bored in iraq

hi everybody. so i just got done doing a 12 hour patrol and used my brand new internet connection to log in to afterellen! it only took me 20 minutes to remember my username and password. i've been in iraq for about 2 months now. it's kind of a short deployment, i get to come back home in november. the worst part about iraq is that i only got to watch about a third of the l word this season. anyway, it gets very boring over here when there's not anything going on, so please feel free to message me. i'm always up for making new friends, and this is the only place i talk to random strangers online...everyone is just so friendly! i'll leave you guys with a little note i posted on facebook the other day (an editor for the paper back home read it and i guess she wants to do some kind of long distance feature on me or something...i didn't think it was that interesting but whatever. it's entitled " A CAMEL SPIDER?!"

greetings from iraq! can i just start this off by saying that i've had a cold/sinus infection or whatever the fuck for 2 weeks now and it sucks. i'm on tylenol, sudafed and mucinex and i've gone through millions of cough drops and tissues. i think it's the dust (which they just discoverd has traces of e. coli!!!) my throat gets really sore so i have to pop in half a cough drop before i go to sleep. i bite it in half because they last for a long time and i'd hate to choke to death on a cough drop. what a way to die in iraq.
well, if you don't know, my biggest fears are dying in a plane crash, dying a fiery death, and spiders (particularly camel spiders while i'm over here.) several camel spiders have already been spotted, so an encounter with one is not unlikely for me. one of my friends over here shakes out his boots before he puts them on to make sure none have crawled into them while he wasn't wearing them. i don't do this, because i forget to. well, the other night, i hit the snooze button too many times and had to rush to get dressed. after brushing my hair and throwing my clothes on, i sat on my bed to put on my boots. i got one on no problem. i put on my right boot and stood up. ooooh my god. something was on my heel! i freaked the FUCK out. i just knew it was a damn camel spider. i pulled that boot off faster than what was previously humanly impossible. i shake out my boot, and nothing falls out. shit, i thought, it's stuck on my foot! so without caring that i was about to touch a camel spider, i brushed off the bottom of my foot. then, i realized that what was stuck to my sock was not a camel spider, in fact, it wasn't anything living at all. it was one of my half-bitten cough drops! it must have fallen out of my wall locker and into my boot when i went for my brush. i was relieved but felt really stupid at the same time, because i'm sure no one else has ever been so frightened by a cough drop. but from that moment on, i always shake out my boots before i put them on.

Oh God...

Just the thought of Camel Spiders makes me shudder. I completely freak out when I see the tiniest of spiders so I don't know what I'd do if I ever saw a Camel Spider.

I think anyone aware of Camel Spiders lurking around would have been pretty terrified to put their boot on and feel something on their heel - I know I would have. Still, you're probably right, no-one's probably ever been so frightened by a cough drop. xD

So your Scared of Spiders

I am currently here in this wonderful place of fun in the sun and dust.  My biggest issue this deployment so far are the flies and the dust.  I guess I don't have it that bad those two issue are not huge and  I would get a little freaked about spiders sneaking into my boots while I sleep.  So I wish you luck with the cold from hell and camel spiders.  May we both get out of this deployment sooner than later.

i knew better...

I couldn't resist. I had to google camel spiders. I knew I wouldn't like it, I couldn't close the window fast enough! I can't imagine the terror when you put on that boot. I guess that "itsy bitsy spider" rhyme isn't so cute anymore!

bleh

I hate spiders. I don't know what a camel spider is, but I do know I won't let myself google it.

So what military are you with? One that doesn't actually mind if you're not straight or one that is currently pretending not to mind because they need the troops?

they are very ugly, very

they are very ugly, very big, and very agressive. they actually aren't spiders, i guess, but they're related to them close enough for me. the US army has a "don't ask, don't tell" policy when it comes to gays and lesbians. you can tell most lesbians in the army from a mile away.  you can't tell with me, and my unit is pretty laid back about everything, anyway (one of my male sergeants and i even went to some gay bars together before we came here.) some units would kick you out for being gay, but my unit is in dire need of soldiers so even if they walked in on me, i'd still be stuck here!

WOw

I can only imagine how life in Iraq is!...I am a fan of camel spiders (weird I know) , but wow you did get freaked out, got to love the reactions to the human fear!!! LOL. Is funny, you are lucky it wasnt anyhting major.

Other than that! *salutes ma'am!* Is a pleasure to know that your deployment wasnt for too long!. And yeah, I would have to agree with the above comment...How did you get in the military?, I am just curious because "Homosexual conduct" is not allowed in there... I signed up for the marines and faked I was straight.(which in the end wasnt worth the lie because I couldnt continue the boot camp training because of a tragedy) .So, what did you do?...

lol, yeah that is pretty

lol, yeah that is pretty weird that you like spiders. as for how did i get in? well, it's a don't ask, don't tell policy. they don't ask me, i don't tell them.  with most females, you don't have to ask. i'd say at least 60% of the women in the army are gay. i'm pretty closeted in all aspects of my life, so it's not hard to fake it out here. i'm surrounded by men. when they check out a girl, and i "jokingly" join in, they don't seem to mind. they usually like it *rolls eyes*. but now that i'm getting older, i think i'm going to wild out when i get back.  i went to a gay bar for the first time right before i left and had the time of my life. got lots of kiss and drinks, my 2 favorite things.

"it means vagina wig."

Hey Brittany... I Can Relate Alittle...

I saw the thread, bored in Iraq... so I had to see whats up. I'm currently deployed too not as fortunate as you, fifteen long BORING months. Yay. I'd have too agree with it seems like about 60% of the females are gay... in my company there is like 14 females and 4 are gay, more have had bi encounters before. It's great. I'm on R&R right now and ALOT of people have asked me about the freakin camel spiders I haven't seen one but I'd probably have a heart attack and die (definitely a shitty reason to die in Iraq lol) But you've seen alot so that scares me... you're not in Baghdad by any chance? If so I need to start fearing for my life...haha

Have fun, don't let the boredom kill you.
