What were your favourite childhood toys?

Okay, so I recenty found a box filled with my old childhood toys, and I've realised, that even as a child, I was SUCH a dyke. The box was filled mostly with cars and k'nex construction kits, as well as a few Sindy dolls. I guess the Sindy dolls sont seem too dykey at first, untill I point out that it was Cycling Sindy, Zipwire Sindy, and she had her own van. Also, Paul, Sindy's man... currently has no head :|

Anyway, so I was wondering, what toys did everyone else play with as kids? Could this be another piece of evidence for the "born gay" school of thought? Let me know! :)

darn, that's a good question! I can only remember playing with Lego, and Lego isn't very gay, right?

Legos! :)

I lived and breathed legos when I was a kid. My li'l bros., too. The most fun was when we started modding. We were converting our space/town sets into Star Wars (before the official sets came), and I got super-pissed that there were no black lego people. I was like 12 and wanted to write an angry letter, ha. (Honestly, though, how hard is it to pour brown plastic into the machine that makes heads?Lots more lego racism where that came from, but I won't go there.) Anyway, instead I just got some brown modelling paint and made some myself. You can't have Star Wars without Lando! After that we would cut/melt/paint/glue any special pieces we wanted. (Lightsabers! :) We made lego kids (shorter than adults) to raise h*ll and had family and mischief and crash scenes posed all over the towns and space stations. And, aerial dogfights with X-wings/TIE's hung on fishing wire. God, those days were fun!

Otherwise, we made magazines and newspapers for our siblings-only club, built forts and spaceships to fight our club enemies, and played RPG's together. Mom and Grandma and Grandpa wouldn't buy the Super Nintendo for us (not even for Christmas!) so we got a newspaper route, and I drummed the boys out of bed at 4:30 every morning to make our Nintendo money. (Ha, they loved me for that!)

Out of all that tomboyishness, probably the biggest rainbow flag was how thoroughly engulfed by saving the princess I was in every RPG. I still wish there was a way to save Schala in Chrono Trigger. She was so heroic.

Hmmm

I can only remember playing with stuffed animals.  but I do remember this one toy that was a furry dog connected to a remote control leash.  I don't know if that says much.  Although ...  I have only had one Barbie doll in my life (around 5 yrs old) and I guess that ended when I decided to chew off her foot.  Oh well.

Childhood...

It is funny how looking back now everything is so clear...When I was a child I played with Lego's, GI Joes, and Hot Wheel Cars but I had two older brothers and no sisters so I really wasn't left with much in the girlie arena. I did have Barbie's and played house with friends but some how Barbie always hooked up with another Barbie and I always volunteered to be the dad of the house. Hmmm...Its a mystery why I grew up the way I did...

Dump Truck on Fire!

My big yellow metal tonka dump truck. Built a fire in the back of it and sent it down the steep road by my grandmother's house. Caught the ditch on fire! Good times, good times...

Truckers!

I'm also of the trucking clan. I had a big black A-team truck (black with the red 'go faster' stripe down the side) and also had the Murdoch figurine/doll.

I did have some girly dolls, but I cut all of their hair short. My favourite one was the one you could make wee. I always made it wee on my sisters bed. Tres fun!

hey i remember...

the A-team truck...me and my brother duct taped a naked barbie on the front/hood of it and kept crashing her/the truck off a ramp...now that i think back that was kinda violent but we both hated that barbie...and i miss my big wheel races...how i survived playing with my toys i'll never know...LOL...

Lego!!

Ah lego, I loved it so much. My friends and I used to create little towns and I would always be a boy in it. Played with Barbies and Cindy as well (also had the cycling one, she gave me hours of entertainment!). Oh and something called Sylvanian families. But lego was what I played with the most although my mam did get me pink lego and tried to make me all girlie but I was a tom-boy so it didnt work. Also used to play with my neighbours GI Joes and their toy guns

And Cycling Cindy was awesome, I remember thinking her bike was compleatly amazing.. because it worked like a real bike! I think I had a bit of a crush on cycling cindy looking back... :|

Ally_aka_Renee's picture

Yeah!!

