UK: Bar lesbians from IVF in absence of father figure
Reported in The Guardian today: "Lesbian couples should be blocked from having IVF treatment unless they agree that a father figure would be involved in the upbringing of their child, the Tories said yesterday." CONT... http://www.guardian.co.uk/science/2008/may/13/stemcells.medicalresearch And a retort, also in the Guardian, from our own Jane Czyzselska (editor of Diva magazine) http://commentisfree.guardian.co.uk/jane_czyzselska/2008/05/parenting_with_heart.html Some great and also annoying posts in The Guardian blogs...

Ugh Andrew Lansley is my MP
Great...
The conservatives are taking
Ungh
Wow, that's crazy.
WHAT!?
I had always thought the UK was more advance when it came to LGBT rights. This story is depressing
I HATE THE TORIES
it's easy to think that the UK is more advanced because for the past 10 years we've had a new labour government, and although they have thousands of flaws! they are more liberal than the tories, especially on the family values (as you yanks like to call it) side!
i mean they legalised civil partnerships, that's a great step, however the tories are regaining power in britain. and they are pretty much not pro-gay! although there are a couple of exceptions! also labour has been encouraging faith schools over it's decade in power, i have many things against faith schools but the main one is that they breed homophobia, i know i've experienced it first hand!
anyway if the tories get into power in the next election i imagine this is the kinda thing that we will be expecting from oh so liberal england *splutters*
Kids without dads
They seem to forget that lesbians aren't the only fatherless parents.
Are they going to start forcing, say, female widows to give their child up for adoption just because they no longer have a father?? Or forcing rape victims to have an abortion because they can't raise a child??
Come on.
Anybody's love, whether they're from 2 people from the same or from different sexes, or even from just one person is enough to raise a child.
omg that's genius
Conservatives
The way people are jumping the labour ship, the tories probably won't even need a co-alition to pump out some crazy legislation. I'm not Gordon Brown's biggest fan, but d thought of the last 10 yrs of progress being retracted is a pretty scary thought!
It definitely isnt a good sign that these suggestions are being played out in the media before they've even properly gained power. They are obviously feeling very confident of their position if they are doing so.
The tori 'all boys club' scares me.
Wooot!

Sucks to be Iain Duncan Smith. Consider him pwned.
thank goodness for that.
dunno if i or any friends ever will have kiddie winks, but at least we still have the option (for now).
this is why we MUST continue to campaign and have prides and be loud!!!
if the tories get back into power, goodness alone knows what idiotic measures they'll (try to) bring in on 'family value' type bills. or what they might try to take away. who knows which decade/universe some MPs are living in...
but we already have boris in london. crap!
I was at the protest outside
