Moving to Linux
I was looking through this section of the forum and was very pleased to see that many Windows users already know about my two fave Windows programs... Firefox and AdAware.
But I will take security a step further... Linux.
I will be the first to admit, Linux CAN BE confusing to the newbie. And help is often limited. But that is changing. In fact, there is a variation of Linux available that is EASIER than WINDOWS. Yes, it is true.
Mepis http://www.mepis.org/
Mepis installs in a fraction of the time taken by Windows. Once installed everything you could ever need is already in place, your web browser, your office suite, your multimedia players, your firewall (and it is configured properly), and a host of other programs.
Mepis also recognizes hardware more readily than Windows. For example, I would have to manually install my graphics card and my LAN to run them on Windows. Mepis knew what they were and what to do with them from the get go.
But perhaps one of the coolest things about Mepis is that it comes with a Live CD. So you can test it out before installing it. You just boot to the CD and run Mepis. If you like it, you click on the INSTALL ME icon on the desktop and it does the rest in a few minutes.
(NOTE: The Live CD will run much slower than the actual OS).
Since switching to Linux I do not have crashes. I mean.... NEVER. It doesn't even hang. I do not need to defrag. I don't need to tweak (unless I want to change how something looks). It is just so easy. And there is nothing I can't do on Mepis that I could do on Windows. I can even run many Windows programs.
If anyone is interested in trying it out and needs some help, say so here, and I will check back and provide support.
