Tell me your lesbian role model storiesLast night, I went out for a nice walk and was thinking about stuff. True story. One particular thing that crossed my mind, though, was my semi-lack of lesbian role models. I can barely think of lesbian women whose lives I think are incredible and I'd like to end up emulating. I live in a somewhat sheltered part of the world (the bible belt of western Canada), and so most of the lesbians I know personally don't seem to have lives that are anything like how I envision living as a 40-year-old or something. I think it's kind of hard to plan my future, etc. without really having any idea of what the ideal lesbian life would be for me. Do you know what I mean? Tegan and Sara definately are having the music career I'd like to experience, and Ellen is a talented, successful, respected person with a gorgeous and talented partner, but beyond that, I can't really say there are any lesbian women I can think of that I'd 'like to be'. I think it's frustrating because, as an 18 year old pretty much gay girl, the whole "white picket fence" dream is out the window, and my womanly, domestic instincts are longing for a comforting alternative to emulate. Would anyone out there like to share stories of lesbian role models whose lives inspire them? Does anyone know some really happy lesbians who've really got it together?

white picked fence dream ,
Role Models..
Hello,
Well for me, also as an 18 year old pretty much gay girl, I too am on the lookout for role models.
For me, a truly awesome role model is Daniela Sea. I heard a podcast she did with her girlfriend (who is a folk musician called Bitch funnily enough) which was so inspirational I changed how I thought about gender, monogamy, freedom, money...

Then there's some authors - Virginia Woolf, Ali Smith - who are also big role models for me because their writing is so brilliant and unconventional, and both were/are queer. They inspire me because they are life affirming in their writing, and have such interesting outlooks on life :)
I hope this is what you are after...
Also, I was curious so I looked up your music on Myspace.. and it's so super! I really really love it. And the song about Nitrates... SO USEFUL! (and real funny too) I have a biology exam in which I need to know the Nitrogen Cycle! Your music reminds me of Ani Difranco. Brill stuff :) You seem like an awesome girl.
Take care,

Firstly you can't plan
Firstly you can't plan your future, you just have to do whatever makes you happy and see where life takes you. Remember that life is a jouney and not a destination that you have to reach. Who knows what you'll do in your future...
As for role models apart from people you've already talked about this site is full of them; look at any of the women that are a part of this site and see what they have accomplished, if they aren't role models then I don't know what is.

Sleeping Too Much In Western Canada
Are you awake? Have you witness just the sunsets and sunrises? If yes, then you still need to observe more. Life doesn't just begin with the sunrises and sunsetting. You have wind, birds, weather, people, sounds of traffic, etc that encompasses with sun rises and sun sets. The point I'm making is for you to look at what's around you besides the obvious. There are and has been tons of lesbian role models, mainly past and current famous womyn. When I first came out to myself that is what I did. I turned towards famous womyn. I understand there aren't a whole lot of local hometown lesbian role models, but if you search for them you will perhaps find a few of them. You're not wanting to find them. If you did, you would have found them. One who seeks for something will find everything and more.
So have you been awake long enough to find any? I found plenty role Lesbian/Bi womyn role models. And a few of them are here on Afterellen- both vloggers and readers.
Much luck on your seek and find Lesbian role model journey.
I have life role models,
I have life role models, not specific lesbian ones, because I think the wisdom of strong people is transferable. I think about Martin Luther King and his powerful yet peaceful speeches that rallied people together to change this country; the Jews in Germany during the holocaust who would not denounce their faith even if it meant saving their lives; the suffragettes who fought for their rights for decades; Lance Armstrong, who's little yellow bracelet started a movement to end cancer; Alex Scott, who started a lemonade stand when she was 4 to help kids with cancer like herself and has raised millions of dollars, even after her death http://www.alexslemonade.org/ ; Helen Keller, who despite her disabilities triumphed; Anne Malhum, who invited homeless people on her early morning runs and empowered them to change their lives http://www.cnn.com/2008/LIVING/04/02/heroes.mahlum/index.html ; Pat Tillman, who gave up a multimillion dollar football career to defend his country, even though the war was based on a lie, even though when he died his family was lied to about the circumstances of that death; Hans Christian Anderson, who wrote The Emperor Has No Clothes in 1837, long before his book would mirror the Bush
catastrophepresidency. These people challenge me to live my life like those I respect because their wisdom, fortitude and other qualities are bigger than boxing them into a category, lesbian or otherwise.