Sylvanian families were fun! I had a little boat for them and all. Lol

Heck yeah Cycling cindy rocked! I still remember the day I got her, it was the day Argos opened over here! She was great. That was until she mysteriously disappeared...never knew what happened to my Cindy. My brother probably stole her and took her apart like he did with all my toys

Boys toys

Wow I played with mostly boys toys.  I had a doll (but then I remember cutting her hair off) and I had an Easy bake oven but I would try and cook odd things like tree sap.

My nephews always got the cool toys.  GI Joe and Castle Grey Skull.  I so wanted those things but my parents would never get them for me.  I was lucky to get dinky cars and lego which I loved.

I was fanatical about

I was fanatical about plastic cats. Like um, plastic lions and tigers you get from those animal packet things. I liked the Lion King and had Simba and Narla and Scar right next to my bed. Twas nice, they were all very shiny. I could move their legs and brush their lion hair.

But um yeah, I liked plastic lions.

MICRO MACHINES

I had hundreds of them! i also had super van city, the micro machines army base, and race tracks.  The funny thing is..i know nothing about cars now lol. but they were so much fun to play with back then. i never had any dolls, but i had sprites from rainbow brite and I had other stuffed animals like pound puppies.  but I really should have known I was gay when I traded my next door neighbor my sister's cabbage patch kid for her brother's he-man action figure.  lol

I LOVED Lego's, and i

I LOVED Lego's, and i primarily played "pretend" games other than that. I liked playing Oregon Trail with my sisters. I was always the trail guide though. I also had bike races with my imaginary friends (I lived 5 miles from the closest kids other than my 2 sisters). I would also take maple saplings and turn them into swords/hiking stick/whatever and go exploring at the creeks down from my house. That was my favorite thing to do. I'd also saw off broom handles to the length of a softball bat and throw up gravel and hit it with the broomstick. . .

uhmmmm yeah. . .

and my brother in law calls me "the little brother he never had"

All the boys' toys

I would only ever play with 'boys'' toys; footballs, tool sets, skateboards, guitars, cap guns and cars. Girls' toys seemed so boring and pointless!

I would actually feel embarrassed if anyone bought me a doll or anything that was pink. It kinda made me feel stupid. Luckily my mum never once made an issue out of it and let me play with whatever made me happy.

Proper tomboy!

Still am.

Gay all the way

I was pretty much a boy as a kid.

Played soccer & basketball with my neighbours (all boys, there weren't any girls my age around) and I always preferred more boyish toys like cars (I'm remembering a Micro-Machine tool box that opened to become an entire city filled with little car toys...), construction set pieces of all kinds, playmobil pirate ship and the like. I even had a couple of G.I. Joes, He-Man figures... I just had a flash of a plastic tool set I used to play hours with. All types of electronic gadgets were like honey to a bee. Loads of comics, puzzles, guns not so much but still.

Although I had a little wooden kitchen set I absolutely adored. It even had a funtioning tap. It was the coolest thing ever! But, other than that, nothing girlish. I hated (really hated) girly dolls. Stuffed animals were OK, though. That's kind of unisexual, I guess.

I was such a dyke. I've always though my predilection for contruction sets were an engineering thing, but... Well, I was really queer, what can I say.

Actually, I've always taken that whole tomboy childhood thing as proof that homosexuals are born, not made. I know I was. I've always been gay, I've always known at some level.

I eventually grew out of the tomboy phase (not that there's anything wrong with that, that's just not me anymore), but the queerness is for life. Thank goodness :)

Legos - The best toy ever made IMO.  I still have a few sets.

Remote control cars

Battery operated robots

Swords/Guns

Cooking utensils toys (not very dykeish I know)...strange because I don't even cook now

legos were by far my

legos were by far my favorite

whenever i'd go over my friends house, i'd always leave her with her bedazzler to go play with her little brother and his hot wheels...

i had barbies, but they always seem to get it on with each other, and i was the first person i knew to get rid of them

i also had one of those kiddie cars that i could drive myself.. and i'm pretty sure it was a motorcycle (but a tricycle in disguise), but my mother seems to think it was a jeep.. either way.. i loved it. :)

annnd i was obsessed with the teenage mutant ninja turtles

...wow... haha

Everything

I would pretty much play with anything! From dolls to Hotwheels cars. I loved building tracks and seeing the cars jump off them at high speeds. Hehehe Oh and LEGOS own, man! I loved building the most elaborate cars and buildings. But my favorite was probably Barbie. I had a ton of them. I remember I got Baywatch Barbie because I had a crush on basically all the girls from the show and when I lost it, I made my mom take me to like 4 different stores to find a new one. I never really wanted Ken dolls and if I got them I'd try to dress them up in Barbie's clothes because I thought it was be funny :/ I loved when I got a new outfit for my Barbie though many of them spent their lives without any clothes at all. Hmm...Oh and I loved baby dolls! I would carry them around delicately like they were my children and get really upset when some boy took it and mistreated it. I'd yell at him to give it back! Fun times.

