Questions...

Not sure if this is in the right section but, I have questions for you ladies. Ok, I have to give a persuasive speech to my high school english class and I chose the topic GLBT Rights. Now, I obviously want my speech to be effective, and I dont want to poorly represent the community. So, what points/arguments/issues are important to you guys? Should I address any issues more in depth than others?

Heres what I plan on including as of now:

Backround of GLBT oppression, denouncing genetic defect and immorality (present in many other species) ideas

Bringing to light how large the community is, that GLBT people are not a remote part of society so denying such a large group of people equal rights is made even more egregious.

and then of course the legal issues marriage, adoption, equality in work-place. those are the biggies right?

Thanks for your help guys!

your questions

That's a good presentation you have going if you're going to discuss all of that. You could also include hate crimes and how psychologists are now saying being a homosexual isn't a degenerate condition. In the past it was ridiculous in some psychological fields and a chance that you were a gay man is if you had an affection towards cats...so...today homosexuality is not beneath heterosexuality. You can also talk about identity how everyone in the gay community has their own sense of how they present themselves or how some people prefer the term lesbian, dyke, gay. Its very multi layered. Those are just some ideas that aren't really very good but goodluck.

Thanks for the input! I didnt think about talking about the diversity within the community, thats probably something kids arent familiar with.

it might also help to talk

it might also help to talk through personal experience...tell them your story about being gay/coming out. that's a good way to break the ice, I think.
