Discuss AfterEllen's Hot 100 (2008)

Did the results end up like you thought?  Do you think a celebrity should have placed higher or lower than they did?  Do you think someone shouldn't have placed at all?  Care to question why AE readers voted the way they did?

Then do so here!  Share those thoughts!  The 2008 AfterEllen Hot 100 has (finally) arrived!

(it's like Christmas morning in Queerland.)

great list but...

in what universe is tina fey hotter than Jill Bennett or Jennifer Beals? you will always be my #1 Jill. congrats to all the ladies.

I think Jill bennett should

I think Jill bennett should be number 1, well thats how I see it, cause yeah she's attractive but what makes her hot is that she's smart and funny, like i said she seems to be a good person as well she makes a great role model for bi/lesbian girls, i'd just like to say well done jill for being you.

I don't know about anyone else...

but narrowing it down to ten was very difficult for me.  There are so many qualities that attract me...over and above a good set of ta-tas or a great booty walking away...it took me about a week to narrow my list down to the hottest of the hot.  And by hottest of the hot...I mean I can practically feel my body being set on fire by just seeing their image on my computer screen.

While not all of my top ten made the list...I can certainly understand what other people see in the other women who made the list and I am not surprised by any of these hotties.

What I don't understand is the negativity I am reading in many of the comments...people wondering why certain women made the list or wondering why they are ranked where they are...wondering why there is a lack of queerness or color...or wondering why people associated with AE are on the list.

*sigh*

I wonder if the male readers of Maxim played Monday morning quarterback when their list came out...or did they just appreciate all 100 women...?

Shouldn't we as women be celebrating all 100 women?  And just celebrating women in general?  Because as a few posters (thank goodness for them) pointed out...the women who did not make the list or the women who were on the list last year but did not repeat again this year...are all evidence of the fact that there are a heck of a lot of hot women of all colors, ages, careers, and sexualities.

And all I can say to that is...AMEN!

I would also like to thank everyone at AE who was involved in the counting and coordinating of the votes.  I want to thank everyone who actually took the time to vote.  For those of you who did not vote...I hope there will be 3rd annual vote and list next year...and that you are now motivated to participate when the time comes.

I understand what your

I understand what your saying Pyewacket but I don't think negative criticism is necessarily a bad thing. The reason why a lot of people dissected the list more then straight men would dissect the Maxim or FHM list is because AE and the hot 100 mean a lot to us. Not only is it one of the few lists out there of its type but its very rare to see representations of what lesbian/bi women like in mainstream media.

I think perhaps to open our eyes to many of the diverse lesbian/bi women/actresses playing lesbian/bi roles we could have many of these top 10/top 100 lists. Perhaps by region, or continent or something. Or perhaps a top 100 out celebrities, or top 100 actors who've played lesbian and bi roles. I just feel that they should be acknowledged. I think that's a good way to increase visibility and to allow lesbians/bi women from different backgrounds who may come across this site to realize that our definition of beauty transcends color, race, age and size.

On a personal note, though I love Caucasian women (they don't seem to love me :(), seeing lesbian/bi women of color or even gay friendly women of color is important to me and others in many ways. There are few spaces for women of color who are out or in the process of coming out and a lot of the other places where they might turn to for support may be unintentionally hostile. A couple of my white lesbian friends doubted my "lesbian ness" because they didn't think a person of my background could be a lesbian. I have, along with couple of my other brown and black friends, been refused entry to  gay and lesbian clubs because  we weren't the sort of people the club was looking for. Interestingly, when I went with my white friends and butched up my appearance it was all ok and I was allowed in.

Twice Caucasian women whom I’ve been very attracted to, and who seemed to be attracted to me have rejected me because they didn’t want to have a long-term relationship with me. This is definitely not limited to Caucasian women only, but I’d like to see people, in general, from different racial backgrounds appreciating the beauty of women from different backgrounds to themselves. It just doesn’t happen often enough.  On top of that I come from a culture/background where whiteness is very much emphasised and preferred. Add all those together..and as you can see I clearly have issues. Feel free to ignore me. :)  And for these reasons its important for me, personally, to see diversity on this list and see at least 1 woman of color who is out and proud. So I'm glad Dara and Jenn were up there. 18 isn't a bad number and I guess wanting more is being greedy.

