map

I agree, those are great shows! But the map only shows TV shows currently airing original episodes with lesbian/bi characters.

Hospital Central

This map is awesome! Thank u so very much Sarah. The effort must have been almost titanic! so, just one thing. There is a new lesbian character in hospital Central since last season, Carolina Cerezuela, who plays a psychiatrist and is Maca's current girlfriend. So now we have 3 lesbian characters on the same show!! The girl in question is this..

Kidi's picture

I love that show. There's definitely an interesting love triangle going on between Esther,Maca and Vero :)

I also love this show, but i don't speak spanish and it doesnt air in Australia as far as i know, i found it on youtube, started watching it, had no idea what they were saying but i worked it out, before i found the subtitled versions of the show  that someone so kindly translated for us no speaking spanish fans- i understood the words yes, no, coffee, jealous, lesbian and ok. I agree with you Kidi there is an interesting love triangle between the three of them, but the one thing i hate is Raul why is he always hanging around? i know he works there but still. How hot is Maca when she winks or Patricia Vico in general? i have to ask since i don't speak spanish and dont have a clue what it means - what does chiqui mean? Vero said it Maca in the supply closet.

Midlife Crisis

There's a show currently showing in the Netherlands, called 'Midlife Crisis', about 4 couples, one of them lesbian.

I'm not sure if the show qualifies as 'current', because it first aired in 2006 and is now being re-aired (network problems). I'm not sure if they're planning on a second season.

Sadly, the creativity of the Dutch writers doesn't seem to get much further than the whole 'let's get a baby and then break up afterwards' lesbian theme....

http://www.rtl.nl/soaps/midlifecrisis/

Sarah Warn's picture

Midlife Crisis

Unfortunately, this show doesn't qualify as "current", since it's a 2006 show in re-runs.
frammie's picture

Yeah, figured as much

Though technically (sorry, law-background, can't help it ;-) ), the second half of the season wouldn't be a rerun. The first time the show aired, it got janked of the air midway through.

I'm confused about the

I'm confused about the locations?  Why is the L Word in Nevada and South of Nowhere in Arizona?
Pyewacket's picture

LOL

I think only so many of those little tv sets can fit in the LA-area of California and so thus there is spillage over into Arizona and Nevada.

I have been trying to think of NY based shows that have lesbian and bisexual women in them...that are still on the air. Hmmmm...still thinking...

What about "cinq soeurs"???

Nobody watch this TV show? Maybe it could be add on this map? Is there any french who can tell if it match to the description?

Sarah Warn's picture

Cinq Soeurs

I need some verification from French readers who have actually seen the show that it's currently airing, and has lesbian/bi characters, before I can add it to the map. (It would also be helpful if someone provided or pointed me to the basic info about the show and its lesbian storyline.)

Degrassi

I don't know if I'm missing the point of this, but I am sure that Degrassi: Next Gen is out of Toronto Ont, not Vancouver.
DaKoolOne's picture

I need clarification please?

Is this where the shows are shot or where in the world the show takes place? If it's where they take place Grey's Anatomy needs to be put in Seattle.

Sarah Warn's picture

Clarification re: icon placement

Please disregard the actual city the TV icon for a show is placed in - the map is meant to represent only the country of origin. This is for a few reasons: because it's annoyingly impossible to click on individual icons when they're all clustered together in the same city (i.e. Los Angeles) without having to zoom in endlessly; and because it is often difficult to determine where a show is actually shot (especially international ones). Plus some shows are shot in multiple locations, etc.

Hope this makes sense.

DaKoolOne's picture

Thanks...

I get it now. Very cool addition to an already cool site!

Awesome

I heart this whole map idea, it's awesome.

I'm ashamed to say, I have no idea whether or not there are any gay characters on any of the shows in the Netherlands right now...but there usually are, so I'll have a look...

I did catch Midlife crisis the other day that features a lesbian couple, which Frammie mentioned already.

Touch and go with Torchwood?

This is a brilliant idea! Really good top marks for this! :)

Just wondering if Torchwood would qualify?? I read that the character was taken in by an alien and isnt really bisexual, but then i also read that the same character actually is bisexual depsite that.....hmmm confusing, though we are talking about a time travelling band of merry people, trying to save the universe from which ever evil force Doctor Who doesnt have time for!

Im sooo glad the UK has 'Out Of The Blue' Its a really good show and features a stable, sane, non psychotic lesbian couple, and the great thing is they dont get any extra air time! - meaning they are treated like any other couple in the show, no sensationalism! phew refreshing :)

Clara's picture

hmm prolly not Torchwood atm

..I think in Torchwood at the moment the only gay or bisexual characters are men

Toshiko is bi/infatuated/experimenting with that alien girl (who she didn't know was an alien at first), but *SPOILER*

she died at the end of the second series.. this i know, however i didn't watch more than 2 episodes of season 2, unlike season 1 which I watched all of, so i guess it'd possible that another female character has come along who is gay (or bisexual most probably, because nobody seems to be gay on Torchwood, only bisexual or straight with same sex-encounters brought about by alien-ness)

Torchwood_Operative's picture

Toshiko Sato (Torchwood) should be on the map

Toshiko Sato should be on the map because:

a) The character is bi. She fell for that mysterious woman without knowing she was an alien.

b) Even though Tosh was killed off, she could still come back. Afterall, this is Torchwood we're talking about. On this show characters have a tendency not to stay dead.

Cherry / Torchwood_Operative

Shortland Street - TVNZ (New Zealand)

Hi Sarah, I see Shorty St was mentioned at the beginning of the comments and wondered if you hadn't added it yet cos you needed some more info (or gasp could it be that you're not sure where NZ is??? lol), so here's some links (the first two are pics of the couple, the second two are about the characters):

http://images.tvnz.co.nz/tvnz_images/tv2/programmes/maia_jay_wedding_c.jpg
http://shortlandst.tvnz.co.nz/images/content/maia-and-jay.jpg
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/430878/470586
http://tvnz.co.nz/view/page/459100

The lesbian couple were main characters, and yes they did do the baby thing, and yes one died a grizzly death... but at least she was one of five that were murdered, so it wasn't a story line about "killing off the lesbian".

The other is, I believe, still a main (out lesbian) character on the show, and the show is still airing original episodes.

Sarah Warn's picture

Thanks!

Appreciate all the info — I just added the show to the map.

german show: Lindenstraße

There's another german TV show, actually it's the longest running soap opera in germany, called "Lindenstraße". They showed a lesbian relationship in the mid 90s. That was Tanja Schildknecht and Sonja Besirsky. Sonja dies because of an overdose. 2001 Tanja falls in love with young Franziska Brenner. The relationship lasts till Tanja meets Suzanne in 2004. Tanja and Suzanne are still together, they actually got married in May 2008. But one day after the wedding Suzanne moves away from her family (they have a Baby together), because she has a job in another city. So. I don't know how the story will develop, but the two are still together, you see them talking on the phone. I don't know if Tanja follows Suzanne and leaves the Lindenstraße or if she will stay. Right now, she's still there, so I think that qualifies "Lindenstraße" for the map.

Btw the actress who plays Suzanne (Susanne Evers) is an out lesbian in real life.

Lindenstraße has always dealt with homosexuality. They even featured the first gay kiss on german television in 1990. There was a gay couple since 1995 played by two actors, who are gay and out in real life. In 1997 there was a gay wedding.

So "Lindenstraße" plays an important role when it comes to visibility of gays and lesbians and their relationships in germany.

Oh and now I see, that it

Oh and now I see, that it already has a place in the map. Weird enough, the little tv icon is in France, so i didn't click on that one. Is Germany too small maybe? ;)
