Bi-sexuality in Buffy Season 8Like many of you out there, I am a crazy fan of Joss Whedon's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. My love for Willow and Tara was one of the first indicators that I was a lesbian. Naturally I was thrilled to see Buffy being resurrected as a comic book with Buffy Season 8. Despite her chemistry with Faith in season 3, I always thought Buffy was pretty straight. Which is why I was shocked to open my new copy of “Buffy” (issue #12 scripted by Drew Goddard) and find Buffy in bed with a wildly attractive Asian woman named Satsu. Buffy has only ever had relationships with men before, and earlier issues indicated that there may still be some unresolved feelings for Angel and Spike. I sure don’t know where this is going, but I am eagerly awaiting the next issue.
Any thoughts? Is the world ready for bi-sexual Buffy? I know I am. Submitted by Anonymous on March 5, 2008 - 3:48pm. |

I Have to get that Issue
What?!
Buffy and Satsu are in bed together!? Why must the comic store be SO FAR AWAY!!! I cannot wait to get this issue.
Spoily Spoilers
Don't go crazy, Buffy's night with Satsu was a one-time thing only. I thought it was made clear in the story... For a "fling", I thought it was very well done, and also hilarious.
Joss explains all in the NY Times (requires registration)
Too Bad...

Someone mentions Joss "not being eager to kill another lesbian" but if this is just a fling for buffy but for satsu it is love... where could this head.
I wish I could get into a buffy comic.
A Girlfriend for Willow
Way down the line I think Willow and Satsu will pair up. I think Joss didn't want another lesbian character to come off as a character that was solely created to be Willow's girlfriend.
I think Satsu will get over Buffy and develop as a character in her own right in the process. And then bring Willow and Satsu together in gradual organic way.
I never liked Willow/Kennedy because Kennedy came off as a character created just to be Willow's love interest so she could move on after Tara. The whole thing felt forced and unnatural story-wise. I didn't feel like I ever got to know Kennedy. And I definately didn't get to know her enough to want her to hook up with Willow. Kennedy started hitting on Willow the moment she met her...there was no lead up.
Satsu's unrequited love for Buffy will cause people to root for her...to want her to hook up with someone who can love her. And that'll be Willow. But of course after Willow gets over Satsu sleeping with her best friend...and how come Buffy never wanted to sleep with her...even if she wasn't attracted to Buffy and didn't want to sleep with her anyway...the point is Buffy slept with a woman and didn't even consider Willow all those years. LOL This is all speculation of course.
I have read both issue 12
It is what it is
One night. One experience. And that's okay.
“We’re not going to make her gay, nor are we going to take the next 50 issues explaining that she’s not. She’s young and experimenting, and did I mention open-minded?”
She's straight, and she slept with a woman but he's not going to be defensive about it an spend 50 issues explaining that she's straight. And yes, that is refreshing. If you're going to quote something, quote it.

For me..
Well, I'm definitely in the minority here but I've always been a Buffy/Willow shipper of sorts. I've always thought there couldn't be a more perfect choice for the gorgeous, strong, tough-as-steel yet kind slayer than the beautiful, intelligent and shy red-head. I've yet to begin my foray into the comic series but this is certainly an interesting development. Just like the rest of you ladies here, I'm excited about it too! But..
*Sigh* the irony of it all.. *Sigh Again*
I'm a weirdo, but.. I was a Faith/Willow shipper
Man, I can't wait to get my hand on some season 8 comics. I've been rewatching the series and remembering how much I effing loved Willow and even more, I forget how effing deep the Willow/Buffy friendship was even from the earliest days. Even despite her having this deep bond with Xander from childhood -- Willow and Buffy just loved each other. Willow... sigh... the only reason to watch Buffy. Even if she had never turned out to be a lesbian.
I mean, I don't really care about Buffy sleeping with a girl... I mean I do and I don't. What was funny is that the lines were so SMG's Buffy I could grin at them. I could tottally see Buffy doing that/saying that and it not being a bit out of character that it was so. I would love to see what happens when/if Willow finds out though. What will it all mean to their friendship? Will she resent Buffy for what Buffy currently thinks is purely a one-night stand/experimentation or will she respect her open mind? Like a few, I would also like to see Faith weigh in on this. Because, well, if anyone was sending flexible sexuality vibes from day one it was Faith. She seemed to be quite into Buffy - even when she hated her, hell she was once IN Buffy litterally if not sexually. Maybe that's why Joss didn't go there. There was nothing obviously gay about Willow before Tara and Buffy was the straightest of this straight girls up to this Season 8 comic. No one would be surprised to know Faith was bi. But with the things that Buffy's seen/done/experienced I don't find it surprising she fell into bed with this woman. I also am not surprised she would avoid hooking up with any of the girls she's cared about for years (Willow or Faith). I don't know where Buff's love life stands in season 8, but this is way better than her affair with her near rapist Spike. I always found that relationship way too sick based solely on that near rape scene. I never quite forgave that of him. I know he's a demon and all - that he should be respected for all the good he did do without having a soul forced into him, but still the personal violation of it was unnerving for me.
Oddly enough I really didn't care to much for the Faith/Buffy thing or the Willow/Buffy thing as romantic hook-ups, I was a Faith/Willow shipper from early season 3. The thing is I never "got" Willow and Kennedy either. It just never worked for me. Willow and Oz... tottally made sense. Willow and Tara... tottally made sense. Willow and Xander kinda made sense. But Kennedy seemed like a nice kid she should have patted on her head and sent on her way. Not only that, she seemed like a pale immitation of Faith anyway. But I got her being "rebound girl", I just didn't see deep future love there. I may be the weirdo here, but I was praying for a Willow/Faith hook up from the day Faith left Angel and showed up back in Sunnydale. Willow always seemed to be the one highly attunded to Faith's... well... sexualness. Not only that, Faith-in-Buffy called the whole Willow/Tara thing without needing it spelled out for her. I was disappointed Faith wasn't the slayer Willow finally hooked up with when she returned for the final season of the series (on TV). I soooooooooo wanted them to hook up and instead she ends up in bed with the stupid principal guy. Ugh!
Im A Fuffy Shipper
Can we Make Josh and Honorary Lesbian?
Josh has said that it was important for Buffy's character arch, I'm not sure what that means but is should be fun! Faith and Giles seem to be building there own Black Ops team, wouldn't it be interesting if this sets up more Faith/Buffy sexual tension?
I love how Sarah(Buffy) asked if it was Willow right of the top of her head :).

Josh puts in tons of lesbian characters in his stories, usually really tender stuff. I would love to see more Willow relationship stuff! Thank you Josh!
