Any geeky comic book fans?Just wondered if any one out there was a graphic novel/comic book reader...? I'm new-ish to this sort of reading but a friend of mine introduced me a couple of months ago to it - and so I'm after tips and suggestions etc... especially if you know good ones that are not about male superheroes or superhuman .. zombie things.. I am big into Tank Girl though - anyone else? (She's so cool!) Love Crayon, (Aka, super nerd) Submitted by Crayon (105 posts) on June 19, 2008 - 1:42pm. |

Strangers in Paradise
You definitely want to check that out (AfterEllen's mentioned SiP a few times...) It"s a graphic novel about two women and a man and their trials and tribulations in life.

"Be who you are and say what you feel, because those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind." (Dr. Seuss)
Did anyone beep me ?
Got like 2000 Comics. I stopped collecting awhile ago, but still buy a grafic novel here and there. And yes, the Tank Girl Comics are awesome....unlike the trainwreck of a Movie. :P
If you´re into Art grab some Bill Sienkiwiecz Stuff. He´s absolutely amazing. The Lynch of Comics.
I read a lot of webcomics.
I read a lot of webcomics. Flipside, Misfile, Khaos, When She was Bad, Simply Sarah, I was Kidnapped by Lesbian Pirates from Outer Space, YU+ME, The Lounge, Sluggy...
Hack/Slash is also really cool. Let's see, there's also The Sandman, Y The Last Man.

"For yesterday is but a dream, and tomorrow is only a vision; but today well lived makes every yesterday a dream of happiness, and every tomorrow a vision of hope.Uhmm...are female superhumans alright?
Terry Moore's "Echo" just started recently....Issue #1 and #2 are out.
I'm not really sure what you're looking for. Are you not interested in Sci-Fi and supernatural stuff at all? Or are you just looking for something that's not so testosterone driven?
comic suggestions
Awesome stuff! I love the suggestions and have checked out all the ones that you each have written about.
The Terry Moore "Echo" one looks cool! I heard SIP was good so I'm guessing this one will be too.
And Doby - I totally agree, Sienkiewicz is incredibly talented.
What I'm after I suppose, are graphic novels that are less League of Gentleman/Marvel Comic/testosterone driven and more Tank Girl/Ariel Schrag/Persepolis... so the comedic/feminist/philosophical/ordinary life comics.. If that makes sense. At all...
But I've been given awesome ideas so thank you!
Also if you haven't yet seen:

You should. :)

bambi
omg I love the bambi strip. he totally takes her wallet. I recently picked up this comic called Wonderland, which basically picks off after Alice left. I generally like stories that screw over fairy tales. If you want stuff with female main characters ted naifeh has a few good books. But they arn't for mature readers just basic comics. Were you looking for more adult graphic novels or does it not matter?
I am my very own shade of grey.
Two words: Wonder Woman
Have you discovered Wonder Woman yet?
Have you checked out She-Hulk and Ms. Marvel?
Madame Xanadu is getting released this week from Vertigo. These are ones I can think of that's on my pull list right now. They're not really graphic novels, but rather single issues released every month, but they usually have a trade paperback released every few months or so.
If you're into ordinary life comics with lots of philosophy involved, lean towards the comics from Vertigo.
There's usually something for everyone if you look hard enough.
Comicbooks
I'm a pretty big comic book/Graphic novel person.
Bone this is a book i think, but excellent all the same
The Dark Tower Series this is 7so far, they're be stephen king, Excellen, definitly worth reading.
Then of course a few of my guilty pleasures
Spiderman, the newer ones are pretty good.
Star Wars
Xmen
and a few others online ones i have a few