Anyway, i think it's just like criticizing the L word. We love it and would defend it against "outsiders", but we always feel like we would do certain things differently. Whether that be the representation of lesbians of color, the use of stereotypes on the show or the lack of representation of Asian characters etc.

Btw, thanks for your post on my top 10 hottest women of color post

Pyewacket's picture

Hey...

I understand what you are saying in regards to your personal life...believe me...because I think most of us have gotten that "other than" kind of attitude in one way or another...and I agree with you in that regard.

But the Hot 100 List is only as good as what we (those 100,000 of us who took the time to vote lol) put into it. So to read such negativity (and I am not talking ciriticism that leans towards the negative side, there is a big difference) about the ages and the rankings and whether certain people should have been eligible or not...and even the pictures that were used...that is what I think is a shame.

And we all rank what is hot in a different way. For me, I tried to go with who I really felt are hot women...so I ignored the categories and labels of their ages, careers, sexuality, nationality...and went with my gut. For an interesting side note, as white as I am, no one ever thinks I am any sort of gay what-so-ever...and my list for your 10 hottest women of color post was basically my list of 10 that I entered in for the hot 100.

Also regarding your post...it got me thinking...maybe we could start a few more posts similar to yours...kind of like what you mentioned...maybe people here would feel more represented if we did a few threads and broke the lists down into sub-categories like the top 10 hottest queer women...the top 10 hottest women in sports...the top 10 hottest women 40 and over...the top 10 hottest women under 40...and the top 10 hottest women in music. I am sure there could be a few more sub-categories but those are the ones that came to mind right away.

What do you think?

So thank you for replying to me and I would never want to ignore anyone who took all the time and effort as you did. Thanks again. :)

Ria's picture

Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply Pyewacket. I wasn't sure if I had unintentionally offended you or anything. I didn't want it to sound that just because i posted a forum topic about women of color that I had something against Caucasian women. I think 6 out of my 10 choices were Caucasian. In fact, you had more women of color on your list than I did. That's pretty cool. :)

I agree with you in that some of  the comments have been unfairly critical of the list. I think it definitely improved from last year and it can only get better. You are completely having a number of top 10 lists. In fact it might even form a sub forum topic on the community section. For eg. a Top 10 women from various areas of life. And tehn underneath it we could have top 10 women under 40 (or over 40), top 10 hottest queer women etc. I think that's an awesome idea.

Sorry if I came across as kind of negative. I guess I'm negative about some aspects of my life and it can kind of affect my comments a little. Being a double minority can kind of suck sometimes because you feel like nobody will ever get you.

Anyways, I didn't mean to be negative at all. And thanks for taking the time to reply to me. I appreciate it.

Pyewacket's picture

Trust me, I never thought your posts were negative.

I never saw you write anything accusing any of your fellow posters or anyone on the AE staff of any sort of bias regarding this hot 100 list. I liked the fact that you shared your perspective.

And I agree with you, this list is better then last year and it can only improve as more people get involved to vote and maybe open their horizons a bit more between now and the next vote next year to see all the womanly hottness that is available globally. lol

*wink*

I do like the idea of coming up with a hot 10 list for the different categories. I tried it on my own and it was rather fun...but I am too much of a chicken to get the ball rolling here. lol

:)

LilyJadeRose's picture

still a good list

i was so happy to see the list come out!  and i'm even happier that a few of my picks made the list.

i voted for sonja sohn, angelina jolie, alicia keys, mariah carey, sara ramirez, rose rollins, jennifer biels, america ferrara, mariska hargitay, and parminder nagra (i love ER way too much)

almost all of my picks made it somewhere onto the list.  i was slightly disappointed because i thought that more women of color and a wider variety of ages would make it onto the list.  i just assumed that an AE list would be immune to so many of the diversity issues that other hot 100 lists have.  but, as the gracious sarah warn put it, there aren't many women of color represented in the media to begin with...so those that are tend to be over represented, or not represented at all, when you do a list like this.  makes sense.

i still think this list is great and offers something that others don't...the women that make the list represent a wider spectrum of the population.