Oh! And stuffed animals! I had a Dakin fat cat that I had a wedding for with my best friend's identical fat cat. Of course I had to be the boy cat, cuz she always got what she wanted and of course I let her. It's alright though, I still have him and he's still my favorite toy from my childhood. In fact here I am now, away at college, in my own apartment and he's sitting on my pillow looking at me with his one eye, the other my dog chewed off last Christmas.

cowgirlumhum's picture

i was born dyke

The first toy we have physical evidence of me having was a nerf basketball and a baby sized basketball goal. I then got a PlaySkool TM toolbox complete with a plastic hardhat, hammer, sander, level, block of wood, 3 nails, 3 screws and a screw driver. I LOVED that. I took it everywhere, even church.

As I got a little older I got Lego's and Lincoln Logs too. I also played with penny's (the coin) and marbles a lot. I had a plastic kitchen set that I loved... even then I mostly used the microwave lol.

I had one special doll that I always thought was made specifically for me (it was a plush doll... not prefab but an AMAZING handmade doll that resembled a Cabbage Patch doll) anyway, it is a readheaded boy with the letters "Jr." stitched on the front of his overalls, so I called him Junior. Junior was with me a lot. When I learned in my Child Psycology class that kids usually have one doll that they use to help them figure out themselves I wondered if that was an indicator between my friends who had Barbies and grew up straight.

I thought I was in the army......

My favourite game to play when a was young was 'Army', with my 2 brothers and a few other kids from my area (all boys). We had everything, the army clothes, walkie talkies, pretend hand grenades and plastic AK47 rifles. Even managed to pursuade my mum to buy us camoflage paint for our faces in the local army surplus store..... she thought we were crazy, but went along with it anyway.

Also loved action man, scalextric and he-man figurines. I cried when my uncle bought me a 'wedding dress barbie' for xmas one year, cos I wanted the action man he had bought my brother.

The thing is, I now am actually femme, you would never tell I am gay just by looking at me, but on the inside I guess I'm just a big dyke lol!

Toy Story

I had a buzz lightyear toy and it was the best! When my brother bought his boys the new buzz lightyear action figure (a few months ago?) I was so disappointed, lol. It was like a cheap knock off of the original toy. I know, the toy wasn't for me! But still, I was disappointed!

Another one was a beanie pup that my sister bought for me when she went on vacation one time. I use to dress it up, put it to sleep and when my mom bought me kids dishware I use to let my beanie pup eat food with it. Then one winter we (my beanie pup and I) were building a snowfort. I got cold and went outside and found out I lost her! I searched and searched but she was gone.

Those toys were so good.

Nerf Guns, I loved them! Had my own collection. Nerf guns, dart guns, any type of toy gun I had. I only had as many as 6 darts in one gun. Wish I had the bigger clips. I also had an obession with water guns. Again I wish I had the bigger tank or refill tanks to carry.

I also I had a bag of cars. My parents may still have them somewhere now that I think about it. :)

Oh, I had a plastic baseball set. I used to pretend I was on the losing team so I had to hit a homerun out of my yard to win. I loved it.

Though not toys in the strictest sense of the word, I grew up on a farm with many animals and they provided ample entertainment. Of the non-living variety I would probably say my blocks or my American Girl doll, Felicity.

I have a long list!

Legos, pogo stick, toy guns, waterguns, skates, Lite Brite, action figures, hotwheels, sports equipments, scissors, glue, video games, Gameboy, light sabers, walkie talkies, kites, plastic racetrack sets, etc. I had an easy-bake oven thingy that never worked -_- Hated barbies and cut off all their hair and ripped their heads off. My mom knew not to buy them, but my other relatives didn't know. The only doll I've ever loved (and still have and still sleep with) is Lamb Chop! :P
