What does your hair say about you? If anything...

Let me start with a little backstory so that you’ll have some idea of why I’m asking this question.

Along time ago (in a galaxy far away…), I used to have really long hair, but Iwas never the girly “flip your hair a lot” type. Then, a bad break-up causedme to go nuts and I cut my hair really short, it totally screamed gay (itfreaked my mom a little). Now, I alternate between long and somewhat short-hair,depending on the seasons really.

However,I’ve found that hair more than your personality/attitude attracts a certaintype of women (girly/not so girly, etc). I don’t know if people identify short-hairwith more a butch-type and long-hair w/femme (I’m using these terms loosely) or what, but my question(s) is this:

Do you judge a girl (femme/butch) based on her hair?

Do you care and why?

Hmmmm...tough

I have longish shortish hair...lol no...my hair is a little past my shoulders and my personality and looks alternate between girly and tomboy.

Nah, I don't judge girls

Nah, I don't judge girls based on their hair..

Or maybe I do..

I mean, if I see a girl with long hair or not long hair but cute short hair that looks very girly, I won't automatically think she's straight.. although, it might be true that if I see mullets or that haircut that seems to be everywhere when I go to a lesbian bar, I'll think that girl is gay. It may help me to identify lesbians lol but I don't judge :)

Absolutely

I absolutely judge based off of hair, but I definitely say that loosely because I dont meant that I only go for one or the other, I just automatically assume that one is MORE butch/fem than the other. Ive dated someone who was OVERLY fem with long hair and someone who was pretty butch (loosely, once again) and had very short hair. so i dont exactly have a preference, but that doesnt mean i dont judge!

I think there is more to

I think there is more to being classified as butch/femme than hair.  Of course probablity wise, I think there is a difference.  The way you style/care for your hair is more indicitive than just length, also some women just look really good with short hair.  So really lame example but when Jenny in the L word cut her hair, no one in the world would ever call her a butch.

Agreed

I completely agree with your example, and of course stuff like that DOES happen, but if we're using the words "butch" and "femme" anyway, we're obviously being pretty damn general to begin with haha so stereotypes are what we're going by in this thread, i assume.

hair length is the bane of my existence

thanks for starting this topic!

i won't say i don't judge a girl based on her hair length at all...because we all judge everyone to a certain extent based on their appearance. but i do NOT think hair length is the determining factor between femme and butch or girly/not-so-girly.

this is because :
1) i have really long hair, but definitely consider myself more on the butch/andro side of the spectrum. it bothers me to no end that people consider me to be anywhere near femme just because i have long hair. if i were to cut my hair short, i think people would see me for the gender expression that i really am, but i LIKE my long hair. i think it looks good, and if anything...its actually revealing of my butchness more than anything else. ...mostly because i think short hair takes more effort to keep it looking good. i don't put any effort into my hair. i wash it, i let it air dry, and there it is. i wear it up a lot, but not exclusively. i cut it maybe once a year, max. even if i was a guy, i think i'd want long hair.

2) i tend to date feminine women who have short hair. i think short hair can be incredibly feminine - even moreso than long hair.

i think the reason we find eachother is because we both have hair styles that are stereotypically opposite to what our gender expression would seem to be. that and its near impossible to find any lesbians with long hair anymore...sheesh!

other than these few exceptions, i have serious problems trying to attract the type of women i am looking for. and i truly believe my hair is to blame. the only times people have seen past my hair is when i'm wearing a full on suit, with my hair up. i don't think i should change my hair just to attract a certain type of woman. (and i feel that i exude enough butch/andro qualities to be attractive to girls looking for those qualities - except ones who are strictly turned OFF by long hair.) but at the same time, i don't really fault people who judge based on hair - you have to judge based on something. i just wish they would give me a chance and actually talk to me before they wrote me off...

it all brings up a good question though. since your appearance is one of the main things with which you have to define yourself, should you follow society's rules of stereotyping on order to give off the right image? i could entertain an argument in support of this. but you'd have to near force me to chop my hair off...

my hair screams alternative and apparently japanese

Yes, well I'm half Korean so i have that black hair but its highlighted blond and dark brownish red and has a shagggy trendy cut. But I havn't really noticed what kind of person my.. hair attracts.

I'm generally polite and nice in public and even though i'm pretty alternative I tend to attract generally nice slightly alternative people also. However, my hair screams Japanese apparently so when eating out or if I meet other Asisns for the first time, they think i'm Japanese right off the bat.

WHERE THE AFROS AT?!?!!!!

whOOoo!!!
:)
Anyway. I don't usually judge people based on the length of hair. But I understand why people do. Personally. I've got a pretty large afro. So I'm not sure where I would fit in the "Short-hair - more a butch-type vs long-hair femme" idea. I mean ... it's a 'fro. Tight and curly. When it's pressed (straightened) , it's below my shoulders. so for me the question doesn't really work out.

In general, I'm attracted to all kinds of women. It has nothing to do with what label they feel they can most identify with.

my hair says...

that i don't have time to comb it or really do a damn thing with it.

i do remember back in 9th or 10th grade, which wasn't all that long ago, when i cut my hair super duper short. i mean it was classicly "dyke" short. i don't really remember why i did it, but i do know that it looked good. it also screamed out loud...lesbian! and practicly everyone began saying that i was one. they were only half right. lol
