Gambian president vows to behead homosexuals

Nice huh?

Quote:
President plans to kill off every single homosexual

Gambian President Yahya Jammeh says he will “cut off the head” of any homosexual caught in his country.

Addressing supporters at the end of his meet the farmers tour here Sunday, Jammeh also ordered any hotel or motel housing homosexuals to close down, adding that owners of such facilities would also be in trouble.

He said the Gambia was a country of believers, indicating that no sinful and immoral act as homosexual would be tolerated in the country.

He warned all homosexuals in the country to leave, noting that a legislation “stricter than those in Iran ” concerning the vice would be introduced soon.

President Jammeh said he was bent on making the Gambia one of the best countries to live in, adding that his government had spent over US$ 100 million towards the development of the country since 1994.

He said, however, that almost 98 per cent of the amount had gone to foreigners.

Well, there goes my vacation to Gambia. *rolls eyes*

I cannot believe that in this day and age we're still beheading people. I can't imagine living somewhere like that. I don't think I could. Well... obviously I couldn't... seeings that I'm gay... O_o.

I feel like i'm glimpsing

I feel like i'm glimpsing into medieval times. When Christianity was conquering all of Europe and planting their evil seeds. I guess Africa took a while to catch up.

Ironic

Isn't it ironic that this President vows such a barbaric and unlawful act, he was "bent on making the Gambia one of the best countries to live in"? Well, the Nazis also lived in that kind of illusion.

This is just awful. I have

This is just awful. I have to wonder if the USA, under Bush, considers this a human rights violation. I doubt we'll ever hear him speak out on this the way he would if they were vowing to behead any christian.

huh?

George Bush and the U.S.A. have nothing to do with this.  Don't get me wrong, I think good ol' George is an Arse but your comment here seems a bit misplaced.  What are your thoughts on Jamaican politics?

yael_shafritz's picture

actually george bush could

do something to help if he chose,

14.6% of Gambia's imports come from the United states they could stop the exports to Gambia.

also 60% of its imports come from the UK, France, Belgium and a couple of other EU countries. Bush could put pressure on the EU or on countries like Britain where there are strong links to stop Exporting as much to Gambia (obvously completely stopping exports would harm their economy aswell).

obviously Bush wouldn't do this, so it's a valid point as this will go unnoticed on the world stage as Jamaica is also going unnoticed.

in the end that's the world we live in, and all we can do is campaign for more awarness for sexual orientation as a human right!

please sign the petition to the UN trying to get this!

My point is that Bush speaks

My point is that Bush speaks out on human rights violations when they effect certain groups but he doesn't speak out when it effects gays. He  speaks out about human rights when it's those who he believes deserving of that. Vail is right, he could speak out if he chose to and that was my point.

I think she meant that

I think she meant that George Bush and co wouldn't comment negatively on this story as they would, say , if some fundamental country stated they wanted all Christians to leave or they would behead them. Neither would GWB and associates offer assylum or refugee status to gay people under persecution as they would to those who belong to particular faiths. It's obviously not a competition but its a comparison of which lives hold greater priority.

I mean, right now, many gays and lesbians in Iraq are being persecuted and hurt. yet all this is being tacitly supported by the present Iraqi government who are being supported by the US government and military. Obviously, George Bush isn't the only leader not taking a stand but it obviously means more coming from the powerful leader of the "free world."

Gays given 24 hours to leave Gambia

Apparently he's given gay people 24 hours to leave before this psycho president begins his Nazi reign of terror. Seriously, such people make me sick. And its even sadder to see someone like that elected to such a high position, instead of being confined to a mental assylum where he belongs.

It seriously makes you wish all homophobes could be deported to an  island somewhere where they could practice their hate and prejudice in isolation.

True..

I agree with dante72.

I read a week or two ago of a case about a woman from Uganda who wanted to stay in UK to be protected from her homeland's beating, raping, and torturing of homosexuals. this story and the others I have read make me sad, it's very sad. I do not know what else to say.

What can be done? How can we stop this from happening?

The Emperor Has No Clothes's picture

We can alert the media,

We can alert the media, bombard them with emails and phone calls. We can do the same with our senators and congresspeople. We can write and call gay action groups and civil action groups. Once we have a new president we can also bombard Obama's office. We can hold rallies and prostest to our own government for not doing more,we can hold protests at the embassies and the UN etc,

Signing on internet petition is fine, but I've never heard of an internet petition making much of a difference in anything.