www.licd.com
so if that helps you out at all, its all about what you're in to ^_^ i have many more suggestions so just ask :)
Well I'll just throw out...
What I like...and I do tend to lean towards the Sci-Fi and supernatural. I guess you can check it out and decide for yourself.
"Promethia" is rather philosophical...lots of symbolism
"Runaways" is a Marvel comic, but it's rather good. The first were written by Brian K Vaughan, then Joss Whedon took over writing, and Terry Moore is taking over very soon. (Yeah, I gotta theme here LOL)
Of course I love the Season 8 "Buffy" comics, and I'm trying to be restrained about it. ;) And that's been covered here on AfterEllen, so I'm guessing you've heard of it.
Y The Last Man... is just fascinating.
Okay, basically if it's Terry Moore, Joss Whedon or BKV writing...I usually like it. I do like some other stuff...but the one's I listed here are definately girl-friendly (by which I mean well written, not sexist...and not stupid half-naked chicks with unrealistically large racks)
Well,
GrrrlRomeo we definitely have the same taste in writing:) I just love sip, anything by joss whedon(although I don't really liked his runaways run, probably because he is just a little too lazy for me and seriously 6 issues in almost 1,5 years, I don't even remember how it started) I'm sure terry will do wonders in Runaways, also BKV is like a comic book god to me, everything he does is gold for me. I love Y The Last Man and Runaways, I also really liked the escapist mini, I'm going to start reading love and rockets and fables(probably gonna read them all this week:)) really hoping I like them, I need a new comic to bond:) BTW all runaways fans should check this out http://www.humbertoramos.com/blog/ , this is the artist who's gonna draw Terry Moore's run, I really miss alphona though no one can draw Karolina like he does:) Also my favorite cover artist is Jo Chen, her runaways covers are brilliant and he did covers for Buffy comics too (like the one on my avatar) :) But my favorite cover by her is definitely this one http://www.comicartcommunity.com/gallery/details.php?image_id=14748 .
Definitely
Definitely http://girlyyy.com/
It's a web comic with lesbian main-plotline and simply hilarious fun to read. Although especially anime-fans might be appalled by the art in the first moment, for it is really cartoony. But once you are into it, it has a charm on it's own. Go check it and get addicted, it's free anyway!
Beside that i used to read what is on lililicious before they dropped most of the cool stuff..
http://girlyyy.com/
I've read almost all of this comic now! It's so brilliant and funny! Thanks v mucho for the tip :]

Oooh
Tank Girl = <3
I also am a super big fan of Daniel Clowes as well as Adrien Tomine and the Strangers in Paradise series.
I was also really into superheroe comics as a kid, especially X-Men. I used to be a huge Archie fanatic as well and, until embarrasingly recently, would always get an issue when I went to the supermarket.
BATWOMAN and Wonder Woman
I don't read them as much as I used to I am too busy working on them...lol
Just keep an eye out for Batwoman. I have been assured by my editors are DC that they are taking the lesbian story line seriously and are not making her a fan boy fantasy. Fingers crossed it is true..only with a male writer I am a little leary.
I will tell you All Star Wonder Woman is shaping up to be the end all be all of Wonder Woman books. A good friend of mine is drawing and writing the book. From what I have seen and heard it is going to be fantastic. Now if it will ever be finished in our lifetime...once can olny hope..LOL.
Rosario Dawson's book. O.C.T. Occult Crime Taskforce was pretty good and they are looking to make it into a feature film. You can get it all four issues in a trade now. She worked with some friends of mine on the project and they also have another in the works. Should be good.
manga
i am into the magna stuff, it is a graphic novel i think

Graphic Novels I Read
"Gotham Central" by Greg Rucka is recently collected in a hardcover trade. It's the one that tells the story of Gotham City from the ground - the Gotham City detectives. It has Renee Montoya's coming out storyline.
Renee Montoya is currently one of my favourite DC characters - because her character, and her current run as The Question has so much potential. And yes, it's nice to have a flawed heroine who is also an out-lesbian, with unresolved issues with Batwoman.
The Vic Sage/Montoya storyline in the "52" series was one of the more interesting threads in that ambitious - but ultimately disappointing series.
Other "girl-centric" titles that I read:
Peter David's "Fallen Angel", "Strangers in Paradise" - which has ended, "Manhunter", and "Birds of Prey" (and anything written by Gail Simone)
And of course, Season 8 of Buffy in graphic novel form.
