San Francisco June 2008 tips?

Ahoy fellow travelers,

I’m going to be in town for about 2 weeks but mostly by myself.

I’ve read some previous posts and they look pretty good, but I really would like some recommendations about what to do on my own.  What parks are best to check out?  What areas to avoid?  I’ll be in town for Pride weekend too, but I know it’s quite boy-oriented, so what are the good spots for the women?  Please reply to this post or pm me, thanks!

V. Cool/ Other Sister scene location help!

Awesome! Do you have friends in San Fran?
I've been gearing up by watching some films that take place in San Francisco (i.e. Flower drum song (I want to check out the former Forbidden City site), The Other sister, and many more, Vertigo is next on my list) Anyways so I don't know if this one scene was filmed in San Francisco, but if someone could tell me if they recognize the location that would be awesome!

I just found out the location

So a friend of my cousin just told me that the picture is from the Palace of fine arts, but apparently it's under construction? This location also showed up in the movie Vertigo.

Where are the SF afterellen users? Tips please!

sf

i'm new to the bay area myself, and i find the scene kinda dry, or maybe i just dont know where to go. theres this website that posts some stuff but the events but sometimes the events are kinda not true, so i might call ahead! : www.dykealicious.com sf is definitely more for gay guys from what i've seen, and maybe more "settled down" lesbians. even san diego had more going on! yes, tips would be appreciated for me too! haha..

as for places in general:

the japanese tea garden in golden gate park is cool

if you like japanese food and stuff, check out japan center(mall) on geary and fillmore

for hippy/angsty style shopping, haight and ashbury is a fun place, almost overwhelming!

and lots of wineries at napa, 2 hrs away

the tenderloin is a sketchier neighborhood i would try to avoid walking at night.

hope this helps!

Thank you space. I was thinking of checking out the Japanese Tea Garden.

San Francisco

Don't worry about PRIDE. They have a thing called "Dyke March" every year that starts at Dolores Park, so you won't be dealing with the dudes all weekend.

All of my friends frequent "The Lex" which is a lesbian bar, but there are also other lesbian parties. Cockblock. And...wait, there's another one...why can't I think of it? Hmm...whatever, I'll be there. Just hang out with me.

Uhm...

*lol* Spill Jill, you're suggesting I go to a place you can't remember the name of to hang out with you?

SF Pride

I live about an hour south of San Francisco, but I've been to the Pride events for the last couple of years. There are definitely some girl events to check out. The Dyke March that starts in Dolores park is a good one. You should also check out Cream and Mango which are the popular girl parties. You can also go to the SF Pride website for more information. Have fun!

A few SF tips :)

I lived in SF for 4 years but recently moved to LA a year ago so hopefully I can help you out :)

SF is predominantly a boys' town but there are tons tons TONS of ladies in the city during Pride. You don't really need to plan out your weekend because Castro is basically one massive party. They shut down the streets so people drink and dance all over the place.

If you want to go to a club, all the clubs are literally right next to each other. The main place that I always enjoyed was The Cafe. I believe it's on Market (not quite sure) but it's smack in the middle of Castro. If you can't find it, ask people there. Practically every gay person in SF has gone at least once. It's co-ed so yes, there will be boys. Music is mainly pop and hip-hop.

Another place is the Lexington Club, the only lesbian bar in SF. It's not in Castro so take a cab there. Note: it is a bar so the place is rather small... upside, you'll be bumping and grinding into a lot of ladies ;) Last time I was there, music was ehh. Lotsa of trance, nothing I could really dance to.

I always check out girlports.com for lesbian clubs/restaurants in different cities so take a look at that too.

As for parks, there's Golden Gate park. It covers half of the city so it's not hard to find. On Sundays, they shut down the park to cars so a lot of people jog, bike, bbq, etc. at the park. They also have bisons there o.0

As for areas to avoid, the Tenderloin is kinda sketchy so best avoid that. As for general tips, use the public transportation system (MUNI). Do not event attempt to drive/park there. In the years I lived there, I paid $4000 in parking tickets. If you're going to be there for a few weeks (or even a weekend), buy a temp MUNI pass. You can use it on any bus, trolley, train, whatever and it'll be cheaper than buying a pass every time you board.

Hope that helps. Let me know if you have any other questions :)

The Cafe

I went to SF on vacation not so long ago and they had a girls night at the Cafe and it was a lot of fun.

I can't remember the day of the week though.

The only thing I hated about going out in SF was that no matter where I went the bathroom lines were always ridiculously long.

The Cafe bathroom

Probably the only downside to all girl events!! The Cafe is the worst for waiting.
