Transferring digital video to VHSHello ladies. I have a bit of a problem that I was hoping someone might be able to help me with. I need to transfer a digital video to a VHS tape. The digital video can be recorded either on my Mac in iMovie and saved as a .mov file, on my camera which will be saved as an .avi file, or on a digital camcorder that I have to figure out if any of my friends have that I can borrow. So I have a couple of questions: 1) Which option would be best/easiest? 2) How do I do it? I'm not sure if it's as simple as figuring out how to play either recorded video file on my tv and then just pressing record on the VCR. Yeah, I don't even know how to play any of the videos on my tv. I'm thinking the digital camcorder would be the best option, but I honestly don't know if I'll have access to one. Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated! Thanks. Submitted by hmmm (138 posts) on May 18, 2008 - 10:43am. |

m not really the tech genius or ne thing but....
i think the easiest option would be to record the movie on ur digital camcorder then connecting that to ur VCR/tv. i also googled :).

scroll a smidge n it's the second one down, starts with Answer. read up to that first link: youthspecialties.... u prob. just need this bit but....
‘Most digital cameras have a composite or coaxial out that you can connect directly to a VHS VCR. If you aren't going from a camera to a VCR, then it gets more complicated. You'll need a video card that has a video out connection.
if this doesn't help, well, i tried. :)
Why would you
want to convert a digital file into a VHS in light of the extreme loss of quality? You probably have your reasons for wanting to do so, try this instruction:
http://manic.cs.umass.edu/instructions/minDVtoVHS.php.
You mentioned "your camera", what kind of camera is that?
Thanks for the input.I know
Thanks for the input.
I know it's an odd request and I don't really understand it myself. A friend and I are applying for "Amazing Race" and for whatever reason they require a 3 min VHS video.
My camera is an Olympus FE-240, which I think, after reading the info you both sent, should be able to be hooked up to my TV via AV cable. So I'm hoping that once I hook it up and play it on the TV, I should be able to record on the VCR, but feel that being on a different input may be a problem. I'm going to give it a try and see how it goes.
However, if that doesn't work, do you think it would it be possible to hook up my camera via AV cable to the VCR input and have the video play and record through the VCR as I would with the S-video cable of a digital camcorder? Or that they wouldn't be compatible because they are different devices?
Hook up
your camera directly to your VCR as that is the recording device, the TV is just for checking the recording in your case.
I looked up your camera and it does have an AV output, link it via AV cable to your VCR input, that should do it.
Let us know if it works. Keeping my fingers crossed and good luck with "Amazing Race"!
No luck on that yet.
No luck on that yet. Couldn't even get the pictures or videos from my camera to view on the TV through the VCR. I think I'm missing something though ...
Do I also need to hook up a yellow/white/red cable from the VCR to the TV in order to do this? Obviously it would be "out" from the VCR and "in" to the TV.
OK, let´s try this
The manual can be found under http://www.olympusamerica.com/files/FE-230%20FE-240%20Advanced%20Manual.pdf, the relevant pages are 28/29.
Check your VCR for yellow and white input sockets, those are the ones to connect with your camera (the manual describes the linking to a TV but it is the same for a VCR). If that is not the case, which would be very unusual, you might want to get a SCART-cable with round video and audio sockets as a connector.
Of course, your VCR should be connected to the TV via SCART or regular cable and the respective AV-channel selected.
You would have the same problem with a camcorder as it´s exactly the same procedure: camera out - VCR in (via AV-cable), VCR out - TV in (via SCART or similar).
Oh, and when you record the material, make sure that you select the best quality available on your camera, there will be a substantial loss of quality.
If all things fail, you may try a local electronics shop, they may be able and willing to do that for you.
No luck
Thanks again, but I couldn't get it to work.
I hooked up the camera out - VCR in (via AV-cable) and VCR out - TV in (via red/yellow/white cables -- don't have SCART). I was able to get the VCR to record what was on the tv and view what was on the VCR tape, however, I still couldn't get the pictures or video from my camera to view on the TV through the VCR. Oh well.
Thank you so much for all of your help and suggestions. I actually put out a desperate plea to my friends for a video camcorder and I believe I'll be able to borrow a friend's sister's old school VHS camcorder!
Thanks again and I'll be sure to let you know if the AR works out. If you see a lesbian woman and a newlywed guy on Season 14, that's me and my friend!
Unsuccessful
yeah ur prob. best off
O_O u lost me lol
first off gl w/ Amazing Race n if they do select u, u must inform us :).
ummm yeah the actual tech prob.... u lost me but i do think it would be easiest just to hook it to ur tv and record it from the tv to the VCR.
before trying diff. ways than the tv to VCR just mess around with the diff. inputs if it at first doesn't work. if that's not even possible, as stated previously, i'm not the tech genius (google's my bff.)
EDIT: u posted a sec. before i did so u should just ignore all that then. woops :).
I lost you? I lost me!!
I lost you? I lost me!! haha
I feel like such a bozo with all of this. I used to consider myself very capable of handling things of this nature, but my aptitude has certainly abandoned me! Case in point: used to have my entire media center hooked up to my surround sound and after my ex g/f moved out, I haven't been able to figure out how to set it up again!
well....
I think camcorder --> VCR
I think camcorder --> VCR --> TV is definitely going to be the easiest way to accomplish this. As long as your TV & VCR have A/V input & output ports, and you tune to the right auxilary channel, you should be able to do this. Some VCRs have switches that you have to change to be able to view a video, and some (most) you just tune your TV to a designated auxilary channel, IE channel 3 or 4.
Good luck with the Amazing Race auditions.
